There is a way to make this one:
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Note|Dur:8th,Grace|Pos:2|Opts:Muted
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Down,Muted
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
looking as is, but sounding as
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Note|Dur:8th|Pos:2|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:8th|Pos:1|Visibility:Never
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
Without using layering, I mean... (Too easy otherwise ;-)
Bit of a cheat - but that's what you were expecting wasn't it?
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|TimeSig|Signature:4/4
|Note|Dur:8th,Grace|Pos:3|Opts:Stem=Up,Muted

|RestChord|Dur:8th|Opts:Stem=Down,StemLength=1,XNoteSpace=1,ArticulationsOnStem,VertOffset=-2000|Dur2:4th|Pos2:1z|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:2|Opts:Stem=Down
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Up
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:2|Opts:Stem=Up
|Bar
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
!NoteWorthyComposer(2.5)
|AddStaff|Name:"Staff"
|StaffProperties|EndingBar:Open (hidden)
|Note|Dur:4th,Grace|Pos:2^|Opts:Stem=Down|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:4th,Grace|Pos:2^|Opts:Stem=Down|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:4th,Grace|Pos:2^|Opts:Stem=Down|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:8th,Grace|Pos:2
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Down
|Note|Dur:8th|Pos:2|Opts:Stem=Down,Beam=First
|Note|Dur:8th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Down,Beam=End
|Bar|Style:LocalRepeatClose|Repeat:4
!NoteWorthyComposer-End
?? there hasn't been a need to use VertOffset=-2000 for a year or so.
I know, but I prefer it. I like it to look clean in the editor as well as in viewer mode. I'm not very keen on rest chords where the rest is a shady invisible.
Of course! :-)
Rich, your trick makes the first note sounding for too long and clashing with the following one.
Rick trick is perfect.
Thank you both.
N.B. Like Rick, I was surprised to see VertOffset=-2000 again.
Just in case someone needs it: I remembered that figure is called "appoggiatura".
I recently had 16
th triplets with the violin rolling on three strings. When one of these sets included a fingered A on the D string as well as an open A string, I layered the 2
nd note with a stem in the other direction. Not wanting to show the
3 more than once, I had to send one of the hidden rests to the boondocks.
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:-5|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=First
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam

|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:4|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Pos:-5|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=End
|Text|Text:"4"|Font:PageText|Pos:-8|Placement:AtNextNote
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:-5|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=First

|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Pos:0|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:0|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Pos:-3|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam

|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:-6|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=First
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Pos:-4|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam

|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:0|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Pos:-4|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Pos:-6|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=End
|Text|Text:"3"|Font:PageText|Pos:13|Placement:AtNextNote
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:-6|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=First

|Text|Text:"O"|Font:PageText|Pos:13|Placement:AtNextNote
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End,Staccato|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam

|Rest|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Opts:VertOffset=-1|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Pos:-6|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=End
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
And on the layered staff:
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Rest|Dur:Half,Dotted|Visibility:Never
|Rest|Dur:16th,Triplet=First|Opts:Stem=Down,VertOffset=-180|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Down
|Rest|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Opts:Stem=Down|Visibility:Never
|Rest|Dur:16th,Triplet=First|Opts:Stem=Down,VertOffset=-180|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Down
|Rest|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Opts:Stem=Down|Visibility:Never
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
Not much of a trick. Grace notes steal a 32
nd, so if you want to steal an 8
th, you need 4 of them.
A bit off-topic. I'd just do this:
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Slur|Pos:-6|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=First
|RestChord|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Opts:Stem=Up,ArticulationsOnStem,HideRest|Dur2:16th,Slur|Pos2:-1
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End,Staccato|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=First,Staccato,Slur|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam
|RestChord|Dur:16th,Triplet,Slur|Opts:Stem=Up,ArticulationsOnStem,HideRest|Dur2:16th,Slur|Pos2:-1
|Note|Dur:16th,Triplet=End|Pos:-6|Opts:Stem=Up,Beam=End
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
Yes, I figured it out and, being lazy, I'm writing a user tool to do the job for me... ;-)
Very nice alternative solution to Warren's problem, too.
Many thanks, I was making a mountain out of a molehill--don't need the extra staff anymore.
This topic really deals with simulating long appoggiatura, so I have retitled it accordingly.

Oh, no!
Rick, only now I fully realized what you wrote!
It means that this trick doesn't work anymore:

Glad there is a workaround.
I'm still wondering why now the grace rest... don't rest.
And I'm thinking about the legacy, i.e. my old scores, in special mode the ones for harp...
Thank you, Rich.
I like this:
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.51,Single)
|Note|Dur:Whole,Grace|Pos:-5x^|Opts:Muted|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:Whole,Grace|Pos:-5y^|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:Whole,Grace|Pos:-5y|Visibility:Never
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
It is a drop-in for 2 grace rests from the older versions.
For 1 grace rest, delete the center item. For more grace rest equivalents, dup the center item as many times as needed.
The X head implies (to me) that it is muted. The non-pitched heads have less visual impact in the editor.
Attached is the penultimate measure from Scriabin's Opus 69, No. 1
In the first instance I get the visuals right. In the second, I drop in the delays to fix playback. The lower staff is red so I can see what each staff is contributing to the crossbeam.
Not my idea. I advised against it:
Rick, I envy your memory... :-)
You shouldn't. All I remembered was to search for "muted" and check
Options: 'Search in topic subjects only'. It is a short list.
The change only affects Rest Grace items with Visibility set to 'Never'.
You can change Visibility to 'Single Staff Prints' or 'Multi Staff Prints'. One of these will cause the items to be hidden.
Or you can forswear Rest Grace items with Visibility set to 'Never' until this useless (but arguably consistent) behavior is changed.
I plan to replace hidden grace
rests with hidden grace
notes (per my earlier reply) in my work going forward and as needed in existing work.
