Title: How to get an Empty Staff ???
Post by: Sam on 1999-06-28 04:00 AM
Hi,
The 'Staff Layering' feature is an useful workaround to many limitations (like Having stem both directions...)

But... consider if I need to do this (Stem Up & Down) only at (say) 20th bar. I have to separate the Melody and Alto right from the 1st bar. Because adding bars w/o notes in it does not align with bars in the other staff (w/ notes)

Is there any way-out ?????
To get an Empty Staff w/ OR w/o bar lines...

Easy.
What you need is not an empty staff, but a staff that doesn't display anything. Which is not directly possible.
But if you simply copy in your Alto part what you have in your Melody staff during (say) 20 bars, ou got what you want :-)

I would probably solve that problem by using chords if possible. One can make tails go in opposite directions with two-note chords in many situations, which may be all you need (if I understand the problem).

BTW, if empty staves are needed, they're already lying at the Scr.

Yes, you certainly can. Or hidden rests, for that matter, if you want the staff for display only. An example is:

frogsong.nwc (http://nwc-scriptorium.org/ftp/rock/frogsong.nwc)

where the top staff is for the rhythm guitar. (Use Print Preview to see what it actually looks like when printed)
