Title: PDA software suggestions
Post by: Eric Fretheim on 2002-04-16 03:32 PM
I would like to find a good Palm program for a musical notepad.  I've found a number of very uninspiring toys, but nothing I would seriously consider for jotting down ideas and keeping them safe and tidy.  Does anyone on this forum use a PDA for this purpose?

No, but I'd like to.
I sometimes have a music theme in mind, and using a PDA for this could be useful. Or is, rather: I just create a "note" in graphic mode, and simply draw the staff and notes.
It is the best way I've found yet (my PDA allows my graphic notes to have any length (not width) I want, so I just turn it anti-clockwise before starting to sketch my music. Which makes like in NWC : an infinite score :)
Of course it doesn't allow to hear it, nor to edit it easily (only some "undo"s).
Having a musical white sheet, a pencil and an eraser is a better solution, but I'm subject to lose such papers :|

That's my current method (except my software doesn't give the infinite extensibility you describe, so I have to do muliple "sheets" instead) and I am just as dissatisfied.  If I had a decent notation/playback choice, I would probably even upgrade to a multimedia-grade PDA.  I have nothing else likely to push me into converting from my old Palm III.

No one else has responded.  Is there really nothing suitable out there? or just no interest within the membership of this forum?

I'd suspect perhaps a bit of both. I'd see it as more of a niche interest, which as you imply is filled by "multimedia-grade PDAs".

Back when I was "palming," I found a program called "TS Noter."  It gave you the ability to jot down melody lines (single-note only, though) and play them back through your internal speaker.  The files were exportable out of the Palm and into a PC.  Don't know if they'd then convert to NWC.

Interesting. Is it for PalmOS only? maybe open source? I'm alas having a WinCE2 Philips Nino PDA...
