General Discussion / Re: M-Audio Keystation 49e Issues
G'day again bugman,
I'm around on and off for about the next 28 hours or so.  After that you won't get me for a couple of weeks...  So go for the big "ask" and tell me how you get on.

Maybe the boss will be helpful, hey, he might even be interested - he's not a muso is he?

General Discussion / Re: M-Audio Keystation 49e Issues
Hey bugman,
I'm back again for a short while...

You didn't say if anything appears in the Record tab of NWC...

Midi Mapper is what you get when you set a default MIDI synth in control panel... Whatever you set there is what Midi Mapper maps your output to if you don't specify another synth.

In NWC you ALWAYS have to specify the output synth, including if you want to use the Midi Mapped one.

If you have uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing I'd be beginning to suspect a faulty device about now.  Can you try it on another PC?

General Discussion / Re: M-Audio Keystation 49e Issues
G'day Milton,
are you sure it won't show?  I don't have any experience with input only MIDI ports...  All the MIDI ports I've used, whether the attached device was input only (like my creative "BlasterKeys") or not would still show up as both an input and an output port because the port itself was both.

thebugman, I'd be really interested if, when you check both the MIDI and the Record tabs in NWC, you do see the device in the Record tab and not the MIDI tab.  That said, I have several more devices available in my MIDI tab than in my Record tab as NWC shows both MIDI IO ports and synths (both hardware and software) in the MIDI tab and only MIDI IO ports in the record tab.

BTW, you must have at least one working device in your MIDI tab or you wouldn't be able to play anything back in NWC...

Thebugman, your Keystation 49 is not a playback device since it has no MIDI sound module, that is, no synth.  It is an input device only, intended to control or trigger a softsynth or hardware synth...

General Discussion / Re: M-Audio Keystation 49e Issues
OK, lets delve a bit deeper...
If you open your control panel "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet and select the "Audio" tab you'll see 3 areas on the window.

The bottom one is for MIDI music playback where you have an opportunity to select a default device.

Is the "USB Audio Device" listed as an available option? (Actually I don't think it will be or you'd have it available to NWC as well)

If it isn't there try unplugging the device and then plugging it back in.  (with Windows running, USB devices SHOULD be inserted and removed while Windows is active or it won't always recognise they're presence.  E.G. I have an Edirol UM-1 USB to MIDI device that WILL NOT activate unless I plug it in AFTER starting Windows, Ditto the USB flash drive that lives in one port on my PC)

Another test you can try is to open device mangler.. err device manager... and stretch the window vertically so you can see everything with all categorys closed up EXCEPT "Sound Video and Game Controllers".  You should be able to see the "USB Audio Device" appear and disappear as you unplug and then replug it.

If that doesn't work, I'd uninstall the software, including the driver that came with the keyboard and start again.  I'm almost certain that it hasn't installed correctly.

Of course, it could always be faulty...

Hi Lawrie... Thanks for the quick reply!

1. No... The keyboard doesn't seem to want to work with ANY application. I've left voicenail with M-Audio support on it too.
2. N/A... See number 1.
3. The device is appearing in the device manager.
4. It's listed as "USB Audio Device"... Which is what the manual told e to expect.
5/6/7. NWC (And the bundled program) BOTH list no MIDI devices.
3055
General Discussion / Re: M-Audio Keystation 49e Issues
G'day thebugman,
while I'm not familiar with this device I may still be able to help.

  • Firstly, does the keyboard work with the bundled application?
  • If so can you check the configuration of the software and see what MIDI device is being referenced?
  • If not then the USB to MIDI driver probably hasn't installed properly
  • Remember that the MIDI device listed will almost certainly not reflect the name of the keyboard
  • Are there any new MIDI devices listed?
  • More importantly perhaps, are there ANY MIDI devices listed?
  • Have you tried all the MIDI devices presented to you in NWC?

Hope that helps to chase down the problem.

General Discussion / SwingDings update for NWC2
G'day all,
as a result of the work that Noteworthy have done with the latest beta of version 2, I have released a new update of SwingDings.

Its primary purpose is to allow the SwingDings NWC2 system font and the original NWC2 system font to co-exist.  there are also some very minor glyph updates, the main one being a prettier 0 (zero)

It is available from the same link on the Scripto as the previous version:
http://nwc-scriptorium.org/helpful.html#Fonts

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
G'day all,
OK.  for those playing with my fonts I've got some new versions and some instructions for y'all.

