Normally, a drum roll of, say, 8 thirty-second notes would be shown as a quarter note with 3 "slashes" through the stem. This can be "drawn" in NWC using special fonts, such as boxmarks. However, it will not play as a roll. To play the roll, you need to place the 8 notes on the staff. To get around the "ugliness factor," use two staffs. One is hidden, with the 8 notes, the other is visible, with the slashed quarter note, but muted.
Check out a piece which I posted on the Scriptorium called "Black Bear." at http://nwc-scriptorium.org/ftp/rock/bbear.nwc It is a fife and drum piece which contains rolls, flams, and ruffs (a.k.a half drags, or 3-stroke rolls). It uses a hidden staff to play the drumming, and a visible staff to show it. the "info" in the piece gives more details. It does require the "nwslurs" and "boxmark" fonts, downloadable from the scriptorium, to properly show some of the standard drumming notation.

I went to the scriptorium and downloaded the boxmark fonts, but when I searched for the nwslurs font it said 'no matched found'.  Please advise.
