Title: Bracketed notes
Post by: llucyy on 2005-04-11 06:20 AM
Is there any clever workaround to insert bracketed notes, for use in say, vocal music where sometimes in different verses, with the lyrics printed below one another, there is an extra pickup syllable. Really only needed for printed page, instead of just drawing the brackets in by hand.

I think one of the user fonts might have it, but you can just use ordinary text, I think.

Create this as text just in front of the note you want to bracket:

(  )

Adjust its vertical position, and then set its alignment as centred, placed "at next note."

You should experiment with the font face and size to find the one that best suits you.

Sometimes, this situation is represented by notes that are visually smaller than usual. You can find a selection of such notes, optimized for NWC, in some user fonts. Try NoteHedz or MusiSync. They are in the Scriptorium. I believe that NoteHez also has a way to fake a dashed tie (constructed from separate dashes), which is also used for this purpose.

I'm was having trouble downloading Notehedz.zip.  There appears to be an error in the address.

When you click on the font you will get The page cannot be found.

In the Address line, simply insert z near the end so that notehed101h.zip reads notehedz101h.zip.

Ah, the Scriptorium needs to know about that. On my own site, the link is correct (you can find it by searching for the font name).

Thanks guys, I tried all you suggested but am not over excited at the result.Guess I'll just have to make my own font.

NWC already has small notes for minims, chrotchets and quavers. These can be used as text by choosing the font. It is in  both versions . The characters are on F, G, & H respectively. The NWC slur font has a few useable dotted slurs which can be made larger or smaller by choosing a suitable font size.
