Post by: izea on 2000-09-04 04:00 AM
Is there a way to convert songs on a cd to mp3 so that I can file them in my hard drive for an unlimited amout of time?

Yes. You need a CD ripper and an mp3 encoder. My favourites (both freeware / cardware) are Exact Audio Copy (eac) -- a very accurate ripper http://www.ExactAudioCopy.de/ and BladeEnc -- a very accurate mp3 encoder, especially at higher bitrates (better fidelity). Because of copyright insecurities in some countries, the executables aren't available at his home page (though the source files are); but you can get the Windows executable BladeEnc082.zip from http://home.swipnet.se/~w-82625/skeleton/DL.html -- then go to Tord's homepage at http://home.swipnet.se/~w-82625/default.htm for further information, and to pick up a Windows frontend if you don't like command-line programs. The one I use (and like) is BladeBatch by Eugene Loginov.

Also look at http://www.musicmatch.com/. Process is pretty simple and automatic. The freeware version is "near CD" quality. The small fee for an upgrade gets one to CD quality. (Of course, "near CD" quality is pretty good and occupies less space on your hard drive).
