choosing notes

Is there any way to insert "choosing notes" into the staff?  These are the notes used to indicate variants; two notes are entered over a single syllable, or sometimes if the variant is rhythmic a single note head has two stems.  Usually the stems go in one direction for the normative reading, and in the other for the variant; the note heads are almost aligned with one another vertically, but are displaced enough so that they and the stems do not occupy the same space.

The easiest way to do that is to place the normative note in the usual fashion, and place the alternative as a text item. Text can be anything for which you have a font - including musical notation, except that the program does not care whether it is alphanumerical or musical.

The NWCV15 font can be specified as a user font, and placed as text. But you may find that it doesn't offer you the choice of notes that you need, instead it offers component parts of notes. There are some fonts that have pre-formed notes that you can use. Check the NWC Scriptorium (from the main NWC web page, go to user links).

You can also use a layered staff, and use the "extra note spacing" in the Note Properties.
Another way is (with an layered staff too) to choose a different color for the notes you want.
Try a light color in order to have them in light grey when printed in B/W.
