General Discussion / Re: playing music copied onto disc
Rik
I'm not sure this will work, but if you have the older version of NWC still on your comp, right click the file from the disc > open with> NWC. Now save the file and close it. Now, as if you were going to re-open the file, display the files and right click the one you want. From the drop down list, choose "open with NWC version 2". Then save in NWC2. Make sure you have the correct folder displayed so that it will be saved in NWC2, otherwise it will be lost somewhere you may not so easily find. Hope this helps.

General Discussion / Re: Bizare behaviour
Hey Lawrie,
I was wondering when you were going to jump in. So I tried a few things just to test the functionality of audit bar lines. Oh yeah, that could do a real number on me. I get confused way too easily. Maybe I'm just a control freak at heart but I don't like things that are automatic. The result never seems to be exactly what I had in mind.  As far as bar lines, they may not be necessary but they add structure and make music easier to read. It's easy enough to get lost as it is. And again John, just because the program allows you to do something, doesn't necessarily make it correct. I find that this is a useful tool when used properly, (ie. the chord with different lenght notes).

General Discussion / Re: Bizare behaviour
Aaaah! As there was only one staff, I thought that's what you meant! Either way, I still don't understand the function of audit bar lines. If there is more than one staff, it is easy to see where the measures don't line up when the beats per measure are incorrect. I guess I should have a look at it one of these days.

General Discussion / Re: Bizare behaviour
Milton,
I tried selecting the staff as you suggested, but then "audit bar lines" becomes unavailable. I have never used this function and didn't know what it was about. Anyway, I tried it without selecting the staff and nothing happens.
The way I see it, you can write lots of things that are not correct. You can write a piece all in tied 8th notes if you want, (and you may want to if you are writing for a stringed instrument to show bow direction), but you would only confuse a vocalist with such a mess. This is where your musicianship comes in. I am glad that NWC allows you to do it the way you want. If it is wrong, someone will catch it!

General Discussion / Re: Bizare behaviour
If only the first half note was coupled with the whole note it would not be unusual. The second whole note does present a problem. I didn't even look at the music as I listened. I thought you were speaking of the attachment function itself. I understand that if the program allows the first chord, which counts as one half beat, it would have to treat the second in the same way, as it obviously does.

Hello Nigel,
I downloaded the example just to see what you were talking about, and I am not sure I follow: I was first asked what program I wanted to use to open the file, (Chose NWC2), and it opened the application properly.  I was not impressed with the content, but the operation of the attachment went fine. What behavior did you encounter exactly?

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
Wow! Your life sounds a lot like mine.  Nothing  goes as planned. I used to get all bent out of shape over the like, but it never made anything better, so...! Sounds like you have a fine group. Whenever you get to it will be more than fine.
By the way, I heard you talking to someone about the french horn, and you were saying that the available horn synths or sound fonts ( I don't know the difference), were not so good. I think that one of the problems with them is that they don't come across so well on the pc as they do on a keyboard synthesizer simply because on the keyboard, you have built in dynamics that are hard to reproduce when notationg for playback by a computer. What is written is for the performer to interpret. As you know, every performer will have his own style and interpretaiton of any piece. The same synth or sound-font that is used on say a Yamaha pc sound card is probably used on their synthesizer, but the difference is in the performance. I have written a piece called "Thank You Jesus", (lyrics by one of our teens), with horns in it. I (not being a horn player), would probably not know on hearing it that it is not a real horn.
I would send it to you but I don't know how! (Not the most computer literate). It is in mp3 form and I don't think that is one of the file types allowed as an attachment on the forum. I know that you sent me an MP3, but I don't remember how.
Anyway, thank you for all your effort so far. - D.

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
Hey Rich,
Thanks for your reply. Actually I do have NWC Viewer inatalled and I updated it recently because the one it would not open a file I created in NWC2 after downloading an upgrade in the version. I would think that what you are saying is correct, but it doesn't seem to work that way. At least not for me.  There was another comment from someone else (Josh the M?) recently who said that he had to rename the files in order for NWC to open them. I'm not sure what he meant by that. I would think that as long as it has an .nwc or .mid extension it should open right? Anyway, its not really a big deal. I can still open the attachments, it just takes an extra step.

