It is a bit like a crossword puzzle with cryptic clues. I always know that the answers are there, but they elude me a bit. However, the more I try solving them (and the more help I get, thanks again Rick!) the more I learn, and on many occasions I can now find my own answers - and solve the whole cryptic crossword puzzle.
The next thing I need to do is: enter Russian lyrics. Like so (I cannot read Russian, and Google Translate does not help 100 %): по- бед-ных соп-неч-ных пу-чей раэ-даст-ся бпа-го-вест все-мир-ный по-бед-ных сопнец-ных пу-цей по-бед-ных соп-неу-ных пу-цей
They appear neatly in the lyrics editor, but they change into question marks immediately. OK, I will search the forum now ;-)
Hello all, I feel like a newbie these days. This score: http://rdenheijer.nl/nwc/DerWanderer.jpg has common time, but it is at the same time a 12/8 rhythm. That makes it a bit difficult to dot the quarters. [edit] in fact, that is not very hard to get right with hidden time signatures and some hidden rests. [/edit]
Also, I could not find the crossbar of the dotted quarters in the available fonts. Am I overlooking a symbol? best regards, Rob
==================================================== The nwc2stda.ttf font cannot be found on the system.
The font was added to your system during the setup process. It has either been removed, or your system did not accept the new font during the setup process.
You can find this font in the same folder as this program. You can correct this problem by manually installing this font into your system, or by running setup again. ====================================================
This happened to me too when I first installed the upgrade to NWC 2.5.2, and I think the font was not added because I was foolish enough not to close NWC before I did the upgrade. That is why I advised Bert to copy the font to \windows\fonts, and reboot (that seemed the easiest set of instructions.)
That is so odd! I advised one of my "users" to install the new Viewer. And what do you think? He saw a message like "The nwc2stda.ttf font cannot be found on the system."
The solution was simple enough. The error message told him what to do (but it was a bit difficult; the good man is a well-meaning O.A.P.) so I uploaded the font to my own site, mailed him the link and some instructions, and it worked. He can now use the viewer. However, it is strange that installing the viewer should run into problems like this!
The only reason I can think of is: Bert (my user) had a copy of Noteworthy 1.75 open. But I wonder.
The ability to export back to NWC 1.75 will be in NWC 2.5.4, which will be generally available in a few days.
Obviously, much can be lost in the conversion, but perhaps those that need it will find it of some use.
That is very nice, however I have found myself advertising the new Noteworthy viewer! For choir practise, it is indeed very well usable now. That makes me no less thankful for the upcoming 2.5.4 version. It is good to have the option.
It was a bit of a surprise when I opened a .nwctxt file, worked on it, saved... and it was saved as .nwctxt. But a pleasant surprise. Currently I am working on a four score and ten scores (honestly!) and if I decide that something about the layout has to be changed in all files, I can do that using my editor, without having to re-export all (before editing) and saving them all again!
Hello all, I am trying to notate this piece of music. There are two things I cannot (yet) get right: The Rossignol, PDF has barlines between the staves. Also, notes can run across a bar. Leaving the barlines out causes NWC to space the bars out very much. This is how far I got: Rossignol, NWC
I did not find the proper discussion about this yet - did I overlook something? best regards, Rob
The lack of backward compatibility surprised me. Since I have 2 computers here, one with 2.5 and the other with 2.2, I can confirm that exporting to .nwctxt, using the export in 2.2, gives the backward compatibility. You can see that some features are not supported in 2.2, but it is easy to clean up. 2 ticks.
I use Noteworthy mainly for distribution of rehearsal pieces. Some choir members have 1.75, others use a plug-in in their browser, still others have an illegal copy of 1.75. Mac users I simply supply with Midi files. So, rather than taming the whole host of choir members (I don't have a regular choir now: I only sing in projects) I try to export back to 1.75. And that's my only reason.
That is very kind of you. Most problems I can solve by following the suggestions as given by fellow Noteworthians. I am now in the process of entering these fragments; where I run into serious trouble, I will ask for your help. Thanks very much!
For years, I have used Noteworthy as a means to study notes, and to help fellow chorus members to get the notes into their heads. Now I have this daunting task to enter 90 score fragments (1 or 2 systems each) into Noteworthy. All these are going to be incorporated in a book.
