I have been using Noteworthy Composer (the finest piece of music software I have ever had the privilege to use) for about 8 years. Two days ago on start up but without an open file, I could hear random but musical noises from my PC. These are not hanging notes. A full reset of both the programme and sound card separately cause a slight halt but do not cure the problem. I have tried a reinstall with no effect.
I have some scoring to do, and I am getting desperate! If anyone can offer any suggestions for a cure, I would be grateful.
Everytime Noteworthy starts, it initialises the hardware. It seems that this action causes the sound card to act up. To me, this means that the soundcard itself has a (hardware!) problem.
You could do this: Start, Accessories, Entertainment, Volume control, and mute SW Synthesizer.
Playing a Noteworthy song will be mute. If you still have the noise you mentioned, it must be (in my view) a hardware problem indeed.

This generally is one of two things:
- A software incompatibility between your sound card and the MIDI driver that is installed on your system. Make sure you have the correct and latest version of the MIDI drivers for your card.
- A hardware problem with the MIDI Synth portion of your sound card.
You should also check your speaker and system volume gain controls. Avoid having the the system's mixer volume set low while the speaker volume is set high (which can introduce noise).
Many thanks for your suggestions. Having done all of the obvious hardware tests, I opened the programmed, and removed Midi mapper from the devices list in options. That shut it up!
I restarted my computer and reselected midi mapper. That seems to have fixed it for the moment.
