General Discussion / Re: wangchung
G'day wangchung,

does anyone know of a way to separate beaming in between staffs in a score? meaning when you go to staff properties and then style and you say orchestral making it so that it doesnt connect with the staff on top, only on the bottom or vice versa. thanks

If you do a search of the forum I seem to recall there are a couple of discussions that touch on this, but from memory there are a couple of methods that can help.  These techniques will not stop the initial connected barline (the one at the very start of the systems, before your clefs etc.) and the second will result in small gaps in it.

1) In those sections where you want a break use upper and lower grand staff.  Upper grand only has the barlines reaching downwards while lower only has them going up.  Any staves between them, even when set to orchestral will not join the barlines.  To overcome this you can use layered staves set to orchestral containing hidden whole rests and visible barlines.

2) use an empty staff set to a highligh colour that is configured to white as a separator.  Adjust the number of staff lines towhatever suits, perhaps 1 and adjust the upper and lower size to suit.  This will result in a gap the width of the upper and lower size settings in the initial barline.

G'day Duncan,
I'm 14 hrs ahead of you, so it wasn't that late, only about 7PM local time.

I'm glad you liked the "rough"...  Hopefully the band can do it justice for you.

Blessya mate,

General Discussion / *ping* Duncan - RE: O Sacred Head Now Wounded
G'day Duncan,
had a bit of a jam with a couple of guys last night and trotted out "O Sacred Head Now Wounded".

Mike on Drums, me playing melody on Flugel (and Trom for the second go at it), Nick coasting along on Guitar (by ear, doesn't read music and I haven't worked out the chords yet) and the NWC file playing (the Yamaha is such a lovely synth) on the PC.

Was very nice - went down quite well.

I've spoken to our musical director and we will have a squizz at it on Tuesday night.

General Discussion / Re: How to crescendo on one note
G'day Warren,
very nice!

A suggestion, when you look at the print preview, there are several locations where slurs cross either other slurs or beams from the staff above or below.  Adjusting the slur direction in the note properties would improve this.

Just a little niggle really, depends on whether you want to listen to (quite lovely) or read (some improvement available) it.

Thanks for sharing.

General Discussion / Re: Timing or Mathmatical Problem
G'day Duncan,
I take your point but when trying to reproduce a score it can be nice to be as close as possible to the composers notation.  So...

How about moving the rest up higher than the staff, and then using some "digital white-out" to cover it.  Highlight 7 is White, font User5 is WingDings 24pt (my staff size is 16pt)

General Discussion / O Sacred Head Now Wounded
G'day Duncan,
man, that's a lovely piece.  Would you permit it to be performed?

I'd have to approach our musical director of course but I think it would be well received as an item.

General Discussion / Re: Staff Properties
G'day Lars,

NWC 1.75b  Curious ... Is there a way to eliminate the orchestral/standard connection between staves?
I've written a solo piece that encompasses 4 staves, and when printing, they are all tied together, which is not the way I would like it to appear in print.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Umm, confusion reigns - not really :)

As a solo piece, why have you used 4 staves?  Is this a multi manual organ piece?  If so surely you would want the staves connected.

If it isn't then I think you may have made an error in usage.  The "voice" should continue on a single staff until its conclusion (this is in the edit screen).  When you "print|preview" or print it, it will wrap to the page.  The wrapping is controllable to an extent by adjusting staff sizes, margins, whether a barline is a "system break" etc.

Hope I haven't misinterpreted your question.

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
G'day fitzclan,

I don't understand how to use the attach function. Can someone explain it with a little more clarity than the help file?

When creating a message, click the "Additional Options..." link to the bottom left of the edit window.

It will open up to give you tick boxes for:

  • Return to this topic.
  • Don't use smileys. (seems redundant as we don't have 'em anyway)

AND an editable field with a browse button for including attachments.

I don't believe the particular construct you're trying is possible in NWC without layering...

Tips & Tricks / Re: Multi-bar rests - easier and improved spacing printing
G'day Bob,

Where can I find these fonts you speak of?

If you have joined the NG then there are links there to the beta releases.  Otherwise, I expect to be publishing via the scripto within the next 2 weeks.  I have just a little tidying up to do on the Euro font and beta5 will be available.  I'm pretty sure beta5 will be the release version.

