Post by: jazzman999 on 2006-12-01 02:56 PM
Hi Warning to all who request the update CD... When you request the update CD beware of the Customs duty and tax. It cost £7.65 which you have to pay before you get the CD from the postie !!

Are you saying that a $15 USD upgrade package had an imposed charge of £7.65?

I had the same problem some time ago.  It would appear that British Customs at random seek out packages and impose duty on them. The British Post Office then delivers the package with a request to pay the Duty, PLUS a Post Office charge for handling and administration.  When I attempted to query this I was quoted official documentation justifying the charges.
In these circumstances one is almost unable to avoid either paying or losing the package which ypu have paid for.
It is extremely difficult to obtain from the relevant authoriies a simple ex[lanatyion of the rules. .

We warn about this in our order wizard, but the small value of the upgrade package used to avoid any UK custom fees.

I have found this relevant C&E document.

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000014&propertyType=document

reading paragraph 2.3 I would have thought that duty was not payable on an NWC CD
