i am using a sample file and don't hear a thing.

The error message means that the selected synth device cannot be used in NWC. Make sure that you are using only one device for play back in Tools, Options, Midi.

Above and below the topic you are reading there should be a streamer which includes REPLY/NOTIFY ME/MARK UNREAD/PRINT