I have deliberately kept distribution small for the moment 'cos the character mappings have been fairly volatile.  That has settled now and the only real delay is that I'm on a big project for one of my customers and have very little time to work on the fonts at the moment.

Given the rise in interest I'm very keen to get the release version "out there" so I'll be trying to minimise the delay as much as I can.

General Discussion / Re: Unjazz my MIDI
G'day Wilm,

Hmm, thanks, but I'm not sure. I've been messing around with my signature (added a link to a photo), but I'm not seeing it myself. Does this post have a signature? What do you see?

I see a quite sharp photo of yourself against an indeterminate but colourful background.

BTW I'm really pleased to see SwingDings getting a guernsey (Aussie slang for being put forward or having an opportunity to appear etc.)  Thankyou.  Of course now I'll have to hurry up and publish to the Scripto.  Not quite ready yet but Real Soon Now.  NG denizens have access to the beta links...  Thankyou Wilm!

General Discussion / Re: Unjazz my MIDI
G'day Wilm,

However, there are dotted eights that are not in any pair, and they will have to remain dotted. So, still a lot of selecting and GlobalMod to do in that case.

While Eric has made this redundant (Thanks Eric for the new tool) the "Opts.Beam==First/End" part of the selection section causes this Global_Mod expression to ignore unbeamed notes.

PS I like your signature photo
3116
General Discussion / Re: Unjazz my MIDI
G'day Wilm,
You can do this in 2 passes with Global_Mod

Assuming they are all beamed pairs as in your example.
First pass:
Note,Dur.8th,Dur.Dotted,Opts.Beam==First Dur=8th

Second Pass:
Note,Dur.16th,Opts.Beam==End Dur=8th

If you have some that are not beamed then you can remove the "Opts.Beam==xxx" part but beware that it could change bits you don't want changed.  I would make selections and run the tool over each selection in turn.

G'day Debo,
mate, I was most amused.  'Tis a shame Polmila isn't familiar enough with MIDI to pick up on it and enjoy the humour - I reckon it was great fun!  Channel 62 indeed - wish I was quick enough to spot things like that.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Multi-bar rests - easier and improved spacing printing
Hi, Lawrie.

Before I get into the gist of this message, let me publicly thank you for the new user fonts.

Aw, shucks :)

Quote
I didn't identify you before as the author because I wasn't sure you were ready to be announced.

I don't mind being identified.  As the fonts are currently only available on a restricted basis untill I can consider 'em pretty much finalised it is a little difficult to share work that includes them.  Provided I'm travelling with a "following wind" they should be ready for general publication within a couple of weeks.  I actually would have them out there already except a request for some specific European characters in SwingText came in and that is the delay.

Quote
Now, the multibar rest itself - I hadn't realized the number would position itself so well within the single text string.  That looks really nice.  I see that your overspill feature allows a few blank spaces within the text string allows it to stretch out a bit, within limits. I interpreted the overspill as allowing an overlap with other text entries, not within the one entry, so that's something good to learn.  If you have one more character, a horizontal line equal in thickness and vertical position to the ; and : symbols, but without the end serifs, the MBR could be stretched to any length desired.  This would be similar to the Alt-0207 symbol, but just a little lower.  However, this is a "nice to have," not an essential need.

Great minds and all that.  I have created an updated version already that includes exactly that character - mapped to the hyphen.  It was done about 10 hours ago but is not yet posted.  I'll put it up in the usual place when I get back from church this morning.

I owe you about a thousand thanks, I figure...

Now you're making me [glow=red,2,300]blush[/glow] - please don't stop, I like it... :)

General Discussion / Re: harmony/chords used in brass section GM 62
Debo,
tsk tsk
:)

Polmila, I stand to be corrected but AFAIK there are no "automagic" harmonies in the brass section.  While it is possible that some soundfonts may use an octave shift to add fullness with some of the combined sounds I do not know if this is actually done.

If you score an F, you get an F.  No triads, no octaves, no sixths, no minor (or major) 3rds, no fifths, just an F that should sound as if several horns are playing it together.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Multi-bar rests - easier and improved spacing printing
G'day David,
I'm VERY pleased to see you using my fonts  :)

Perhaps you could try this version of your clip - same effect, couple of slightly different characters and it is much easier to input.  The multibar rest characters are:
":4;  " (No quotes and there's 2 spaces after the semi-colon) left justified with "preserve width" turned on.  I found it seemed to look better in preview on my system.

