Title: transpose from clarinet music to flute
Post by: kim moore on 2004-03-26 01:44 AM
Please help!  I have to transpose some music for my niece by tomorrow.  I have clarinet music written in the key of C.  I need to transpose it for a flute.  I just need to know what key the flute will play in and how many steps to go up or down with the notes.  Thanks so much!!!

last reply was right

you transpose from clarinet to flute by lowering the note two semitones, from the key of C to B flat. I know, since I play both clarinet and flute (and perhaps piccolo or bass clarinet sometime)

Go down 2 semitones is probably right.
But remember it might be for the clarinet in A.
If so, you should go down 3 semitones.
I don't think it is for the clarinet in Eb or Ab though.

You might also need to insert a key signature before performing the transpose, if one is not already present.

You might also need to take the transposed result one octave up. That is 2 semitones down and then 12 semitones up or just 10 semitones up. Ask your niece what range she is comfortable playing.
