General Discussion / Re: Autosave Operation Failed
Thanks guys. I'll have to give some thought to the options. John, the Gamer card was $30.00 more than the Audio when I purchased the machine. I doubt very much that they would take a trade-in and upgrade me now. But Hey, if I can solve this with an $80.00 card, it will certainly be worth it to me. Thanks again as always.

General Discussion / Re: Autosave Operation Failed
Bill,
You may be right. I have thought about going back to XP. What keeps me from doing that right off is that everything that is on the pc at this point uses vista drivers. While I really have no idea about these things, it seems to me that this would create more problems than it would solve and I would be tearing my hair out in tufts. If I do decide to go that route, I will have a professional do it for me.

Lawrie:
The Model is Pavillion d4995t
Processor R Core 2 Quad Cpu Q6600 2.4 GHz
Ram 3071 MB
Vista 32 bit Operating System
1. Realteck High Definition Audio
2. Sound Blaster  X-Fi Extreme Audio (Vista)
3. ViXS Pure TV-U 48B0 (NTSC/ATSC combo)
The only software I have installed is NWC Viewer, NWC 1&2. I also installed Yamaha Musicsoft downloader for my keyboard and Midiplayer, another keyboard related software, neither of which I have used yet, and some bible (text only) software.
The problems I am experiencing occoured long before I installed these last programs. Everything else was pre-installed on the machine from the box.
I did have to move my NWC song files from Program Files because Vista won't allow storage within the program. Other than that, I don't believe that I have changed anything.
I think we have already established that the X-Fi Audio has no access to the soundfont bank which would have been nice to know pre-purchase. I certainly would have spent the extra $30.00 for the gaming card which does allow access. I am not a gamer so the Extreme Audio card sounded like the right choice. After wasting my time with the HP techs. I have given up all hope. Either they know there are inherent problems with vista and sound and don't want to admit it, or they are clueless. Either way, the problem lies square in my lap. Totally exasperated! Again, sorry for the rant.

General Discussion / Re: Autosave Operation Failed
Lawrie, the silent staves is a very random issue. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. If a particular staff doesn't play along with the others and I change its channel, it may cause the rest of the staves not to play, or for only some of the others not to play. I don't get it at all. Other times I will open a file that previously didn't play and it will play! All of these files were written on NWC, so I would think that they should play back without any problem. I raised this issue several months ago on the forum but I thought it was just a temporary glitch as it seemed to have dissapeared as quickly as it came, but of course it is back and is quite annoying.
It seems that whenever I make my problems known to the manufacturers of either the software or the hardware, they end up pointing fingers at each other and I am still stuck with the problem. You have probably noticed my absence from the community for quite a while. I just get tired of banging my head into a wall. I'm just going to look elsewhere at this point. Thanks for your help once again. D

General Discussion / Re: Autosave Operation Failed
Forgive me in advance because I know that this is not going to sound very nice on account of I'm FRUSTRATED once again.
Since I've had a new computer running Vista, I haven't written anything musically. Partially because I have been busy with other things. The other reason I haven't written anything is that I can't seem to get NWC to function properly. I understand that the new format of vista requires some changes in connection with how files are managed or set up, and I understand that this is not any fault of NWC.
However, I do feel that if I purchase a program (however nominal the cost), it should work. If the operating platform changes, the program may have to change too. As I say, I realize that this change is not the fault of NWC, but nor is it mine. There will come a time when XP will be the dinosaur that 3.1 has become and only a few will be using it. Everyone else who buys your product will expect it to install so that it functions properly.
I have no idea how to implement the changes in file configuration that have been suggested because that is not my thing. In essence you are speaking a foreign tongue. Just for example, "Pointing Files" is a new one on me. Never heard of the expression and I doubt that I am alone.
So far I have at least 3 problems that I didn't have before vista arrived on the scene. One or more of these may not be related to the program itself, but I just don't know.
First, I still have the problem with staves that are silent for no apparent reason. When I open a file, I don't know if all of the staves are going to play or not. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I find it impossible to work within this limitation. No one has been able to solve the mystery behind this bizarre behavior.
Second, If I don't manually save my work, I may loose it because the auto save feature doesn't seem to work.
Thirdly, the sound is similar to an old transistor radio because the sound font bank cannot be accessed from NWC.
While I realize that this is not a limitation of NWC software (as far as I can tell), these three problems together have rendered this program usless to me as a writer.
It seems to me that if the auto save file needs to be in a specific location in order to function properly, that is should be located there on setup. I do not have the skills or knowledge to move things around and I don't feel that I should need to.
Like I said before, when I install a program, I feel it should work.
Sorry for the rant but sometimes....

