electronic delivery

NWC is a fine product.  Too bad it is licensed in such a backwards manner.  Seriously, can anybody explain to me why they _insist_ that a hardcopy version is shipped, which to most people doesn't really provide any extra value?!

I understand that some people prefer having a CD, but most people are happy to just download everything.

I think that at least the option of electronic-only delivery should be added.  In fact, I won't buy until this option is available, folks.  This is the Internet age, and every other shareware publisher in the universe offers this.  Why not NoteWorthy?  Beats me.

It's a way to reduce copyright violations - too many people like to share the program and their licence registration with friends.

If you can't wait a couple of days to receive your disk, well, you're depriving yourself of the opportunity to use this fine, inexpensive, easy to learn program.

It's my understanding that the above reply is exactly the way it is.

At least once in the past, NWC has had to change something about the way the program was downloaded, so that pirated copies at least didn't get updates. I know of another program that is doing something similar, except that from time to time the re-issue license codes.

Hey, I registered way back when you got a floppy instead of a CD, and then I downloaded the updates each time without ever getting a CD.  And my registration worked fine.
Did I do something wrong?!??!?!?!

Well,  I did the trial download at first, and liked it so i ordered.  Now as I use it i'm finding that my current musical setup\midi controllers is beginning to exceed my computer system. At least with the cd i can transfer the resitered program when i finnally purchase a newer computer.

Gus, that's what I did.  I've been able to transfer to new computers twice now when I've upgraded.

But to evaluate NWC 2 alpha, I had to fork out money to buy the CD, even though I was already licenced for the NWC 1 software on it.

When they finally do release NWC 2, I'm hoping there is some consideration made for this extra cost!  If I have to pay full price, I'm just as likely to go for one of the very expensive programs that has all the things we've been asking for for a long time!

I recently found out that I'm in the same boat. There must be a reasonably sized number of registered users who received their programs on floppys who are going to have to buy the program twice (ouch!). I recently sent an email to NWC asking about this and was only re-directed to the web site where the point was made that ONLY users with the CD would be able to d/l Version 2 beta. Maybe they feel it's a way of getting us "oldies" to pay for some of the development that's been going on while we've been merrily using the program in its various versions.

As far as I know, no one is being asked to buy the program twice.  It has been stated that the upgrade to NWC2 will be at no charge to persons who have bought the CD.  Thus, the only ones who would be, in any sense, paying twice are those who decided not to upgrade and to stick to NWC1.  There had never been any suggestion that the move from version 1 to version 2 would be without cost to the users.

(Think Windows 98 to Windows XP.  I don't think anyone ever expected that to be free.  Of course, we seem to hold NoteWorthySoftware in higher regard than Microlimp, but they AREN'T a charity.)

So, the correct view, in my opinion, is to think of the $15 (US) for the CD as a highly discounted advance payment for version 2.

Try it, you'll like it.

Yes, Cyril, you're completely correct.  There is no requirement to pay for two licenses for NWC1.  And I'm sure everyone agrees that moving to version 2 was always going to involve cost.

I'm just hoping that Noteworthy agrees with you and considers that people who paid for an extra CD license (merely to evaluate - as there was no operational need) will be given a discount when upgrading to version 2.  I know there are records, including dates, so identifying the relevant people shouldn't be too difficult to identify.

I suppose I just could have waited for the first full version of NWC2 to be released, and not paid for a version 1 CD, but since NWC has always been so good, who could wait?

If there is no discount, I guess I will just have to consider that I've had the benefit of version 2 early, and the dollars have been well spent on what must be one of the best value for money programs ever.

Cheers,
Ewan

P.S.  Apologies to British-based English speakers for my use of "license" as a noun.  I've had to type the American version so often (for computer maintenance) that it now feels natural falling from my fingers.  For this word, I've just given up!  Same for programs/programmes.
