Title: Help File
Post by: Ralph Todd on 2001-05-01 04:00 AM
I have been using NWC for a while and now for some reason every time I open it the help file comes up. I close it then everytime I move the mouse over a toolbar or menu - the help file comes back up and is active. Its really annoying and I can't do anything. Anyone else had this problem

There is no reason why this would be happening in NWC. If it is happening, you must have something really wrong on your system, as NWC does not contain any mechanism that would, or even could, do this. Unlike some other Win32 software, NWC does not use its Windows help file for toolbar tooltips, so there is no reason why its help file would pop-up during simple use of the program (a malfunctioning Winhlp32.exe program might be able to cause this with some other software, but should not with NWC).

Your first course of action should be to check for a virus on your system. Second, you might try running a copy of NWC straight from the NWC 1.70 CD, located in \Programs\Composer\NWC32.exe. If this works, then reinstall NWC from the CD.

If not, you need to find the cause of your problem. What did you do to the system before this first started?

I've seen this type of behavior too, although it's been a while and I can't remember whether I was running NWC at the time. I believe rebooting made it go away.

Good point: A full reboot (complete with power down) is always a good first step before trying anything else. This resets hardware and software, and will often clear the source for transient errors that develop on a system.

Always keep a good backup of your data files. Sometimes, a failing system will not return from a reboot when a disk drive or motherboard is developing a failure.