General Discussion / Re: Autosave Operation Failed

I also get the same message. Running Vista - figured it was just one more glitch I could do without. I'm not sure I understand the solution. Where should the auto save folder be?
Here is what I have under  |Tools| Options|Folders|

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Thanks Lawrie! Just spent 30 min. on the phone with HP only to be disconected when they couldn't answer my questions. It was obvious from the start that the technician ( term used very loosly ) had no clue as to what I was trying to relate to her. When I purchased the PC, the difference in price between the audio and the gamer was $30.00 US. I certainly would have spent the extra dough if I was aware of this problem. I do not have any interest in gaming and thought that the X-Fi Audio would be the ticket. Really frustrating I have to say. At this point, will I run into lousy soundfonts if I get the gamer and still have problems? Do you know anyting about this Yamaha SW1000? I thought I had purchased top-of-the-line equipment this time. Wrong again! Thank you so much for all of your help here, you are one in a million.

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Well I don't like the sound of that at all! No Globbilink, there were no XP or any other drivers sent with the machine. Everything was preinstalled. I haven't had a chance to contact HP support yet as I know that will probably take a chunk of time, but I do intend to do that.

General Discussion / Re: No sound from one staff
I do not know what the progression was. I had just loaded my files on to a new computer and was checking out how they sounded with the new sound card. Not good, but that's another story. Sounds like Music John may have hit on someting. I'm just glad it went away. I tend to freak out a little when those kind of things happen. Thanks guys for the input.

General Discussion / Scripto downloads open in NWC 1
For some reason, when I download a file from the scripto, instead of opening NWC2, which the file was created in, NWC1 opens and of course cannot open the file. I'm sure (hope) there is a simple solution.

General Discussion / Re: No sound from one staff
I don't know what could have happened, but I finally shut down the computer and later when I rebooted, the strange behavior was no more. YAY! Just hope it doesn't happen again. Thanks to all for the assistance.

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Hey Lawrie - The link you sent last time did not work at all so I went to Creativelabs.com and tried the download there. That's where I got the message about no hardware installed. The new link seems to be an application for gaming. It says: This download is an application for Creative Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ series of audio devices. It restores 3D audio and EAX® effects for certain DirectSound®3D games in Microsoft® Windows Vista™.

Fixes:
Enables the DirectSound3D game audio to be processed by your Sound Blaster X-Fi to deliver EAX effects, 3D audio spatialization, sample rate conversion and hardware audio mixing. Without this, most DirectSound3D games will be reduced to stereo output without any EAX effects.
Do not install this application if you do not play DirectSound3D games in Windows Vista.
Do not install this application if you already have Creative ALchemy version 1.00.04 or later installed.
The application called CreativeAlchemy is dated Oct 1, 07. My PC was built in Nov. Doesn't sound like this is the download for me but just want to make sure.
l Start l Programs l Creative l Sound l Sound Blaster X -Fi l brings me to sub folders:
Creative Audio console Brings up box with drop down menu for "Select Device" (X-Fi selected) - tabs for X-Fi Crystalizer, Headphone Detection, Restore Defaults, Speaker configuration, EAX effects, and X-Fi CMSS-3D
Creative Console Launcher There are supposed to be 3 Configuration modes here: Audio Creation Mode, Entertainment Mode and Game Mode. The on-screen instructions say to press the Mode button to change modes, however I do not see a mode button or tab and the Help file does not come up with Mode or Audio Creation Mode - So much for their idea of Help.
Creative Diagnostics - I have a feeling that the diagnostics will run and come back with no problems found because it won't look for what I am looking for.
Creatie Volume Panel - Self explanatory
Documentation (Online Manual) - Nothing in the index about sound font bank.

Gotta run again!