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
I've come across a problem with attached files. When I download and open, the original NWC program starts and I get a message that the file can't be opened because it was produced on a later version.  Then I have to download to floppy, and from there open with>>>NWC2. Is there some reason that the NWC2 doesn't automatically come into play?

General Discussion / Re: Frustration with new forum
Well folks, I can't stand it anymore. I was annoyed with myself for posting this rant in the first place but once I pushed the button it was too late to take it back. I really must apologize. The truth is that the NWC program as inexpensive as it was, has brought me many hours of pleasure and learning experience as I know it has  to you all. On top of that I feel like I know this group of users to some degree which is a very nice extra. It's wonderful to be able to exchange ideas with all of you, even if this new format is a little trying at times. I know that the folks at NWC don't owe me anything and it is great that they would ask for my input.  I know that they work very hard on the program that we all love and I have a feeling that when the new version is finally released it will be full of surprises. So I thank them for their industry, and while I'm at it, thanks to those users who have come up with the user tools which are also pretty amazing! Sometimes things change. It aint all bad!

Hey Lawrie,
I'm excited! And I must say honored. I heard the copy you sent. Looks like you were up late. Sounds nice. It looks like we have a time difference as I'm in New York. I really have to run as I'm already late for work. Talk to you later. Thanks again and God Bless!

General Discussion / Re: Timing or Mathmatical Problem
Carl,
I am wondering why you would want to hide the quarter rest.  Felisek's solution is correct. The half note still stretches the half plus the eighth beat it is tied to. The rest just allows the next quarter note (the B#), to attack where you want it to (half way through the half beat), instead of after the duration of the half note. This is quite acceptable notation. I have run into this kind of thing many times when copying from sheet music. The way it is written doesn't always fly when you start counting the actual beats.

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
Well Lawrie and John, I'm flattered that you would want to use my piece. I would more than happy to give both of you permission to use it in your services. I hate to see it sitting on my computer doing nothing at all! Thanks for the encouragement!

General Discussion / Re: Timing or Mathmatical Problem
Well David,
While my son is a drummer, I haven't spent much time looking at the actual notation of drum music so I don't know if that is unusual or not. I suspect I shall have to ask him.  I was talking about the beaming (or non-beaming), problem.  That, I think would be annoying to me if I was to notate for drums.
The other problem (the one with timing of notes), does not pose a problem that I can see.  When you tie notes together to lengthen the sustained duration between measures, you can chop up the time in whatever fashion will work, but you can't put 4 quarter beats in a 3/4 measure and expect it to line up vertically with a 3/4 measure that contains 3 quarter beats!
275
General Discussion / Re: Timing or Mathmatical Problem
Carl,
It seems to me that you have an extra quarter beat in the third staff which makes it 4/4 instead of 3/4. Changing the half note to a quarter gives you the correct timing for the measure.  i.e. -  What you have is 4 quarter beats in a 3 quarter beat measure - or maybe I'm missing something? I'm questioning myself because it seems that none of the others who replied are seeing that.

General Discussion / Re: Feature Request: Subtitle
Hey Bob,
I,m thinkin' that church music shold be based on the Holy Scriptures, not on other songs. There's plenty of inspiration between Genesis and Revelation to keep any songwriter going. that said, I think it would be nice to be able to have extra fields in the Title/Composer/Lyricist area.

