Title: winamp / midi properties
Post by: Denise Busenitz on 2002-09-05 11:02 PM
This is unrelated to NWC, but I saw here a suggestion to use Winamp for converting the midis created to waves.  However, I liked what I had better, then when I uninstalled Winamp, I have lost the rightclick ability to see the properties of a midi file while in Windows Explorer.  Any suggestions?  I've gone back and reset the association to mplayer2.exe, but that didn't do anything.

Hm... the Properties option in the right-click context menu is AFAIK independant of association. You can verify this by right-clicking on files that aren't associated (usually things like .drv, etc.)

Sounds like something in Winwoes itself is broken. Try this: select (highlight) a file in Explorer, then press ALT-Enter on the keyboard. That should bring up the Properties dialog box.

Sorry, I didn't explain very well.  The basic properties are there, but there is only one tab.  I used to have three - the basic info on the first, the second contained the length and copyright info, then the third tab allowed you to play it.  I lost the second two tabs.
Thanks for any help.

Oh, interesting. Apparently Winamp adds the other tabs to the Properties option in the context menu. Although, I've been unable to duplicate it by associating .mid with Winamp (although, that's on a W95 OSR2.5 system). In short, I don't know.

VanBasco's Karaoke Player (http://www.vanbasco.com) displays the copyright info, lyrics, etc. in a separate window once you load a file; this might be an option for you if you don't like Winamp for whatever reason.

Actually, the three tabs were there BEFORE I installed Winamp.  I just use the Windows media player, and AudioRack mostly.  I saw the note that Winamp was better for converting midi to wave, so downloaded and installed it.  I didn't check the properties of any midi while Winamp was installed, but after uninstalling it, and reassociating the midis with mplayer, then the other tabs were gone.  Strange, hm?

Yeah, strange. Try this - uninstall/reinstall whichever version of Media Player you have. If this is whas was responsible for these shell extensions, it should be restored on reinstall. One would think, anyway... but with Winwoes? Who knows.

Already tried that.  Yes, I am used to trying to outsmart Bill's software.  :-)
