General Discussion / Re: Human Voices
G'day Tony,
have you received a PM from me?  I sent one a couple of days ago and I'm not sure if you got it...

General Discussion / Re: Human Voices
G'day Tony,
there doesn't seem to be a lot of good voice patches out there, but I did find one once that wasn't too awful.

'twas in a soundfont called "My Own".  Trouble is I don't remember where I downloaded it from...  May have been that contest site that you find the Merlin ones at...

General Discussion / Re: Triplet notation appearing in wrong place
G'day Fitz,
actually, that triplet is on the head end 'cos the leading rest has a stem direction of "down".

To confirm, unlayer your snippet, highlight the rest and press <shift-up> - see the triplet move?  Now <shift-down> and it goes back down.  <Shift-Down> again and that removes the explicit stem direction and it will stay down...

General Discussion / Re: Triplet notation appearing in wrong place
G'day Marty,
just had a look through my "Alfred's".  While the tuplet section is too long to reproduce here, essentially it says that normal or preferred placement of the tuplet bracket and numeral is on the stem side of the note.

However, it also makes allowance for the bracket and number to be on the head side if there is a need for it.

So, my interpretation is, that while your triplet mark is not where you'd prefer, it is actually correctly placed.  Nevertheless, it would be good if we had the option, all same as ties and slurs, or better still, a tick box like atriculations.  Along with tuplets other than triplets.

Perhaps a visit to the wish list?

General Discussion / Re: Converting WAV to NWC
G'day Spence,
don't waste your money mate.  My comments in https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=5673.msg36914#msg36914 stand.  Wav/mp3 to any "notation" format (including MIDI) ain't gonna happen.

The information in the wav/mp3 file is a single, complex waveform.  There is no individual track/instrument information available to be extracted.  Any claims by software developers to the contrary is, IMHO, just "snake oil".

The only possible exception to this might be for a single "voice" recording, but even then I doubt it would be much good.

General Discussion / Re: NIFF files
G'day Damon,
hmm.  The post I commented on seem to be displaying differently now...

When I made my post I'm sure it said "I notice your a New Damon", now it says "New South Welshman" - which is, of course, quite correct.

If I misread the post earlier I apologise for confusing the issue.

General Discussion / Re: Converting WAV to NWC
G'day Spence602,

<snip>

I'd still like to know what software to use to be able to do it myself.

The only software that works sits between your ears...  Extracting notation from a music file like a wav or mp3 has proven to be exceptionally difficult.  Even for a single voice.  Then you add multiple voices and you can pretty much forget it.

The problem lies in the spectra of the sounds.  E.G. a human voice singing a note has overtones (harmonics) up the kazoo.  It is not a simple sine wave signal.  It's the other bits around the fundamental that causes all the problems.

If you have access to a spectrum analyzer you can see this quite clearly.  What is most interesting is that many of the harmonics end up having amplitudes as great or even greater than the fundamental.

To add even more difficulties, a well trained human voice is about as pure as you'll get without electronic production.  When you consider the sounds of, say, a sax or a trombone, or a violin - the list goes on.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but there isn't software to do it successfully yet.  Or at least, not that I've seen.

General Discussion / Re: Can't change tempo.
G'day Adam25352,
the "clip text" you see in David's reply is from NWC2.  It is not supported in NWC1.  You can copy and past the text you see into a staff in NWC2 and it will create the objects for you.

Similarly, if you highlight all or part of a staff in NWC2 you can copy and paste into a text editor and get a "clip" similar to David's posting.

User tools are something else again but they work on the clip text.  Using a tool you can manipulate the clip text and then re-insert it into the staff.  There is a user tool starter kit available here: http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/nwc2/usertools/

Other information and some tools written by users can be found here on the Scripto: http://nwc-scriptorium.org/nwc2scripts.html

General Discussion / Re: NIFF files
Click on the word "here" - it's a link to the latest version.

Once unzipped, you run the program and either drop the xml file into it or, like I do, use the open link to select a file.

You need to have NWC2 already open and not in a dialogue window.  The tool does the rest...

General Discussion / Re: Serious bug in length of Whole Notes (But Not Rests)
OK, here goes...  No offence intended to anyone, this will probably sound a little terse...

First, lets ditch the name "whole note" as it is misleading and use the older name "semibreve" - I don't want to go into too much history as it would only add confusion.

