Title: Descant
Post by: Kevin on 2004-07-22 02:57 AM
I have a satb song that is short and sung twice through (each staff ends in master repeat).  There is an alto descant that is to be sung only on the second iteration.  The descant is on a staff of its own below the bass clef staff.  How do I get this one staff to only play the second time through?  I'm using version 1.75b.

Use a hidden staff for the aural descant, with a number of whole rests the first time, and the notes the second time, and mute the visual staff.

D J's approach sort of works, but the note chase is all wrong.

A much more stylish method is to insert a 2nd Time Special Ending at the start of the descant staff, and then tack on a hidden extra bar (just before the Master Repeat Close) which consists of a 1st Time Special Ending, Local Repeat Open, Whole Note Rest, and Local Repeat Close with the length of the piece as the repeat count. That's the basic idea anyway: each piece probably needs its own special treatment.

Using multiple 1st and 2nd time special endings also works for variations in repeat playback - which I'd be happy to elucidate - but the essential idea is that you can put them anywhere within the loop.

Awesome!  You people rock!  It sound exactly like it should and it prints exactly like I wished it would, too.  Thank you, very much.