General Discussion / Re: Rhythm
G'day Eric,
Hey.
Just wondering if there is a way to have 3 notes played in the same time as a half note.

Like I would have a half note playing, and then have 3 equal notes play during that. Kinda weird, just tell me if you don't understand.

Yup, that's easy.  2 Quarter notes (Crotchets) equal a half note (minim).  3 crotchets in a triplet also equal a minim.  So insert your 3 crotchets where you want 'em, highlight 'em and press <Ctrl-T>.

Instrument Trees / Re: General Midi.nwcitree
G'day Adam,
That may be the recommended, but it also makes it absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to find the timpanium. The Timpanium isn't anywhere near where anyone would look.

That's a fair call which is why the NWCitree facility is so good.  You can create your own itree and put any instrument into any grouping you want.  Of course the only thing you can't modify is the instrument number itself as that is defined in the general MIDI specification, not in NWC.

General Discussion / Re: A Sound Problem
G'day klakster,

A little over my head though I appreciate your advice and will follow up.  I have a nice HP with Legacy Audio Drivers and SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio.  Is this OK?  I have a laptop so it would be difficult to get another audio card in there.
How do I make the connection from the coputer to the MIDI interfaces on the keyboard?
Thanks again.

SoundMAX is OK, but IIRC does not support soundfonts.  As a result, either a new sound card OR a softsynth is the answer for PC based sound.

Do the search on this forum that I suggested previously.  You will definitely benefit...  Particularly in regard to softsynth availability.

Josh's suggestion re Synthfont is really only beneficial if you export to MIDI first (for the reasons I gave above).  I personally find this a "step too many" for simple playback from NWC.

As far as connecting your PC and/or notebook to your MIDI keyboard:  there are also several informative threads on this forum on this topic.  However to make a short synopsis, you need a MIDI interface on your PC.  Couple of ways to get this:
  • Many sound cards allow you to use the game port for MIDI data transfer - you need a special cable to make this work AND your sound card must support it - functional but perhaps not the best answer these days.
  • It is now possible to buy USB to MIDI converters - the drivers for these devices will give you a MIDI port to connect to and the cable will connect to your MIDI keyboard.

You also asked about connecting your amp and speakers up.
  • You need a cable with 3.5mm stereo phono plug to plug into the "line out" of your sound card
  • The other end of the cable needs to have (a) connector(s) appropriate to your amp - commonly a pair of RCA connectors 1 for the left channel and 1 for the right channel
  • Connect your speakers to the amp as usual.
  • If you want to get really fancy, you might like to connect a decent EQ and/or perhaps some other signal processors in between but that's up to you

I say again though, do search this forum.

General Discussion / Re: A Sound Problem
G'day klakster,
if you do a search of the forum for things like "soundfont" and "softsynth" you will find a lot of information relating to just this issue:  Better, more realistic sound from MIDI's.

The essence of the problem is that the sounds produced by you sound card from a MIDI source are generated by a synthesiser.  The synth uses samples to generate the sounds from.  The better the sample set the better the sound.

Cheap sound cards usually have poor sample sets.

Josh's suggestion re: Synthfont is a good one, especially as this product is supposed to be able to be "connected" to your MIDI software with "soft cables" like MIDI Yoke.  My own experience with this is that the current version is broken.  It will play MIDIs fine, just the MIDI through feature is not working at the moment.  I believe it used to so something has broken in an update.

Another option is to use a sound card that uses sound fonts.  The current Creative range is a good example.  The SoundBlaster Live is a relatively cheap product that does this fairly well.  All the Audigy range is also good.

You could also seek out a Softsynth.  I have an Audigy II that uses soundfonts and I even have some good ones, but my synth of choice is the Yamaha S-YXG50 softsynth - It is quite excellent IMHO.

Of course, to get really good, professional quality sounds it is almost essential to post process an exported MIDI with a MIDI sequencer that can give you more direct control over the MIDI commands than NWC can, but this is gettin' quite serious by now.

For myself, the occasional mp3 I need to create comes direct from NWC via the Yamaha and into Audacity to be saved appropriately.  I don't bother with any post processing at all.  Rather I try to get it as good as I can in NWC first.

