Title: How do I .....?
Post by: boblalux on 2014-03-18 09:30 pm
With Noteworthy, there is no problem in writing/making a triplet.  But how can I make 4 semi-quavers to 1.5 crotchets (see attached Note-1.jpg)?
Likewise in attachment Note_2.jpg (the 4 quavers inquestion must be equivalent to 3 crotchets).

Two "quick and dirty's":
1) It doesn't look as elegant, but just dot 'em.  Makes the time come out right.

2) Alternatively, insert hidden rests that are half the value of the notes in question and an appropriate text entry...  Would look fine but the sound would be a little staccato.

Another alternative to Lawrie's : (also quick and dirty)

Use tied notes with the leading notes set as invisible. This prints out OK and doesn't sound staccato.

First measure needs 4 eighths in the space of 3 eighths. Beam is mandatory. Bracket is optional.

Second measure needs 4 quarters to be played in the space of 3 quarters. Bracket is mandatory. Digital whiteout would seem to be needed. I am working on a stable text alignment.

IMO, NWC would be improved if it allowed RestChords to be beamed.
IMO, NWC would be improved if it had text placement options of 'On Next Beam' and 'On Next Bracket'.
IMO, NWC would be improved if it had formal support for whiteout.

how can I make 4 semi-quavers [4 sixteenths] to 1.5 crotchets [1.5 quarters, or 6 sixteenths]?
Likewise in attachment Note_2.jpg (the 4 quavers [4 eighths] in question must be equivalent to 3 crotchets [3 quarters or 6 eighths]).
I quoted the OP's request, and added American names for the British challenged (like myself) I hope I got it right. If I did, his intent is to extend the length of the notes, not reduce them. In my quick research it appears that a bracketed 4 should, indeed, reduce the note length. But I believe in compound triplet time, it can be used to lengthen a note. I know that a bracketed 2 does increase note length by 1.5. So I think Richard's solution is correct for what the poster wanted, even if the "4" is confusing. It looks like the preferred notation would be 4:3.

If I undertand what boblalux is trying to do, this seems to be the clearest way to indicate it. Centering text in a bracket is tricky, but this method survives changes to page layout.
Edit: Attachments replaced. There were a couple wrong pitches in the original attachments. I also made a beaming change.

Thanks all of you.  I decided on the second "quick and dirty" of Lawrie. It may look quick and dirty, but in my case it is only the sound that counts, and not the score.  I am writing up the full score oof The Armed Man of Karl Jenkins, which our choir will be singing later this year, and the CD will be for home practice.

With "quick and dirties", I am always worried about unwanted syncopation due to unequal 'counts' between the staffs, but this is not the case when dotting as above.

In the first part of The Armed Man, the bass must be heard as, to quote Jenkins, 'Tap wood of piano to simulate drum rythm.'  Any ideas?

   Hi, Bobalux.

I've done a full Vocal Score for The Armed Man (see also my website www-dot-learnchoralmusic-dot-co-dot-uk).  If you want it, it's yours.

Thanks, MusicJohn,  Wonderful site, just what the doctor ordered!  Wish I had Googled it before;  I can now dump all my previous labours.

Final question MusicJohn:
Your files are in Midi format - it's quite possible that our choir master (mistress in fact) may make changes to the score, tempi etc etc;  did you by any chance  write the The Armed Man files in .nwc format (Noteworthy)?  If so, then I could edit any small changes necessary. Don't know how to do this in Midi format.

Indeed I did, Boblalux, and as I said you are welcome to them, and to make any changes your Choirmistress requires.

I will shortly E-mail them to you.
