Title: Dotted Note Discrepancies
Post by: debaumann on 2010-04-04 03:11 pm
Blessed Easter, everyone!

I've been plagued with dissimilarities in the appearance of dotted notes between layered and non-layered staves.

Example 1: "Without Layering" - notes entered twice at each position per staff.
Example 2: "With Layering" - notes entered once at each position per staff, staves layered.

Why two dots on the "lined" notes in Example 1??

Shouldn't each example look like Example 2?

Thanks,
D E Baumann

There is considerable discussion in this thread on augmentation dots.

Example 1 is correct. If you examine four-part vocal settings in, say, a hymn book you'll find that's the way it should be done.

With layering, you can set the tie direction downward to get the same visual result, as shown in the attached.

Thank you all for your comments.  (But it still looks funny with two dots sometimes and one dot at others!)