General Discussion / Frustration with new forum
Am I the only one who is feeling frustrated here? I find this forum so complicated that it is not worth the time it takes to figure it out. I am not technically inclined and my life does not revolve around computer screens. I write music! NWC is a tool used to achieve a certain end.  I understand that it is desirable to improve this tool in certain areas because the work-arounds required to attain certain results are rediculously tedeous (sp?), however I have seen requests for what seem to me to be simple and doable improvements over and over to no avail.  It does not seem reasonable to put the program out there for testing and then quibble about minutia that doesn't amount to anything while requests for real improvements go unanswered. For example, 8va... is a tool that is universally understood and used in standard notation. It is not an outlandish request. The idea that you have to download a font from an external source, incorporate it into your font file, then use hidden staves so that playback reflects what is written is crazy. It can get very complex when you edit your work later and have to deal with these hidden staves etc... Besides, that is only one work-around for one problem. When you use several work-arounds in one piece, the complexity and time consumption make you want to reach for one of those other notation programs. (Yes they are complex, but they have all the fundamentals built in. NWC is becoming too complex to work with when you have to play around with a lot of nonsense.)
Some of the work-arounds are way too techincal and involve changing things that I would not dream of touching on a computer for fear that I would do something wrong and not be able to correct it. Not everyone is a computer technician or programmer. Again, I write music.
It seems to me that adding a super and subtitle would be a cinch, but if you want to have these now, you better make them the last thing you do on a file because if you edit your  margins, point size, lyrics or any number of parameters, you will throw off the alignment of the inserted text and have to spend lots of time correcting. Same goes for importing musical fonts etc. It can be done, but there is a big price to pay in the form of time and the results are usually less than ideal.
Now in order to participate in certain discussions, you must upgrade your membership? Give me a break!  Listen, the only virtuosos I know are spending their time practicing, not playing the computer keyboard. I wanted to reply to a post today but it took so long to figure out why there was no reply button that I finally said forget it!
I would like to see less talk and more action. I am sure I am not alone.
Let's get on with it fellas! Thanks for letting me vent. I'm sure I've managed to piss off more than a few folks today. Oh well! I guess it's your turn to be aggrivated. And please, I am aware that my grammar and spelling are not up to the standards of some, (as their music is not up to the standards of others), so please keep your usage, gramatical and spelling comments to yourself.  This is a MUSICAL forum! Thank you.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Tied Notes Around Other Notes
I don't get the reason for entering notes and then removing them and adding them back in, nor do I see why you highlight before hitting the / key.  If you hit the  / key before you enter the note, it will automatically be tied to the next note of the same pitch.
First  hit the / key, then enter the note as well as the note it will be tied to. ( Whether or not it is in the next measure makes no difference). Then add the other untied notes in the chord or chords. Finally add the notes which come in between the tied notes. Unless there is a note in between that is the same pitch as the tied notes of the chord, there is no problem. Somehow this sounds more complicated than it really is!

Tips & Tricks / Re: Making MP3s of NoteWorthy compositions (and audio CDS if you have a burner)
Another way of making CD's out of your  NWC fils is with Musicmatch Jukebox. Open both programs and open the file you want to record. Hit the record button on Musicmatch and then start the file to be recorded. While it is being recorded you can name the file in the recorder window. When done add it to the playlist and record the next file you until you are done.  I find that the best volume level for recording is around 45, but I guess that depends on your sound card.  You may also have to check the proper recording source on your sound cards control panel. The choices are usually something like would be at the back of any stereo component hardware, like: CD player, Aux, line in/out, mic, and for internal recording such as this, Stereo Mix is the source that I use. From there you can create a CD from Musicmatch itself or use Roxio CD creator or whatever program you have.  You will have to move the files to that program from musicmatch if you do it that way.  This is a very simple way to do this and it works very nicely.

Whoa Buddy! No malintent. I guess we're all entitled to our own philosophies on things! I did check out a sampling of stuff on your website. A little whacky but hey, you're 18 and for that you're damn good!l What's up with the odd end note thing? Signature?

General Discussion / Template repeats
In the Rythm Templates of NWC2 there are rythms that repeat 150 times.  Does anyone know how that is done?
It would be nice if one could create repeat rythms and accompaniment tracks to use in midi synthesizers.

Dear Josh,
May I suggest that you let others call you magnificent instead of being self proclaimed? Otherwise you will never really know whether or not you are as good as you think.

General Discussion / Midi File Association
I have run into a problem that I do not know how to correct. I have checked previous forums on the subject, but they are so old that their solutions don't apply because they involve Windows 95 and 98.
When I go to midi files, somehow they have become associated with Real Player instead of NWC, which would not normally be a problem I guess except that my Yamaha keyboard does not recognize them so that if I write something on NWC and transfer to floppy disc, it won't play in the keyboard.
I have re-installed NWC to try and get the associations back but to no avail. I have also tried highlighting a file, right clicking, choosing "Open With" (Choose a program) - NWC, (Checking the "always open this type of file with" box), and still have had no luck. What happens is that the file then is transfered to the midi import wizard and opens that way, but the Real Player icon remains. Any Suggestions? Thanks for your help.