To my knowledge (and I did some checking up to make sure I hadn't missed something) the semibreve is worth 4 beats in x/4 time.  It cannot be used in 3/4 time as a 3/4 bar does not have 4 beats.  It is worth 4 beats in a 4/4 or 5/4 bar.  It is worth 2 beats in 2/2 or 3/2 or 4/2 etc..  It is worth 8 beats in a 9/8 or 12/8 bar etc..  It cannot be used in a 6/8 bar as there isn't 8 beats in a 6/8 bar.

It is worth exactly 4 crotchet or 1/4 notes.  It is worth exactly 8 quaver or 1/8 notes.  It is worth exactly 2 minim or 1/2 notes.  No more and no less.  To attempt to use it to fill a 5/4 bar in it's own right is incorrect usage and no musician will be able to sight read it 'cos (s)he won't have a clue what you're trying to do without careful examination.  They will be looking for the missing note(s).  Especially if they only have a lead sheet and not a multiple instrument or piano score with which to compare voices.

It does NOT exactly correlate with a "whole" rest which has some special considerations allowed for it to make rest notation easier.

I hope that clears things up a bit.  I agree that tied notes to fill every bar in a 5/4 work looks a little untidy but that's how it is.  Fortunately 5/4 is not very common (unless you're playing Mission Impossible... :)

General Discussion / Re: Serious bug in length of Whole Notes (But Not Rests)
G'day Kahman,
I'm pretty sure there's nothing to be corrected...

While the whole (semibreve) rest can be used to occupy an entire bar (except in 4/2 and 8/4 which require a breve or double whole rest) the whole (semibreve) note cannot.  I'm not talking NWC limitations here, but standard notational practice.

It may not look as neat, but I'm pretty sure that tied note is required.

General Discussion / Re: NIFF files
G'day Damon,
no NIFF I'm afraid, but all is not lost!

Check out this thread:
https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=4576.0

and especially this reply:
https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=4576.msg34732#msg34732

David Palmquist and Tina have both been using this for some time and David especially has sung it's praises.

I have just recently been trying it and found it to be most effective.  It saves me about 1 hour on a 3 to 4 page (quick and dirty) piano score (I can key stuff in pretty fast), and reduces the risk of RSI :)

The MXML import isn't bad...  If I get the available corrections right in Sharpeeye then the work to be done in NWC is much reduced.

Well worth trying and heartfelt thanks to Nicolas Hatier for creating the converter.

General Discussion / Re: Any suggestion for sending NWC music to an VSTi?
G'day ces,
I know just about zilch about VSTi but if you are able to read a MIDI stream then perhaps something like MIDIYoke can help.

MIDIYoke is a virtual MIDI cable that can be mapped to connect MIDI inputs and outputs, it can also connect 1 input to several outputs...  It's more than that but that'll do for this question.

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
G'day all,
for those interested and who may have missed the scripto update a few days ago, there are updates and new releases of my font suites:
  • SwingDings - A matching suite of swing/jazz (handwritten style) fonts
  • MusikDingsSerif - A matching suite of serif fonts
  • MusikDingsSans - A matching suite of sans serif fonts

Each suite contain:
  • An alternative NWC2 notation typeface
  • A matching symbol font in the same vein as Boxmarks
  • A text font with additional glyphs for making boxes and over/under lines etc.
  • A text font with 'euro' characters
  • A chord font to make text chord construction much easier
  • A replacement for the NWC1 notation typeface
  • There is also an extensive instruction document with glyph to character and '<Alt>' code tables

There is also a "late breaking" update for users of SwingDings.  If you downloaded SwingDings before this update appeared then you should download the update.  If you downloaded SwingDings after the update appeared then it is already included in the zip you downloaded:

SwingDings-V1c.ttf.

Download links are available from the scripto:

http://nwc-scriptorium.org/helpful.html#fonts

Thankyou to everyone who has shown interest in this project, those who have contributed bug reports and suggestions, and those who are using the fonts.

General Discussion / Re: MIDI recording question
G'day Kahman,
I understand your problem...  'bout the only thing I can think of is if someone very good at 'fuzzy logic' were to take a hand and write some very clever MIDI recording software that can somehow figure out what your intent was rather than what you actually recorded...

You know, take the MIDI stream and analyse it in context.  That way it could do things like figure out whether the note was just loud or accented instead, hopefully make a good guess at staccato, detect things like tempo variations etc..

A nice little pipe dream I think...

3027
General Discussion / Re: MIDI recording question
G'day polarj,
so have a click track set to 'ppp' so's ya can't hear it.  Improv all ya like.  NWC will simply try to fit it into the bars that result from the click track so you'll get a lot of funny length notes and wierd ties but at least you'll have it down.

Then you can decide whether you actually want to keep it and if so then you'll still have some work to do but at least you'll know the 'intent'...