3125
General Discussion / Re: A Bit of Fun
You could export to MIDI from NWC 2 and import back into NWC1 but it would probably be quicker to just rekey it since MIDI doesn't understand repeats...
3126
General Discussion / Re: Stuck grace notes + fermata
G'day Carlsson,
the phenomena you report is known in a general sort of way...

What's actually happening is that the NWC implementation of a grace note is not "according to the rules".

An appoggiatura (grace note without a slash across its stem) should steal time from the following note according to some fairly complex rules depending on whether the note is dotted or not.  Without going too far into that suffice to say that it (they) should steal around 50% of the following notes duration.

In NWC, a grace note is fixed at a 32nd note (demisemiquaver) duration.  Thus if you have enough grace notes to add up to a duration longer than the note they precede then you will get the phenomenon of some grace notes playing after the principle note.

As far as the fermata is concerned, it has its effect when the note it is attached to is played.  Thus if your principle note plays when, say, the second grace note plays then you have a 2 note chord that is paused.  Fermata duration concludes and the rest of the grace notes play.

Your examples show this.

General Discussion / Re: Transposing treble to alto
G'day Eric,
the thing to remember is that the alto clef is also known as a "C" clef, and the "C" clef works like this, the line that is centred in the "wings" of the clef is middle "C".  THat's all there is to it.  So, for the alto clef, the middle line of the staff is middle "C".

This is why it looks much the same as the tenor clef which is also a "C" clef, just pointing to a different line.

Now, we know that the first ledger line below the staff is middle "C" on the treble clef, so there are only 2 things you need to do to go from concert pitch treble to concert pitch alto:

  • Select the entire staff and <Ctrl-Shift-Up> 6 times to move the notes to the right location on the staff.
  • Change the clef symbol from treble to alto to get the playback and the key signatures correct.

General Discussion / Personal Messages
G'day everyone,
it has dawned on me that perhaps not everyone has their personal messages notification turned on...

I have sent several PM's lately that have not as yet been responded to.  Two were quite recent and the recipients may not have been on since they were sent, but at least 1 was sent to a user that has posted several times since...  Of course this assumes that they might actually want to respond to me :)

Might I suggest that users check their profiles and turn on PM notification, assuming of course that you would like to receive personal messages!

Go to | Profile | Personal Message Options | Check "Show a popup..." |

It may be necessary to turn off your pop-up stopper for *.noteworthysoftware.com in order for this to work.

Otherwise, it mightn't hurt to make it a practice to check your PM's when you log on.

I quote from K.A.T. in another thread:

I would have thanked you sooner, but the little "new" icon wasn't showing; I thought no one had answered...)

Has anyone else experienced this?

Tips & Tricks / Re: Making MP3s of NoteWorthy compositions (and audio CDS if you have a burner)
G'day Richard,
hmm.  If I wanted to be a pedant, I would say that you set the sound fonts up in your sound card's software and then you select the banks and instruments thus provided in NWC...  But only if I wanted to be a pedant  :)

Actually, I take your point.  I did simplify a bit more than reasonable.

To those wanting clarification, if you read Richards comments in the message prior to this one he gives a concise overview of what is required within NWC.

In order to make those selections available your synth must support the sound(s) you want.  This is where the soundfont comes in.  Assuming you have a soundcard that supports soundfonts then you load the fonts you require.  If you have a softsynth capable of using soundfonts or vst modules you load them there instead.  I cannot give you much guidence there as each card/softsynth will have its own tools...  (and I haven't explored vst modules and synths that support them much yet anyway.  That's a project for another day).

General Discussion / Re: Chord Transposer
G'day Dag,
I've downloaded and had a quick look at your neat little utility.  Looks good to me.  Though I personally don't normally use a lyric line for my chords I recognise how useful that method is.

Given that the program is not NWC dependent I can see other uses for myself, so I thank you for the effort and I'm sure there are more than me who will find it useful.

General Discussion / Re: URGENT HELP ABOUT Noteworthy
Hi, I need urgent help about Noteworthy Composer and Sibelius. I have had no problem with them since today. Their volume level is zero now and I can’t find the reason. I uninstalled and installed them again but the problem persists. I also checked the control panel. Can you please help?

