Staff layering

Sorry for any non-musical terminology, I'm just trying to help out my son with a homework assignment here... He wrote something that has 3 staffs, but his teacher has asked him to combine the first two onto one staff. I figured out how to do the staff layering, but it mushes the rest from the second staff with the note on the first, which makes it hard to read. But if he removes the rest from the second staff, it shifts everything over so his measures aren't in sync. Is there any way to maintain the alignment but "hide" the staff 2 rests when they are layered?

Normally, you would simply move the rest up or down to avoid the collision. If you select the rest, you can move it using Ctrl+E to edit its properties.

Thanks for the Ctrl+E tip. I also did a little more reading in the forum and discovered the cool new "hide" ability in version 1.7 (ALT+ENTER) so that also gives him what he wants.
