Is it possible to put a triplet across a bar line? I've done this by omitting the bar line in question, but I'd rather find a more elegant solution... Any ideas?

No, you have to fake it.
I've just come across another problem with triplets. You cannot beam them with ordinary notes. And a long standing one - you can't tripletize a dotted crotchet :-(