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Well the speakers are plugged into the back of the machine and all of the sound card ports are on the front, so I am assuming that I am plugged into the motherboard which uses a small headphone type jack. There are RCA ports on the front but I don't know if they are input or output. One of the problems is that they (HP) installed everything and there is no literature on the sound card or any of the installed software. The manual for the PC is strictly generic and doesn't get into anything that might be optional such as type of soundcard etc.
As you know, I am technically challanged and at least half of what you say is a foreign language me so there is no way that I am going to open up the PC and start messing with its innards. When I have a little time I will call HP support as I purchased the machine directly from them. They should be able to help me. Perhaps this problem has come up before. I am going to ask my nephew to have a look also. He is a computer tech but when I start talking MIDI he gets a little nervous. Like most, Mp3 is what they are familiar with, that is why I came to this forum where we understand what we need. It's kind of like having a software/hardware recognition problem only with people. I am sure it will all work out in the end. It always does. I thank you for your help and patience, I really do appreciate your efforts. Just wish I had a better head for this stuff. I'll keep you posted.

General Discussion / Re: No sound from one staff
Hey Rob -
The file contains 3 staves. Vocal & piano acc. The vocal plays and is on channel 3, right hand on 1 and left on 2. The right hand does not play.
I switched channels for the right and left hands and now neither of these staves will play!
With voc and right hand on channel 3 and left on channel 5, the left hand only plays.
With the channels changed to Voc. - 1, Right Hand - 2 and Left Hand - 3, No staves play! This is absurd.
After changing the configuration back to the first one, no staves play.
After deleting the lower staff I still get no playback from the other two.
I then started over, copied the non-playing staff, then deleted it. The other staves played. I then added a new staff and pasted the deleted staff onto it and all staves played! I definately do not understand this behavior. Virtually all of my files are showing the same problem. This won't do at all.
Starting a new file from scratch seems to work fine although I haven't tried all the possibilities.
Is it possiblie that the instrument patches in the new sound card are incompatable with what I used when writing the originals on my old computer? I don't get it.

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Sorry about all the messages. I just looked in the device manager again. Under "Sound Video and Game Controllers" is listed
1. Realteck High Definition Audio
2. Sound Blaster  X-Fi Extreme Audio (Vista)
3. ViXS Pure TV-U 48B0 (NTSC/ATSC combo)
Is it possible that NWC is somehow using one of the other sound generators and if so, how do I get it to use the SB?

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Lawrie, I just went to the Device manager and checked out the sound card and it says that it is working properly, I then had windows search for the driver update and a message came back saying that I had the latest drivers insatlled already, however I still only have MIDI mapper and GS wavetable synth available in NWC2 for playback devices. Very frustrating!
71
General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Well, an interesting thing happened. When I tried to download the driver update I got a message: Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this setup program. My question is: What is playing the sound on my machine if not the soundcard that is supposed to be installed? All of the software was pre-installed on the machine and it did not come with any seperate discs except for the monitor and printer.

General Discussion / No sound from one staff
When I open files in NWC2, (since changing to Vista), in each file there is one staff that won't playback. The staff is not muted and I can't seem to figure out why it won't sound. There is an instrument assigned to the staff and I get the same thing using MS Midimapper or wavetable synth as the midi playback device. I haven't made any modifications to the files so I don't unhderstand what the problem might be. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
Hey Lawrie, I just noticed your reply. Been rather too busy to mess with this issue of late. I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Do you mean the latest drivers for the X-Fi soundcard? I went to the website and don't see the other card listed. Looks like I am going to have to look up the exact version of Vista operating system before I can download the drivers anyway, but it's too late to do it now. Is it possible to use the midi keyboard as the sound card using a midi/USB cable? (somehow I think that would be more involved than I am capable of comprehending - you know how I am!) If I don't go to bed now I may not wake up for work tomorrow. Thanks for the help. - D.

General Discussion / Re: Unable to save files
I was going to get permissions to write to those folders but found that Microsoft has hidden the Administrator account pretty well in Vista. It is not a simple procedure to log on as administrator as in XP and earlier versions and I understand that if you don't do it just right, because of a bug in the program, you can be locked out of windows altogether. While I get the reasoning behind this move, it seems quite intrusive to say the least. I'm sure the hackers in time will find their way around this overprotective measure like they do everything else. At any rate, I see the wisdom of keeping song files seperate from the program so I am just going to go with that option, even though it is a little inconvenient. Thanks for the advice.