[glow=red,2,300]IF[/glow] you have already replaced your NWC2STDA with one of my versions then:
  • Open your \Windows\Fonts* folder and delete the NWC2STDA font.
  • Open your \Program Files\Noteworthy Composer 2 folder and copy NWC2STDA.TTF to your \Windows\Fonts* folder

[glow=orange,2,300]IF[/glow] you have already installed one of my recent test versions (NWC2SD or NWC2MDS) then:
  • Open your \Windows\Fonts* folder and delete them

[glow=green,2,300]NOW,[/glow] To use the new versions of my fonts that are designed to work with the new NWC2:
  • Download: http ://zoundz.pardyline.com.au/SupportFiles/Fonts/beta1a-NWC2MusikDingsSans-V1.ttf
  • Download: http ://zoundz.pardyline.com.au/SupportFiles/Fonts/NWC2SwingDings-V1a.ttf
  • Copy the downloaded files to your \Windows\Fonts* folder
  • They will up show as NWC2SwingDings and NWC2MusikDingsSans

*** N.B. the above versions of these fonts are now offline and have been replaced with updates that are available in the zip files of the complete suites***

* - If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows NT this will likely be \WINNT\Fonts

Please Note - it is ALWAYS a very good idea to make "preservation" copies of any file you plan to delete "just in case".  I suggest you do so.

Please advise me of any difficulties you may have in relation to this exercise.  Note that my availability is limited to the next 2 evenings (Australian Eastern Standard Time).  Otherwise you'll have to wait 2 weeks as I will have NO internet access for that period.

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
[glow=red,2,300]You bewdy! [/glow]  Thanks Eric.

Only trouble is; I'm working flat out at the moment preparing for my holidays, and I won't have any net access while I'm away, for 2 weeks!  :(

A very quick look is most encouraging.

Rich, I haven't time this morning to look at what you're seeing.  Hopefully tonight when I get back... in about 12 or 14 hours :(

Instrument Trees / Re: Yamaha XG Tree
G'day Fitzclan,
installing it is easy, just copy it into the:
"c:\programs files\noteworthy composer 2\itrees"
folder (I think that's the corrsct path, I'm not at my PC at the moment).  Then you can access it as described above.

General Discussion / Re: Triplet notation in imported MIDI
G'day Andrew,
not in NWC1, however, NWC2 is a different story...

NWC2 has a "user tools" facility and there is a user tool for just this task.  It isn't quite perfect, but it goes a loooong way to reducing the problem.
3064
General Discussion / Re: Auditing accidentals
G'dy Andrew,
if you perform a |Tools|Force Accidentals| first, apply the new key signature and then
  • audit accidentals
  • audit enharmonics

ya get what ya lookin' for.

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
NWC2 Beta 2 includes an experimental mechanism for temporarily changing the notation typeface for a work.

Thankyou Noteworthy Online!

I have now uploaded modified versions of 2 NWC2 system font replacements.

These fonts are now offline - please see "Reply 13" below for access to current versions

The first is:

http: //zoundz.pardyline.com.au/SupportFiles/Fonts/NWC2STDSwingDings-V1a.ttf

and has an internal name of NWC2SD so the command to use it is:
<Alt-Z>
ChangeFileTypeface: NWC2SD
<Enter>

This font is the same as my original SwingDings replacement for NWC2STDA except that it has a different internal name AND I finally got round to fixing that ugly 0 (zero)

The second font is:

http: //zoundz.pardyline.com.au/SupportFiles/Fonts/beta1-NWC2STDMusikDingsSans-V1.ttf

This is an experminental Sans Serif based font from a suite called MusikDingsSans that I've been working on for a little while.  It draws from a font called FreeSans and has the required glyphs for NWC2 in a similar form.

It's internal name is NWC2MDS so the command to use it is:
<Alt-Z>
ChangeFileTypeface: NWC2MDS
<Enter>

To install these fonts simply copy them into your Windows/Fonts folder.  If there are later updates it will be necessary to first delete these ones before installing the new versions.

Please let us know what you think.

General Discussion / Re: Hungarian boxes
G'day Stephen,
I wonder if you could draw me some examples and post a tif or jpg of it?

Also if you could include all the sharps and flats that you might need - I'm aware that there are far more of these than used by most western music...

Would this font also need more normal characters - a to z, A to Z, / ? _ - = + &etc. or could it be a specialist font like Boxmarks (which can almost do it now, it just dosen't have the separate V and I or the ability to remove either the top or the bottom of the box)?

The reason I ask is that I have a couple of fonts that are almost there from your description but which would need tweaking and possibly the extra sharps and flats.

