Title: Indicating hand clapping
Post by: Kevin P. on 2004-08-24 12:04 AM
I've put a song into NWC to which I want to add hand claps.  I've seen printed religious scores before where hand claps are indicated by an 'x' with a stem (like a double-sharp with a stem) above the staff instead of a regular filled-in note shape.  How could one accomplish a similar thing in NWC?  How would you guys/gals indicate hand claps in a piece of music?

Well, the current NWC doesn't allow you to notate any special note heads. The 2 version gives an option to leave the note without a head, so you can insert your own as a text entry using a special font.

Currently, I would make a single-line staff with normal notes, and designate this staff as a hand clap rhythm staff.

As mentioned above, you can only get this visually in not yet released version 2 (there are no X noteheads in version 1). You can get the sound in either version. The hand clap is a standard sound of the General MIDI drum kit. The start of the second bar, second staff of the Drumref.nwc sample file shows the correct pitch to use for a hand clap.

As mentioned, the capability is part of NWC version 2.

If you must do it in NWC 1.xx, you can add the X-hotes as "text items" (which do not sound) on a staff with hidden but audible regular notes (which do sound).

Some of my music fonts have a variety of X-head pre-formed notes. Try "MusiSync" at

But NWC2 is mo' betta'.

Thanks for the hints.  I have the latest preview release of version 2.  I've played with it some, but not enough to really notice how I could use the features to do what I need for this song.  You guys/gals have given me some great ideas to be able to do this like I want.  I really appreciate your input!  Thank you so very much.  This is very cool.