I have found the slur-problem annoying, so far, but now it is a real pain. For many of the fragments, fixing the slurs is as much work as entering the whole fragment in Noteworthy. The long standing wish (Do Something About The Slurs!) is something I now wholeheartedly echo.
Solutions have been suggested, and I hope one will be implemented... (An extra property on every note? Yeeeeah!)
I cannot reproduce what I did, but there it is: - I replaced nwc2stda.ttf: the \Windows\Fonts directory had a wrong version of this font - I did at least two reboots
and now it works. I can enter the desired notes as symbols. Not the old "Hey Presto!" feeling but the outcome is good.
I honestly don't get it. If I copy the font to \windows\fonts, and in a Dos-box go to that directory, and type nwc2stda.ttf, I see the characters in that font. But the longa is not there.
<edit>I don't know why but now I see your longa. But now NWC2 stopped working. That is: I see the staff labels (when I open something with staff labels) but no bars or notes. Reinstallation time? </edit>
You made this quite clear, and I cleaned up my act (on that score) "About" now says 2.5.3. OK, I did a computer reboot and restarted NWC 2 (2.5.3). It said "Attempting to re-install the font." Maybe it did, maybe it did not.Anyway, I still see a large oblong in your post of 12:53 (not in the .png of course) Strange, no?
I did the automatic upgrade, from NWC 2. But the font is not there yet, because I see a large oblong. Will investigate, thanks. er? It is there, but with a creation date of 23 dec 2002?
On this computer, yes, Well, it's going anyway, so I might as well speed up that process and jump to the most recent version. -- then again, why not on this one? Done. And the sharp looks, well, sharp.
Thanks - that works, but it does shift the position of the quarter to the right. What I was trying to do is: if you have four quarters like this, say, the distant should be equal. Or almost equal, that is good enough. Playback is, for once, not important. That is why I put the sharp on another staff. Maybe I should simply do this: !NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single) |Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-3 |Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-3 |Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-3 |Text|Text:" #"|Font:StaffItalic|Pos:8 |Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-3 !NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
and be done with it. The # sign is different than the sharp on a note, but that should be OK.
Hello all, I want an F-sharp noted in the old-fashioned way. I tried, but it does not line up nicely. I experimented with eights, but it is not quite what I want. This is what I put together: http://rdenheijer.nl/IbiDaboTibi.nwc so I want the sharp right over the f. Any suggestions please?
Ok... Here is what I do in such cases. I import all Midi files, export them to .nwctxt, and edit those with a text editor. If you have a smart editor, it can save you a lot of time. It needs to be able to do a change through all open files, or else it would still be a lot of work. Then again, the more files you have to convert, the more time you save!
After having changed all .nwctxt files, open them all at once (view them in the Windows explorer and drag them all at once onto NWC; it's a very fast method to do that) and Hey Presto! You are done, at least with this phase.
I use TSE (The Semware Editor) and a macro of my own invention, but any decent text editor will do. YMMV, though.
Well... simply entering the notes and pressing Alt-Backspace as often as you entered a note? Works for me. I do realise that this is not what you asked, but it's fast and reliable. A new staff for trying out has several drawbacks. 1 = You are thrown back to bar 1. 2 = No key signature, unless you enter one. Sounds all a bit cumbersome to me...
It could be that the computer (a laptop) I am trying GPO on, is too simple. Even after a restart I get no results: MidiOX says "there are no MIDI input devices" Noteworthy sees no new available play devices. Must try it on another computer...
Well, just this one then for those who understand Dutch: Een neushoornvogel, een mobiele Bezit een neus met vier ventielen. Daar blaast hij zomaar uit zijn kop het Hoornconcert van Mozart op. "Ik ben," zo spreekt de neushoornvogel "een Wolfgang Amadeushoornvogel."
(A rhino bird, a mobile one, Has a nose with four valves On which he plays, off the top of his head (by heart) Mozart's Horn Concert. "I am," so says the rhino bird, a Wolfgang Amadosebird.)
Kind of, except for the bit that gets lost in translation.
I feel like a complete novice here, and I probably am.
I installed Midi-OX. Now what do I do? Set MIDI Yoke 1 as the output from NWC. In Midi-OX or in NWC? How, please? In Aria I can find Tools>Preferences, but nothing shows there. That is because the previous step is not done yet?
