Title: PSR 175 driver
Post by: Arun Unni on 2005-09-09 06:51 PM
Hi all

I have bought a Yamaha PSR 175 keyboard and have bought the MIDI cable, but I cant figure out where to get the driver that will allow NWC to connect to the keyboard. Can someone help please?

Arun

The PSR-175 is likely a rather old model Yamaha keyboard, with no USB or serial port output, only the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT jacks.  You cannot simply download a driver, you must have a hardware MIDI interface of some sort to connect the MIDI cables to the computer.  Probably your best bet is one of the 1 X 1 USB MIDI interfaces made by Edirol, Yamaha, MIDIman, etc.  Go to www.musiciansfriend.com and search for MIDI interfaces and you should be able to find a 1 X 1 USB MIDI interface for about $50 US.

Oops, brain fade after a long day!  PSR-175 is not an old model, but the rest of my post still applies, you still need a hardware MIDI interface.

MIDI interface?
Musical Instrument Digital Interface interface?

Yeah, I know it's redundant redundant.  But look in any catalogue and you will see those little boxes referred to as MIDI interfaces.  Of course, MIDI itself is not a hardware device or software, but a protocol agreed upon so that hardware and software can communicate and musical compositions can be stored and transmitted.

At the risk of seeming stupid I think in this case its not actually redundant at all...

As Milton says: ...MIDI itself is not a hardware device or software, but a protocol..., actually, he is only half right because MIDI is a standard that also defines a lot of other things like the connectors to be used and the electrical characteristics of the signals themselves etc.

However, as "Musical Instrument Digital Interface" is the name of a standard and a MIDI interface is a device that adheres (we hope) to that standard then the double use of the word is not actually redundant after all.

My tuppence,
Lawrie

Yeah... Like we have 'DNB Bank', over here.
'De Nederlandse Bank' Bank.

I prefer Amro Bank, anyway... (that's the name the Dutch translators gave to the character of Ford Prefect, in the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy)

I am new to the writing music with midi, but I wanted to know how do I get my PSR-175 to work, I have installed the driver and I have the interface and everything is all humpty dory but when I try to send a midi test it does not work, and the Music Notation software I have does not list my keyboard and it is very frustrating, but anyways does anybody know how to program instruments to there channels and have all of the settings correct to be able to play, and why does it not program itself.

Kendrick, I don't have a keyboard so I can't deal with your questions, but you might find an answer in the owner's manual, found here:
