General Discussion / Re: New at this - Inserting Choruses?
I gotta agree with Rob on ease and speed, but it does depend on how much you use the program.  I will polish off a choral octavo in 45 minutes-2 hours (SATB and piano, or even more voices, and depending on the complexity), while it could take my wife a half day (guess who uses it more...).
Once you practice using it a bit, you will start flying through pieces in no time.
p.s.  I almost never use the mouse - keyboard is much faster.

General Discussion / Re: Various suggestions
As I've noted, I've seen a lot of things in print that aren't correct.  I suppose the Gounod Sanctus should be added to that list.  Some things should not be done simply because they can be done.

It is actually confusing...
and that would be why.

It's important to write for the musician who will read the notation
whether
Quote
it will be sight-read during performance, or only briefly rehearsed before performance,
or one might
Quote
rehearse it to death.
Quote
the most difficult parts to understand are those that are extracted by those who stick with the theory and don't enharmonically transpose notes
Ding!  Another point for Mr. Palmquist.  Always write horizontally, as that's the way it will be read.  There (usually) is no need for vertical correctitudes.  [Like that word?]  There was only one time in all my years of playing orchestra music that F F# Fn was preferable to F Gb F, and that was for intonation purposes only (yes, it made a difference, surprisingly).  It was still annoying to read the first few times, until I Noteworthyed it.

- beaming notes over bar lines
I have a workaround for this, but I would rather not have to use it.
It would be very nice to have it native to the program.
Quote
- tying between enharmonics
This is not done.  Tie from D# to D# (even if the key changes from, say, B Major to Eb Major), then all subsequent occurrences are called Eb.

RE Caravan and sound card - you haven't told us what sound card/synth you're using at home yet...

You've proven that the SB Live! at the school copes OK - I assume it was using either one of the sound font equipped hardware synth's, the SB softsynth or the m$ softsynth...

What do you use at home?

At home we have (don't laugh) ME [will be upgrading soon...].
Sound card is SB Live!

I'm very lucky.  Two years ago when using a chainsaw for the first time, I cut through my shoe and shredded my sock.  Foot was UNTOUCHED!
I could tell you more stories, but it's [glow=green,2,300]dinner[/glow] time right now...

General Discussion / Re: stuck notes (NOT hanging ties)
Okay, so, I'm with this group of kids who do community service (not court-ordered - they do it because they believe everyone should be invested in their community and take responsibility for it).  This particular event was on a highway that runs through town.  There happens to be a factory nearby that makes potato chips and other snacks.  At the factory, a minor explosion occurs (that part was on the news); drivers are startled and some lose control of their vehicles.  One of the vehicles is a massive truck transporting a pre-built house, which is on the flatbed, but has a built-in crane to lift the house into position when it arrives at its destination.  As the vehicle swerves, the crane lifts the house and swings it out to the side of the road where we were working.  The crane snaps from the force, the cable releases, and the house goes flying.  All but two kids and I were out of the line of fire.  BAM!  House lands on us, pinning us but not crushing us.  How is that possible?  There was so much mulch where we were that we were simply buried in it (I can still taste it...).  And because of the way the house swung out "in slow motion," it landed on us rather slowly.  We were held overnight in hospital and released the next day without any visible physical evidence of the accident, but were we exhausted from the ordeal (I had to be fed the following day...).  Needless to say [then why say it?], Noteworthy-ing Caravan seemed totally unimportant for a few days.
Oh, yeah, Caravan.  I just got rid of the MPCs to solve the problem.
Still don't know why it was happening...

General Discussion / Re: stuck notes (NOT hanging ties)
Thanks for the support, guys.

Okay, so here I am at my wife's computer at school, and everything works fine.
Her machine is much older than ours at home, but the operating system is newer (XP pro).
At home we have (don't laugh) ME [will be upgrading soon...].
Sound card is SB Live!
I haven't had too many problems with drops before, and I have all 13 horns shaking repeatedly in another chart (with even more pushing the audio edge)with no problems.
After I started having this sticking problem I thought maybe a defrag was in order, so I did that one night and the next day the sticking problem was still there.
I just don't get it...

For those wondering about the accident, I wanted to provide a link the the story, but it's not on any news service I could find.  Even the local news just glanced over it.
You'd think that if a house fell on some guy it would be a little more newsworthy...