General Discussion / Unable to save files
I have been wracking my little brain trying to figure out what I have done wrong, but have been unable to solve this problem. I recently purchased a new computer and immediately installed NWC 1.75 and then the upgrade to NWC2 which I have been using since it came out. I then moved all of my NWC2 files into the program. When I open a file from the SAMPLES folder that comes with the program, make a change and save, these are the messages that come up:
1. This file has changed, do you wish to save it? (yes)
2. This is a read only file. Try anyway?  (yes)
3. Unable to create a BAK backup for this file. Save anyway? (yes)
4. This file failed to be properly saved.

If I start a new file and go to save it, I see this string of messages:
1. This file has changed, do you wish to save it? (yes)
2. C:\ProgramFiles\NoteWorthComposer2\SAMPLES\SONG2.nwc You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the Duncan folder instead? (no)

At some point, I don't remember exactly what the flow of operations was, I saw a message saying something like the Autosave operation failed. What gives?
I am using Vista premium home edition. TIA - D

General Discussion / Re: No sound
Open NWC, then go to Tools > Options > Midi Tab. You will see two windows. If there is nothing in the right window, move one of the devices from the left pane to the right by selecting it, then hitting the top arrow. Conversely,  if there is more than one device listed in the right pane, move all (to the left pane) except the one you want to use for playback. If this doesn't help, then go to Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage audio devices and see if anything is out of whack there. Hope this helps.

General Discussion / Re: Tunings other than Equal Temperament
Perhaps you can get your hands on a Yamaha keyboard. I know that mine can be set to 6 or 7 different preset tunings including Pythagorean, Arabic, Werkmeister, Kirnberger, Pure major and minor... although I am not familiar with any music that requires these.

General Discussion / Re: Problem with fonts in Vista
OOPS! I did not extract the files before dragging them. Sorry to cause a stir. Thanks all for the assistance. I will be back for more assistance soon as I see another problem on the horizon. Too late to get into it now though. Thanks again for the help.

General Discussion / Re: Problem with fonts in Vista
I dragged and dropped into the Windows Fonts folder. What shows up in that folder is Wingdings, Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3 - all as Open Type. As I remember, this is what I did the last time in XP Home Edition and it worked fine. I could be wrong. I also remember being able to see all of the font types seperately in the Font Folder.

General Discussion / Problem with fonts in Vista
I just installed Lawries Swing Dings, and Music Serif/Sands to the Windows/Fonts folder, however, when I go to page setup in NWC2, the fonts are not an option, only NWC2STDA appears.  Also, if I bring up a file that already uses one of these fonts (from my old computer), the font option appears in the dialogue box, but the font in the file is a string of odd characters. I restarted the computer after installing the fonts and there is no change. Any guidance is appreciated. TIA

General Discussion / Re: Sound sucks on Vista or is it something else?
OK - I did the foolish thing, but I seemingly had no choice. My pc died a couple of months ago and the new one has Vista installed and of course the sound is atrocious and completely unacceptable! The sound card is SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio (vista) (sounds like it should sound great right?). The available playback options in NWC are MS GS Wavetable Synth and MS MIDI Mapper. Both sound the same. So, if I install the soundcard from my old computer, will it sound like it used to? The old sound card was Santa Cruz by Turtle Beach. Not a bad sounding card for the most part.

General Discussion / Re: Gettin' along...
Hey Lawrie,
I'm not sure what flaming is but I'll assume that it is something like an angry rant. I have never been able to get to the news group because I couldn't set up the Outlook Express properly, however!!!, I shall try again when my new PC arrives. (I have been without one for weeks as the old one finally croaked! :) Wondering what translation says Holy instead of Righteous. While He is my righteousness, we are commanded to be holy as He is holy. Ta-ta.

next three digits on 2.3 & 4 - for durations
Thumb for space bar
ball of hand for hitting  ctrl or ctrl/shift simultaneously

Right Hand
Middle finger on enter
index for slur, ties, and dotted durations
pinky on arrows

Eyes on material I'm copying from. Occasional mouse use.

