Title: Transpose Staff dynamically
Post by: Brett Hope on 2004-11-08 05:32 PM
Anyone know how you can transpose a staff other than in the Staff Properties tab?  For example if you have an oboe playing a staff, and want to change to a flute up an octave without re-writing the entire section.

Well, here is what I sometimes do.
When I find a midi file for SATB, most of the time the tenor is on a G-clef staff, but all the notes are one octave too low on the staff, and the G-clef should be a G-clef shifted down one octave (with a hanging 8 under it).
I then highlight the whole staff, hold down Ctrl-Shift and press the up arrow 12 times. Look at them go!
Maybe this is what you need, too.

I'd use Rob's method for quickly transposing part only of an instrumental or vocal line, but if the entire part  needs to go up an octave, why not just use Tools/Transpose/+12?

You can use a Pitch Bend MPC to achieve a small transposition dynamically, but you'll need to go to NWC2  and use an Instrument change (which includes transposition) for larger values.