I had no problems at all mate, once I realised I needed 2 synths configured :)  Couldn't figure out where the drums were...
Oops - I have no idea how the drums ended up on port 2.
I made a big band template with everything on port 1 so I could send MIDI files to all of the band members without worrying about configurations.
I thought that might be a cause so I just switched them to port 1.
This time the "hang" happened in m.46, and the one in m.97 was minimal.
Quote
BTW - is it supposed to be an NWC1 file?
Yup.  I'm still using v.1 (long story...). [And I had intended to post in the General Discussion area - don't know why it ended up in the v.2 {Maybe Eric could move it?}]
Quote
It could well be a polyphony problem.
That was my first thought, I have done this in other charts without problems.

Oh, but you should see hear some of the other things I've done...

General Discussion / Re: stuck notes (NOT hanging ties)
Hi, Lawrie,

I'm using MPCs for the diminuendo during the drop but actual notes for the pitch part of the drop (tried MPCs for both simultaneously - problem was worse...).
The drops in the earlier portion of the chart are fine so I'm focusing on one particular drop.
I've eliminated one MPC at a time, two at a time, etc. - can't find the offender.
The drop happens in 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, and 4 trombones, which I have done in other charts without problems.
Hey!  Maybe I'll attach the file to see if you have problems also.
The problem is in m.97, but if I start playing around m.90-ish everything's okay.
It's only when I start at the beginning.

General Discussion / stuck notes (NOT hanging ties)
I am working on a big band chart containing drops in all of the horn parts.
When the score is playing (whether or not Note Chase is on), one of the drops causes a "sticking" of the music.  It sounds as if there is a "traffic jam" and some of the notes can't get through, so others have to wait for them to catch up.  After about 6 seconds (of a 3-second passage), either eveything clears up and plays normally, or the music simply stops (as if I had pressed F6).
Is there something I can do to eliminate the problem?

General Discussion / Re: brushes
Thanks, Timoteus B, I'll give that a try.
I have been fooling around with Pitch Bend MPCs, and it "works" a bit, but not all that satisfactorily. [glow=yellow,2,300][where's that spell checker!?!!?!?][/glow]

G'day Josh,
umm, mate, "Image hosted by..."  Is this really what you want in your sig?
I also see that here at work, but at home it's a drawing of Josh (I presume).
My signature doesn't show at work either - it's just a little "hole" in the page with an X inside of it.

12 ,16 and even 24 notes to a beat.
No problem.
Assuming the beat is a quarter note, 12=32nd-note triplets, 16=64th-notes, and 24=64th-note triplets.
Fives and 7s (and any other [higher] prime numbers require a bit more work.
Check out the rest of the Tips area.

General Discussion / Re: Wish: moving keys for b, natural and #
The 256th notes aren't for viewing purposes.
I had a piece at a very slow tempo (44(?)) that had a few trills and other ornaments that sounded sluggish even with 128th-note triplets.
I have never seen them before (except in that gag audition piece or maybe a PDQ Bach engraving...).

Quote
...but where would we then find keys for sharp, natural and flat?
I had suggested [, ], and \ (see Reply #3), but I think using the shift key is a good idea.

General Discussion / Re: Wish: moving keys for b, natural and #
I would like 7 8 9 to be 64th note, 128th note, and 256th note (I have needed it before - just last week was the fourth time...), or maybe the brevis.
We could put flat, natural, sharp (yes, I'd rather have that order as well) on [, ], and \, as they are unassigned.  I suppose we then could have { and | for double-flat and double-sharp.

General Discussion / Re: Staff Labeling
Don't use a regular space (the spacebar).
Use the non-breaking space (nbsp). Hold the Alt key and press 0160 on the numeric keypad, then release the Alt key.
This will give something that looks like a regular space but functions differently.
The nbsp is allowed as a staff label.
I can't attach an example right now because I'm on a foreign computer, but I believe Caverns, found in your samples folder, uses the technique.

General Discussion / Re: Staff Labeling

This feature is not available in NWC1.
Well...
If the staves are called " " and "  ", then nothing will show in those spots (I used the nbsp [Alt+0160] for the upper staff and two of them for the lower.).
You then can add the label Piano as a Text Expression, justified right, or you can use a third staff labelled Piano placed between the upper and lower staves.  This staff should have Lines set to zero (I did run across a problem with this method when I first found out about it, but right now I can't remember what it is...).