Another thing is would you prefer:
a) a handwritten style like my SwingDings font (see http://nwc-scriptorium.org/helpful.html#Fonts and select the SwingDings link),
b) a sans serif font like Arial, or
c) a serif font like Times New Roman

I can't guarantee a time frame - business is picking up and I'm quite busy, plus I'll be going on hoilidays soon...

General Discussion / Re: playing music copied onto disc
G'day Rik,
I backed my music files onto a cd and when i try to open it up i recieve a message stating that this music was notated on an older version  of nwc and are not playable. I have been on ver 2 for more than a year.??? help!

I confess I'm not sure what is causing this but I was under the impression that NWC would always open files from older versions...

Perhaps you could post one of the offending files as an attachment and we'll see if others are having the same problem.

If the works are such that they shouldn't be made public because of copyright restrictions etc. you could always PM me with one as an attachment instead...

Instrument Trees / Re: Yamaha XG Tree
G'day Arrow,
sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you - had another little project on and didn't want to get too diverted...

Just downloaded your XG itree - Thanks.  Much better layout than mine.  I will be including it into my default itree.

General Discussion / Re: How do you create a bird's eye wirh NWC2
G'day Tony,
for fermata's placement should be centred at next note/bar - highlight the fermata, <alt-Enter> to access the properties, "expression Placement" tab, Justification = center and Alignment/Placement = At Next note/bar.

The same process will work for any placeable element other than notes, clefs, key signatures, special endings and barlines (think I got 'em all) thus you can manage your pedal symbols in the same way.

General Discussion / Re: MIDI recording bug
G'day Eric,
just discovered something...

I checked out the "buffer" method and it works OK.  Interestingly, when I attempt to import into a new staff in the "record" group it fails BUT I can then import that recording from the buffer...

Hope this is helpful.

General Discussion / Re: Instrument trees other than MIDI
G'day indytrog,

OK I'm new I admit it! I know that for 40 bucks I can't expect Finale or Sibellius and I don't But let's admit it most MIDI voices suck! I mean is that really supposed to be a violin?I am wondering if NWC2 or 1.75 for that matter allows the importation of sample .wav files or similar to achieve actual voices for instruments?

The problem you have is not with NWC, or Sibelius or Finale or any other notation package for that matter.  The real problem is your MIDI synth.

If your synth has poor samples in its wave table then you need to change the wave table, OR change the synth.

There are PLENTY of threads on this forum relating to just this problem and a quick search will find 'em.  However, in order to save you some time, I'll list a few effective options.  Note that this list is not definitive:
  • Soundfonts - if your sound card supports soundfonts like the Creative Sound Blaster range then there are literally thousands of sounds out there for you to choose from - <insert favourite search engine here> is your friend!  "Hammersound" would be one of the best - http://www.hammersound.net/
  • Synthfont is a software synth that uses soundfonts - see point above
  • The Microsoft synth included with Windows XP (and some other versions IIRC - may have been with DirectX) uses a Roland wave table that isn't too awful
  • There used to be a Yamaha softsynth available, the S-YXG50.  If you are able to locate this softsynth you won't be disappointed.  It is quite good.

Then you get to start looking at VST stuff - a whole new subject I haven't really researched yet, and may not for some time, I like my Yamaha.

After that you probably have to start looking at professional level software and hardware - hope you've got a fat wallet.

Tips & Tricks / Re: A note for jazzy songs
G'day Yoshikazu,
I agree, much thanks are due to Robert A.  He has provided many useful fonts and insights to this forum.  My personal favourite is "FretQuik".

Now, at the risk of sounding like I'm blowing my own trumpet (trombone actually  :)  I'd like to draw attention to the font suite I've recently released called "SwingDings".

Available via the scripto: http://nwc-scriptorium.org/helpful.html#Fonts (Robert also has several fonts available from the scripto on the same page)

It has the 'two eighths equal to the triplet of a quarter and an eighth' in brackets at chr <alt 0161> AND 'two eighths & dotted eighth plus sixteenth equal to the triplet of a quarter and an eighth' in brackets at chr <alt 0181>

There is also a whole bunch of other things in the suite which is designed to make jazz/swing charts look more "realistic".   More info is available on the scripto.

General Discussion / MIDI recording bug
G'day all, I think I may have found a bug in NWC2 Beta 1 Update 2.

When recording from a MIDI keyboard I've found that I can record to a new window just fine, but I cannot record to the "Record" group in the current window.

Now I thought it could have been an error on my part as I don't do this much.  In fact I just bought a new Edirol USB to MIDI adapter and was trying it out.  So I reverted to NWC1 which I had complete success with so my problem is NWC2 specific.

I can echo MIDI input to any play device I have configured in NWC2 so the software is receiving the MIDI input, just not putting it into the new staff.