3028
General Discussion / Re: MIDI recording question
G'day Polarj,
you can record in "step time" - what you've just done, or you can record "real time".

To do this you need to create a click track of some kind.  When you hit record, NWC will play this track and you can record against it.

I'm short of time at the moment - wife's calling me for dinner :) - but if you do a search of this forum on the subject you'll come across quite a lot of discussion, and even a sample "click track" file IIRC.

Sorry, I've gotta rush...

General Discussion / Re: Playback of colliding notes
G'day Rick,
I just did some testing and I'm not totally convinced that it is all NWC...

I did the initial playback on my Yamaha softsynth and had to check 2 or 3 times to be sure I could hear what you were talking about - it is there but so slight as to be indiscernable without a back to back comparo like this.

I then changed, in rotation, to:
  • Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.
  • SB Audigy 2 ZS Sw Synth
  • and both audigy 2 ZS hardware Synths (different sound fonts).

The M$ one was the worst - cutting off the minim Eb in the first chord with the quaver Eb.  The staccato sound of the final triplet is also very evident in the first 2 bars.

The 3 Audigy synths were all about the same as each other, maintaining the Eb in the first chord but still giving the staccato effect on the final triplet Eb in the first 2 bars

As stated above, the Yamaha was almost perfect.  Just a hint of cut off in the finel Eb of the triplet in the first 2 bars but you really have to listen for it.

My conclusion is that the issue is probably a combination of what synth you're using as well as NWC.  NWC is probably the main factor in the shortening of the Eb in the triplet but is not the cause of the minim Eb in the first chord being shortened, that's the synth's fault.

General Discussion / Re: Where did the icons go?
G'day Stephen,
that will probably be a file association issue.  Likely your registry has a bug.

You could try a reboot to see if it is transient.

Have you recently installed any software that may have messed up the file association?

Actually, an easy way to test is double click on an NWC file and see if it opens correctly.  If so then the association is basically OK.

If the association is broken you could try (re)installing the NWC2 Viewer.  This might repair it for you.

If the association is OK you can open an Explorer window, select |Tools|Folder Options|File types Tab, locate the NWC extension in the list, highlight it and click the "Advanced" button.  In the dialogue that opens you can click a "Change Icon" button and select whatever icon you want.

General Discussion / Re: Problem with staff groupings
G'day K.A.T.,
'ow ya doin' mate?

The first method wrecks the measure numbers that appear at the beginning of each staff.

Hmm, so it does.  I don't normally print bar numbers so it didn't occur to me.

Quote
The second method needs absolutely perfect WYSIWYG to work (and we know that's not possible...).

I use "digital white out" reasonably often.  It is an absolute must to use preview to manage placement, the edit window simply isn't up to the task, but while fiddly, it isn't hard.

In the case of covering the left of the staff, you would only have to get the placement relative to the start of the bar correct once and then copy the character to whichever location was necessary.  Not too difficult, but somewhat tiresome.

Overall, 'twould be better not to have to work around this.
3033
General Discussion / Re: Problem with staff groupings
G'day Fitz,

If you only have one staff, as for a separate part, then the left end of the staff remains open. If you layer it however, it shows the bar at the left.

I can think of a couple of work arounds for that

  • Adjust your page margins such that the left margin is about 1 pixel outside your printers printable area.
  • Use some "Digital White Out" - set a highlight colour to white and place a character from a font like Wingdings that lets you overlay the left edge of the staff.

I prefer the first as it's easiest.  The second method means you need to repeat the process at every system break.  Not fun!

General Discussion / Re: Dotted half note time signature
G'day Fitz!
Again, can someone tell me why you would want such an encumberance? If I ran across this in a score, I certainly would not know what to do with it.

Me too!

That said, my son (the one who gave up music to be a drummer) gets all excited 'bout weird time signatures like 17/32 and 23/16 and other strangenesses.  Why can't he just go back to the piano...  Still the drum kit's not at home anymore and that's a big plus!  :)

General Discussion / Re: Problems with NTWPATCH
G'day Tony,
hmm, I could probably help with the NWC2 iTree but I've never had much to do with NWC1's NTWPATCH.INI.

Perhaps someone else can help wit NWC1

For NWC2, my guess is that you need to configure the bank selection.  E.G.

