Title: Writing Marches
Post by: Jordan on 2000-06-09 04:00 AM
Anyone have any tips for writing a good classical style march. I have been inspired by some of the great marches and dances by Mozart :)
Anyone have good rythems that I could use? Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

I always start with a structure. The typical "military march" commonly has the following form.

[Main section]
Intro - main tune - secondary tune

[trio section] in contrasting mood, often a more majestic tune
short lead-in - main tune - secondary tune

[reprise main section]

[optional reprise trio main tune] (especially if it's good)

Then, as for rhythms, keep in mind that marching feet need a very strong one-two pulse, and that syncopation should be used carefully, especially across barlines.