I'm not sure what "buffer only" does and so cannot report on this.

Is it just me or are others finding similar results?

General Discussion / Re: Slur oddity
G'day Adam,

Hmm. If it's going to result in different slur forms, it'd be useful to give us control of it.

I have a feeling it's one of those little unexpected things often seem to crop up when you write code.  While this quirk may give us some control when notating "split" chords, it won't be helpful for single note to single note...

I'd rather see an additional parameter in the note properties that allows us to define, in addition to slur upwards or downwards, slur from/to notehead or stem and partway up stem...

Wow! Your life sounds a lot like mine.  Nothing  goes as planned. I used to get all bent out of shape over the like, but it never made anything better, so...! Sounds like you have a fine group. Whenever you get to it will be more than fine.

I'm trying to improve on that...  Plans MUST go ahead... <mumble, mumble> ...best laid plans of mice and men... <grumble, mumble>  :)

Yeah, they're a good a bunch and love the Lord heaps!

By the way, I heard you talking to someone about the french horn, and you were saying that the available horn synths or sound fonts ( I don't know the difference), were not so good. I think that one of the problems with them is that they don't come across so well on the pc as they do on a keyboard synthesizer simply because on the keyboard, you have built in dynamics that are hard to reproduce when notationg for playback by a computer. What is written is for the performer to interpret. As you know, every performer will have his own style and interpretaiton of any piece. The same synth or sound-font that is used on say a Yamaha pc sound card is probably used on their synthesizer, but the difference is in the performance.

My biggest complaint is that, aside from the obvious efforts involved in getting dynamics etc. correct the vast majority of brass patches I've had access just don't have the right sound.  You know, timbre, attack etc..  It's really a function of the original samples and how they've been processed, the looping etc..  That said, the Yamaha French Horn patch is very good, best horn I've heard.  But the rest of the brass is lacking in various degrees.  This is, of course, purely subjective... :)

Quote
I have written a piece called "Thank You Jesus", (lyrics by one of our teens), with horns in it. I (not being a horn player), would probably not know on hearing it that it is not a real horn.

I would send it to you but I don't know how! (Not the most computer literate). It is in mp3 form and I don't think that is one of the file types allowed as an attachment on the forum. I know that you sent me an MP3, but I don't remember how.

I'd posted it on my web server and sent you a link.  I did this because I didn't know what limits you had on your connection speed and attachment sizes.

If you want to send me an mp3, I'll send you a PM with my email details.  I don't want the addy to get around too much as I already get more spam than I'm happy about...

Anyway, thank you for all your effort so far. - D.

???

Lawrie, I'm more than a little confused.  How does

"the tied note (stem up, Pos 6) is stated before the slur destination (stem down Pos2 -4,3) "

differ from

"... the other way round, the  tied note (stem up, Pos 6) is stated before the slur destination (stem down Pos2 -6,1)"

Oops, that bold bit should have said After

Quote
That said, are you trying to say the order of entering the notes (i.e. temporal order) in the last chord makes a difference in the slur shape?

Yes

Quote
How can one tell?  Or are you saying the order is positional?  I can't see a difference in left to right positions.

The difference is in the order within the clip.

The first:
Code: [Select · Download]
|Chord|Dur:4th|Pos:6|Opts:Stem=Up|Dur2:4th|Pos2:-4,3

As compared with the second:
My example...
Code: [Select · Download]

Adam's original...
Code: [Select · Download]

Does that help at all?

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
G'day Duncan,
unfortuantely we were having some troublems with getting things right on the pieces we are playing on Sunday and ran out of time.  I was somewhat frustrated but could not do anything about it.

Sorry I can't give you better news at this stage.

Given that our band AND a reasonable proportion of our congregation are relatively young I will probably need to "modernise" the lyric slightly...  You know, convert "thee" to "you" etc.  I think I can manage it without losing anything.  May also not need to ...  Will wait and see.  I've also been working out the chords so our guitarist can play it (think I've got 'em right, mainly F's, F7's and Bb's?).

We will not be able to reproduce your lovely sound as we do not have the musicians to do it.  We can, and will, add our own flavour, as we do with everything we play, and I'm pretty sure you'll like the result.  Our biggest drawback at this stage is that our keyboard player is not a pianist by any means though she is trying hard.  Only 14, never had formal tuition and would rather play guitar...  She does good under the circs.  Our guitarist has no "lead" skills... YET!  Bass player is great, drummer is very good but doesn't read music, flautist is still working on her skills and moi on trom and flugel.  I'm not too bad but never seem to get enough practice in :(

We have some very good vocals and I think you'll appreciate them.  I'll probably support the melody on flugel unless I need to try to pick up some of the piano left hand on the trom.  Won't know 'til we have a go.

