Title: transpose to different key
Post by: Connie on 2003-12-22 05:26 PM
My children have music that was written for choir that needs to be transfered for flute and alto or tenor sax arrangements.  I have never been on this site before but am hoping that it will be able to help.  Can you point me in the direction to get started?
Thanks!  I will be checking this site for the next few days as we need it by the 24th.

Flutes read in concert pitch so don't need to be transposed.

Tenor saxes need to read 14 semitones higher than the sound.  So a choir middle C would be written as a 4th line D for tenor sax.  Use Tools Transpose +14

Alto sax is only 9 semitones - Use Tools Transpose +9

Depending on the range of the original, you may want to transpose the flute part +12.
Try it untransposed first, but if it sounds too low for the flute (even if it is technically within range), take it up an octave.

I have a hunch Audrey knows whereof she speaks.  It may be coincidence, but Gemeinhardt is a major flutemaker - check out its website at

Merry Christmas, all.