The rest (from "Load the instruments") is quite simple. But a few more hints would be very welcome! Rob den Heijer, Utrecht.
ok... I've started Garritan ARIA Player. Now what do I do to have Noteworthy use GPO? It is, sadly, not quite self-explanatory: In Noteworthy, I still have the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth (left) and Microsoft Midi Mapper (right, under Devices used by play back).
In a 2005 topic, I read "I just picked up GPO a couple of days ago. It works like a charm with NWC.
In NWC: Options --> MIDI tab. Add GPO 1-8 to playback devices. Selcet desired channels.
Open Garritan Personal Studio, not Garritan Personal Orchestra. Click Player 1. Load desired voice. Switch channel to match NWC (it's only labeled with a tiny icon that looks like the end of a MIDI cable). Repeat for other instruments.
Play piece in NWC. Voila! Beautiful instruments!"
but I do not see GPO 1-8. (Vista here.) Any suggestions please?
Boosting it up to 127 does not remedy the situation. My "PrepareForChoir" macro does that for me, so what I heard was the tied note which disappeared all of a sudden! I think that Eric is right. If I switch of either 1st Violins or Oboes, all is well.
It's not really a problem, either... I was just curious. I can still use Noteworthy and this piece for rehearsing purposes. cheers, Rob.
I was rehearsing the tenor part of "St John's Passion", when in bar 84 of "01-Lord.nwc", all of a sudden the tenor voice stops! It's on the Scrypto, here: http://nwc-scriptorium.org/db/bach/jsb_stjohn.zip
There is no channel conflict; muting one or more of the instruments brings back the tenor-sound, but what is going on? Or could it be just this computer (haven't tried to emulate the problem on another computer, yet?)
My brother experiences problems when using ASIO. He, too, or rather his daugher, notes a nagging delay when playing notes on her MIDI-keyboard. Now, ASIO should be able to correct this... only, when tried, we are confronted with a Blue Screen of Death. Are there other options or suggestions? cheers, Rob.
With many HP Laserjet printers, it's a simple matter of "Print on both sides", "Two pages per sheet", "Left binding". The "Left binding" takes care of the correct page numbering. Don't forget!
Alt-Enter works very well for a two-handed approach. I can (on a familiar keyboard) find the left Alt key without looking. My left hand knows where it is. And my right hand finds the Enter key - again, without looking.
For Ctrl-E, I have to twist my wrist a little, or use my (left!) thumb for the Ctrl-key. Not quite as comfortable.
So I recommend Alt-Enter for touch typists, and the right mouse key for occasional users.
And Lawrie: very good of you to mention Ctrl-L. Hadn't thought of that yet.
That's odd. I tried to look up "The Mauldau, From Bohemian Fields and Groves (Smetana)" by browsing by composer, finding Smetana... and I found the Bartered Bride, the Dance of the Comediens and the Bride's Lament. But not the Mauldau. That's why I looked it up in the first place, because the river in question is called "Die Moldau", and I just wondered how it would have landed on the Scrypto. Am I overlooking anything? cheers, Rob.
It's a good thing to have this option. When I enter notes, I love to have it on. It allows me to copy notes from a score without looking at the screen or keyboard. The sound tells me if I have entered the right note. But hey, it can be turned off...
I remember all the hard work she did: she submitted many a composition to the Newsgroup, where eager Eagle Ears could help her to finalise the work. The most notable time was when she had trouble with "moving clefs" in a piece by Dvorák. I said "Play bars so-and-so. Sounds right, right? Now, insert a bass clef in the same bars. Play them again. Now it's Dvorák!" or words to the effect. She was extatic and said things like "What would I do without you?" It is now, sadly, time to think "Where are we now, without Tina?"
And, when the Eagle Ears Brigade pointed out some errors in works Tina submitted, those errors were, as often as not, *not* Tina's fault. One of her (my!) favourite answers was: "Must have been a misprint." She trusted the Eagle Ears and her own judgment more than the eyes of the editors. I will remember Tina for the benefit of the doubt she so often granted me.
Hear hear! I am no composer, and do not know many composers. I do know conductors who arrange music for their own choir(s), but most of the Noteworthy-users that I know of use Noteworthy as a rehearsal tool. (I do too, but not uniquely for that purpose.)
Sigh... give us a viewer that is good for rehearsing, please. I now resort to different solutions that I would rather not discuss, except for the fact that my method has moved a few friends into buying Noteworthy.