I would check to make sure that MIDI (and master volume) is not turned down or muted.  Check the volume control/mixer.

As a test, do you get normal system sounds and can you play MIDIs in another product, say Van Basco's Karoke player?

Do you have powered speakers, is the power on to them?  Can you test with headphones perhaps?

As both NWC and Sibelius are having problems it is extremely unlikely to be a problem with those products.  I suggest you look elswhere in your system.

General Discussion / Re: Staves cutting out
G'day unecosanostra,
if you have a Creative card try the latest drivers from their website.  I had what sounded like the same problem and the driver update fixed it.  (My card is from the Audigy range)

Another test you might try, if you have WinXP or one of the (I think) DirectX updates then you should have an MS softsynth.  Try it and see if you still get the cutouts.

General Discussion / Re: Making a hymnal
G'day Ryan,
if you're working from Windows XP, the printer drivers usually have the ability to put multple pages on one sheet...

|Start|Settings|Printers and Faxes|  Right click the required printer, printing preferences and go hunting.  E.G. my Kyocera has the option under "Layout" as Pages per Sheet, while my HP 6110 "all in one" has it under "Features", again as "Pages per Sheet".

Or from within NWC, |File|Print| Properties button, select the appropriate tab in the next dialogue etc..

Otherwise there are other ways.  Some of the others have found useful tools for other OS's.  A search of this forum will find something I'm sure.

General Discussion / Re: grace notes and duration
G'day manning,
Thanks so much. I'll try your suggestion. But I was also asking how grace notes should sound, which may be more a musical than a technical question. The scores I've seen don't appear to include directions on, for example, whether a grace note should "steal" from preceding or following notes or rests.

Depends if the grace note is an appoggiatura or an acciaccatura...

The appoggiatura "steals" time from the following note - this is what the standard NWC grace note basically is though the NWC one is always the same length where in reality it steals a specific amount of time from the note it preceeds.

The acciaccatura or "crushed note" is often considered to steal time from the preceeding note, but this is not actually correct AFAIK.  All my references say that this form is played simultaneously with the note it is attached to but immediately released, hence the "crushed" appelation.  This is the one that has the slash scross the stem.

General Discussion / Re: grace notes and duration
G'day manning120,
there is a reasonably easy way to do it.

For those staves that need to have grace notes working differently, just create a 2nd, hidden, sounding staff and mute the visible one.

There are plenty of instructions on this forum to do it but briefly:
  • For the visible staff, make it look right then hit the mute button (while the staff is highlighted)
  • For the audible staff, make it sound right, then in staff properties, create a group called "hidden" or something equally meaningful (just type into the pull down list box) and make this staff a member of the hidden group
  • In page setup remove the 'X' from the hidden group and the staff won't display, but you'll still hear it.
Hope this helps enough...

General Discussion / Re: How to put two words at one note?
G'day Geertjan,
'tis not hard, just join 'em with an underscore:
Like_this
The lyric editor treats an underscore as a space and doesn't print it.  If there were spaces between the words and the underscore:
like _ this then 2 words would take 3 notes.

"Ectualy" Rich, I wouldn't mind knowing the hack myself.  I regularly have to do registry hacks, doesn't hurt to know another one.

Hmm, we haven't experienced that kind of thing with any of our customers - at least not caused by a service pack...

I wonder if he has some specific, "uncertified", device driver that has compatibility problems.  This would be one of the biggest software causes of unreliable behaviour out there.

Another possibility is hardware.  It may be a coincidental situation where there is a hardware problem that is affecting reliability.  Something we've seen a LOT of is swollen or burst electrolytic capacitors around the CPU on the motherboard.  About 2 1/2 years ago several (maybe 1) capacitor manufacturer(s) seems to have started cutting corners on quality.  These faulty caps cause the wierdest problems... AND they appear on boards from a variety of manufacturers...

However, my son thinks SP2 has more problems than XP on its own - but since I never used XP on its own, I can't really comment.

I understand why he might think that, both SP1 and SP2 introduced performance hits, but overall the reliability and security improved to a point that SP2 is almost a good product, though I don't believe that any M$ product will ever be truly secure (or anyone else's product for that matter, the only truly secure computer is one that has no data, no connection to anything, is turned off and stored in a fireproof safe)