General Discussion / Re: printing
It would be nice to have the option to print the odds only.
M$ Word does this as: 1,3,5, etc.
[then you would print 2,4,6 etc. in reverse order]
Having to do this manually is a bit of a (slow-)downer.

When printing two sides, do not use 20lb. paper (Oy! the bleed-through!).
Use at least 28lb., or 32lb if you can find it.

General Discussion / Re: Scriptorium Update
But isn't the whole world on broadband now? :-)
I'm not.
I live just a few miles from a large university.
About two thirds of the residents on the street are university faculty.
About another quarter are retired faculty.
They are all connected to the university's LAN.
The rest of us are apparently not worth running the DSL lines for...

*Just found out that the lines actually had been run about a month before I posted this.
This page used to take about 5 minutes to load:

General Discussion / Re: How Do I make a Staff wrap to the next line?
Wow, all of this sounds like the Electronic Music Stand I "invented" back in the mid 1980s.  I was rehearsing in my first pit orchestra and we had to mark a lot of cuts/changes, and I also had some really lousy page turns.  I mentioned to someone that the conductor (or his assistants) simply should be able to program all of the modifications on some kind of screen and that the changes would automatically appear on screens on our stands.
Twenty years later, I attended a show and saw the pit using "my" invention (too bad I couldn't have made a prototype, or even some schematics...)!
So, they do exist, but I hear they're very expensive (buy very easy to use).

General Discussion / Re: Midi Channels
Drums should be left in the centre of the pan.
They are a stereo instrument.
Move them out of the centre and you lose the stereo effect.
Whether I use F2 Midi tab Stereo Pan:
or MPCs, I cannot change anything on channel 10.
What's left is left, right is right, and center is centre.

One very effective way to ... give your arrangement a richer sound ... is to stereo pan different parts left and right to simulate the physical placement on the stage of the players in an ensemble.
I have a number of old compositions and arrangements in which I employed this technique.  The left and right instruments turned out much quieter than the centre, so I had to boost the dynamic levels.  Since I've been using a newer computer [glow=beige,2,300][which is now over 5 years old, haha][/glow], the effects are reversed - the left and right instruments are now much louder than the center, so I have to cut the dynamic levels.
I am curious as to which situation exists on most computers.

General Discussion / Re: Beta 2.08 : Dots placement
I don't recall too much being wrong with the old dot/double dot vertical placement...

The augmentation dot should be centered between the staff lines (or leger lines), whether the note is on a line or in a space.
In NWC, they always touch a line (I can't check this new version, though, as I still am using NWC1 - more on this at some other time...).
If I have time and the score/parts have to look really good, I insert the dots as text items.
Tedious?  You bet.

While we're on dot placement, the staccato dot's placement should be centered over (or under) the notehead, but it is slightly to the right.
If I have time...

General Discussion / Re: Problem using repeat bars and DC al Code
The standard practice is to use only final endings when employing a D.C. al Coda (or D.S. al Coda, D.C. al Fine, or D.S. al Fine).
NWC follows this practice.
There are exceptions; sometimes there will be an indication "with repetitions," so I wish there were an override for the default.

General Discussion / Re: A heated argument at last night's music practice.
I prefer the first (upper staff) example.
It just looks cleaner.
However, here's another sample to view.
The second bar has no “imaginary bar line,” making it trickier to read.
I have seen the Incorrect version countless times in published music, even engraved music.

General Discussion / Re: Help for non-composer users
Wow!  That's the easiest explanation ever!
I tried it and it works quite well.
However, a 50K MIDI file turns into a 23.4M Wave file,
an 89K MIDI file turns into a 41.9M Wave file, etc.
Is that right?  Am I doing something wrong?

General Discussion / Re: Modes
There is also a Major Blues scale, which I didn't know (officially) until about three years ago.
In relation to the Major scale the notes of the Major Blues scale are : 1 - 2 -#2 - 3 - 5 - #5 - 6 - 1.
I've heard it used many times over the years without realizing it (Hey!  What's that trumpet player doing?!?  That's not a Blues scale!).
Found it in an old improv book and [shadow=green,left][glow=yellow,2,300]DING!  [/glow][/shadow]everything made sense.

General Discussion / Re: rhythm section soli
Thanks, Barry, what a fascinating read!
I suppose that will speed up my sequencing of the parts a bit, although I'm not sure how I'll accomplish the muted effect with only one staff.
That should be a fun experiment.
