Title: It's 2021 and NWC still lacks one obvious feature?
Post by: PatrickLockwood on 2021-04-28 08:32 pm
Hi all.

I don't know if anyone remembers me,  but I was on this forum when it was on Usenet,  back around the years 2000 - 2001 -ish, maybe later, I forget.

Now then,  I just purchased the latest version, 2.75a.2  and a problem I had back then seems to stlll exist.  I'm only interested in doing lead sheets, mostly,  sometimes piano/vocal scores, but that's about it.  Now then, I input the chord symbols above the staff, and I noticed that should I decide to change the key of the song, well, that's easy enough,  but the chord symbols do not change.

Is their any fix for this,  or am I missing something,  a feature in the app that does it now that I missed?    Reinputting all those chords is such a chore.  I tried searching for this, and just see others registering the same complaint.

Hi!!
I'm asuming that you are talking about a sheet with a typical chord notation above, so please, can you tell us how do you input the chord symbols? I mean, depending on the way you do it, it could be solved or not...

If you insert the chords as text, then there's nothing to do... text is text and it's independent of the musical information on your score, sorry... but if you insert the chords using the ChordPlay.nw user object, then it changes automatically when you transpose the score using the "Transpose Staff" Tool.

Try it!! I think this User Object is the feature you're looking for... Unfortunately if you used the "Insert Text" option to insert the chords, I'm affraid you'll need to re-write all of them manually using the User Object in order to turn those "text symbols" into "musical symbols".

If someone out there has any other solution I'll be glad to read it!

Also, don't forget User Tools:  https://noteworthycomposer.com/nwc2/usertools/

As part of the user tool starter kit installation there is a tool for transposing Chords written as text - I use it all the time.  A little less convenient than the Chordplay objects when transposing, but as text chords are so much faster to enter it's a small price to pay

The tool is called "Transpose Chords (adp)" and exists in the ".Starter Tools" group.

ALSO, I just noticed a tool in the ".Automatic" group called "Convert Text To Chordplay.nw" - I suspect this may be automatically installed when installing the Chordplay object - I need to explore this one myself!

Where is this ChordPlay.nw thing  and how do I apply it in NWC ?        I need serious handholding here, thanks

Okay,  that works perfectly, thanks.  Funny thing,  I had some other text before the music started,  'Ballad Tempo"  and when I hit the transpose staff after installing the ChordPlay.nw via tools,   I needed to transpose up two semitones from F, , so it it  changed "Ballad Tempo"  to   "C#allad Tempo"   That's hilarious! ,    It couldn't distinguish chords from other text.   Still, I'll just make sure I do key changes before any other text is added where there are scale tones in the text above the staff.   Not perfect, but a timesaver, nevertheless.

I haven't used Chordplay other than to take a quick look, BUT IIRC there is a font selection option...
I'd be surprised if, after using the font selection to use a font other than the default and probably other than and of the fonts otherwise used in the song (like one of my *Chord fonts), the non-chord text is ignored.  NB I haven't tested this.