Just gotta get it looked at properly!

General Discussion / Re: How to separate treble & bass staves from one staff w/ ledger lines
G'day Warren,
something else I noticed...  In the original there were several instances of staccato notes that were re imported as shorter duration notes.  E.G bar 1 staccato minim chord, imported version crotchet chord.

There are several other oddities too.  E.G. Staccato quavers coming in as crotchets - should have been semiquavers to be consistent...

The last chord in the second slurred section is the other way round, the  tied note (stem up, Pos 6) is stated before the slur destination (stem down Pos2 -6,1)

General Discussion / Re: midi connection to my electronic keyboard
G'day Liz,
there's already a lot of info on the forum regarding this kind of difficulty.  Perhaps a search will reveal the solution you need.

If you start here: http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/nwcforum/search.php?type=msgtext&term=midi+keyboard+cable
you will find a lot of topics that already cover this issue.

That link is to the old forum.  On the new forum, if you put the following search terms into the search field in the title frame you will get the same topics in a different format, you will probably get a few more too as well as replies that were made after the forum changeover.  The terms are: midi keyboard cable

One quick question does spring to mind...  Are you remembering to press the "record" button in NWC before you start playing the keyboard?

General Discussion / Re: How to separate treble & bass staves from one staff w/ ledger lines
G'day Warren,

It is a piano acc. all on one staff and I would like to break all notes or parts of chords into the treble staff.

Is this about it?

Export to MIDI (I used type0) then re-import,
Next,
Next,
Map each channel..., max chord 18, next,
Edit: First selection - Pitch C5 through G10, Second selection C0 through B4, Next,
Finish:
Voila

General Discussion / Re: french horn instrument patch
G'day wangchung,
welcome to the world of inadequate synthesizers...

If you have a sound card that supports sound fonts like the more recent SoundBlaster series then you're in luck.

Search the net for soundfonts and you'll be surprised at the variety around.  You could also look for softsynths if you cannot use soundfonts.

If you search this forum there are many discussions about getting better sound with lots of links, but probably the best soundfont source out there is Hammersound: http://www.hammersound.net

If you have access to a Yamaha S-YXG50 softsynth it has a very good Horn patch.

However be prepared to be somewhat disappointed as far as brass patches in general are concerned.  I have searched gigabytes of soundfonts and have never found what I consider to be a good brass sound, although this is very much a subjective matter and you may find something you like.

General Discussion / Re: Comfotable Notation Size?
G'day CDon,
I do a lot of charts for our church band.  Mostly to reduce the number of pages on a stand, many of our charts in original form are 3 to 5 pages and this is simply too many.

As a result I fiddle with staff point size and vertical sizes a lot.  I personally find, and feedback from the band members seems to agree, that a staff point size less than 16 is starting to get too small.

As we usually have the lyrics on the chart too we need to accomodate them as well.  Fortunately we rarely have more than 2 lyric lines and often only 1.  This is good as we like to run the lyrics at 12pt, again any smaller is too small and cannot be read easily.

In addition I need to allow space for chord markings.  I don't usually bother with "fret charts" but have done.  Normally just the symbol, 'A', 'Bm' etc..  Again space must be allowed for these which I usually set fairly large, around 16pt.

In the end, the vertical sizes are usually on the close order of 18 and 18, adjusted to allow for minimising the page usage.  I've only ever had to go to 3 pages once!

You need to allow enough spacing to easily find the system you're reading from, if they are too crowded you get lost.  Better to have larger upper and lower sizes and have a smaller staff size than to have smaller upper and lower sizes and a larger staff size.

Another thing that I do is have all the lyrics, text directives, chord markings, rehearsal marks etc. on one staff.  This I call the "lyric" staff.  I usually copy the staff that has the melody to this staff, hide all the elements, then add the additional markings.  this staff is then layered over any other staff I may want to use.

Thus, when I arrange a trombone or flugel part for myself or a flute part for my wife, we have the exact same staff structure, lyrics, chords and other markings as everyone else.  Note that our keyboard player is NOT a pianist and reads the chord charts, not a piano part.  Where the "colour" instruments (brass, flute etc.) are silent I cannot use multibar rests if I am to have the lyrics and chords visible so I usually have invisible crotchet rests with "preserve width" comping marks centred over them (using Boxmarks or now my new -soon to be released- SwingDings font).  This allows for a little improv. to go on too should the occasion warrant it.

Hope this helps...
