Quick explanation: It is the digitized representation of one or more musical instruments. Here, "musical instrument" can also include things such as dog barks, helicopers, etc. Some sound cards, and some software, use sound fonts to construct audio (WAV) from non-audio (MIDI). Not every sound card or software program uses sound font technology. Those that do use the technology will often allow change of sound fonts.

As a general rule, for a single instrument the larger the sound font, the more information it holds about the nuances of that instrument, and the more "realistic" it will sound. But the burden on computer respurces needed to process the information will also be greater.

Long explanation: I'm the wrong guy to explain it (I'm sure someone else will jump in). But a sound font is a technical thingie, not just the audio recording of an instrument.