I notitice that this configuration would not work so well on my sons laptop though as the arrow buttons can't be reached by the right pinky.

General Discussion / Re: Timing or Mathmatical Problem

bidderxyzzy  - My wife reminds me with some frequency that it's not necessarily what you say as much as how you say it. She's right!  We understand that you and your people are doing real and important things, but realize that the endevors of others are just as important and real as yours. It's not necessary to offer anything to anyone for their kind and polite assistance, however a simple "thanks" is common courtesy here on this forum as well as anywhere else in the world, even if their efforts don't bring about the desired result. The idea, I believe is to have a place where we can come to get help when we need it from knowledgable people who use the same program as well as to reciprocate when we can. Different points of view are welcome as that is how we may best solve our problems. And I have to agree, if you have pissed off Lawrie, you have to be trying very hard so please, Lighten up! General Discussion / Re: More about harmonizing
Hey Eduardo,
Harmony assistant does allow you to import NWC files. I am not sure how the harmony thing works because I found the program inherently difficult to use and lost interest quickly. I have imported both NWC and midi files made on my keyboard. The nice feature I found is that the program plays back the same sounds as are put in. In other words, the sounds are not changed from your midi when imported as they are in NWC. Why I couldn't say. I'm sure that someone else out there has a better understanding about that issue.
87
General Discussion / Re: MIDI volume level being raised?
It seems that the idea was to counteract the automatic zero volume set by the Media Player. It's probably best not to get too complicated here. If the initial volume on start up is automatically set somewhere below the medium range, or even within the low range, that would avoid all those inquiries having to do with playback problems without annoying everyone else. I don't think that the program should adjust the volume after it has been initialized and set by the user.

General Discussion / Re: "Open Files"
Sounds as if something got mixed up by accident. (And I thought this kind of thing only happened to me!)
Here's what I suggest. Open NWC2>open files> right click the itrees folder and hit Rename on the dropdown list. Rename the itree folder Samples and press enter. Now right click in the white space within the open folder dialogue. Put the cursor on New which will lead you to the option for Folder. Click Folder and name the new one (folder), itree. You can then drag and drop the files into the new itree folder that belong there, and your new samples folder will be the default folder to open. Hope that does the trickfor you.

General Discussion / Re: outside opinion
Hey Christian,
Nice work. I was playing around with the Cannon and found that by moving the notes up from D in the original left hand piano part, to B, you will still keep in harmony while taking away the Pachelbel sound to the piece. Also I have noticed that you seldom use time signatures, even in your finished pieces on the Scripto. Any special reason for that?

General Discussion / Re: NWC Viewer limitation
Hey Lawrie,
Doesn't matter who collects it, it still doesn't help the NWC peeps.  If they (those who do the singiing), rely that much on the program....well, we pretty much covered that already. I figure if I was in the shoes of the programmer, I wouldn't do it no matter how simple it was, for what I think are obvious reasons. It seemed to me from previous posts that Ole is the music director which would mean that he would probably have some input as to how the money is spent.  I could be wrong. (It's happened once or twice before I think!)
Pause in NWC? Why not? To the wish list with you! Always a pleasure, mate.
98
General Discussion / Re: NWC Viewer limitation
Ole,
I think your logic is askew. Just because many or even most of those who respond to a thread centering on choral issues doesn't mean that most NWC users are choal [only] musicians. It simply means that they responded to something that interests them. Those who share other interests musically speaking, respond to issues that interest them. I stay away from the technical stuff (programming etc.), because it leaves me cold, but others enjoy that aspect of this tool and can add to the knowledge pool.
While it is nice that NWC can be many things to many people, I would dare to say that it was probably created with the composer in mind, hence the name Noteworthy Composer. Not that it matters, whatever your use it's worth the modest price. The $100.00 annual fee that you collect is not helping the folks at NWC in any fashion. I suppose that the time required to implement the changes that you suggest would certainly cost them money however simple they may seem.
Would it be possible to use some part of the funds you collect to purchase licenses for each member, that way they could do all the things they want, and more. I understand that you are afraid that some might fiddle with the piece being practiced, (not that there's anything wrong with that!), but most choristers I know are pretty good at taking direction. Just a thought!