Selection from my Default.nwcitree (highly modified :)   )

\Organs\Jeux\Standard=Bank(42,0)
Montre 8=0
Prestant 4=1
Doublette 2=2

Note the Bank(42,0) where 42=MSB and 0=LSB in the bank select section of the MIDI Patch Instructions in Instrument selection...  The bank you need to identify is where your Organ patches installed in the synth configuration.  42 is standard for Jeux

I imagine a similar issue exists with the NTWPATCH.INI

3037
General Discussion / Re: Problems with NTWPATCH
G'day Tony,
found it.

The section marker for your patch list is as follows:
[jeuxdorgues1]

For the Patch list Type at the head of the .iniof file you have:
jeuxdorgues=

Note the missing "1" - or the trailing "1" in the patch list section marker.

Either way, make 'em match and it'll work.

General Discussion / Re: Nested triplets - a challenge?
G'day folks,
as I haven't seen the original score I can only say what I think is easiest to read, and that's Rich's version.

Carl, sorry to disagree but I think that making the rests visible would only complicate things if I was trying to sight read it.

General Discussion / Re: Scriptorium Update
G'day Rich,
can't seem to find the link for "The H series" nwc file.  The info page is there but there's no link to the work itself...

3042
General Discussion / Re: initiating new topic
'tis not so bad as you might think!

Recent versions of NWC2 have introduced changes in system font choices which have necessitated the abitilty to store the system font selection in the NWC song file, thus the song file format is now changed.

This means that a pre system font flexible version of NWC2 will not be able to open an NWC2 file saved by a version that gives system font choice.  Just as NWC1 cannot open any NWC2 file.

Does that make sense...?

General Discussion / Re: Can't write to autosave folder
G'day fthynne,
I'm using Noteworthy 1.75b with Web Update 2 (32-bit) on Windows XP Home with SP2.

While I'm editing a score I get error messages that Noteworthy cannot create a BAK file. It is trying to do this in the folder C:\Program Files\NoteWorthy Composer\AutoSave, which (reasonably enough) is not writeable by a non-admin user.

I have tried to change the Autosave folder to  one that I own, but after browsing to choose it, the change is not effective. I can't find a relevant registry entry either. Where are my personal options stored, and how can I change this setting?

I'm guessing that you have an NTFS file system which allows for user access controls to be applied on a folder by folder and file by file basis.

Couple ways to fix:
  • In NWC, go to |Tools|Options| Folders tab, dbl-click "Auto Save/Recovery" and change the location to one where you have rights
  • Login as an administrator user, browse to the folder and change the access rights (only works if you DON'T have simple file sharing enabled)

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
G'day fitzclan,
when you change the notation typeface it changes only the staff related features.  Clefs, time sigs., key sigs., flags, rests, note heads (this one is pretty subtle) etc.

The text fonts - staff italic, staff bold, page title text, staff lyric, page text, page small text - need to be changed individually.

General Discussion / Re: Software limitations or cheap sound card?

This has been the subject of some debate quite a while ago.  Basically we need Noteworthy to change the controls available to us in "Multi Point Controllers"

General Discussion / Re: SwingDings update for NWC2
Hey Fitzclan!
Thanks for the welcome home.

I won't talk about the holiday, had better ones but ya get that... :(

Now to more important things.  The latest zip file has some updates in addition to the new NWC2 system font.  So if you visit the link above and download the zip file you'll get them all.

You'll need to delete any (of my) fonts that start with "swing":
SwingDings
SwingText
SwingTextEuro
SwingChord

If anyone is running the SwingDings version of NWC2STDA then you'll need to delete it too and restore the original from your backup OR from the extra copy that is in the "Noteworthy Composer 2" directory under "Program Files"

Then simply copy all the font files EXCEPT for NWCV15SwingDings-V1a.ttf (this one is still, and will forever be, a replacement for the NWC1 system font) from the zip into your Windows/Fonts directory.

That's it.

General Discussion / Re: Software limitations or cheap sound card?
G'day Christian,
basically, your control of MIDI effects is as good as your synth...

NWC does have some limitations in relation to MIDI controls, but AFAIK all the effects you're trying are correctly implemented within NWC itself, it simply remains for the synth/sound card to implement 'em...

It is worth noting that you may need to enable sound card support for some of 'em.  Things like reverb etc.

General Discussion / Re: M-Audio Keystation 49e Issues
I'm a pretty methodical fault finder...
At this point, assuming you've done the uninstall/reinstall of the software and driver, the device being faulty is, in my opinion, a fairly high probability and I would like to eliminate it.

The next highest probability is a corrupt Windows registry or possibly dodgy driver files.

We need to eliminate something so a good start is to see if the device works in another machine.  If it does then your PC gets the nod as being the problem, if it doesn't then we look at the device itself OR the associated software.

Assume that its the software, look for updated drivers - I think you've already done that so perhaps we have a faulty device after all.

Have you had a response from their tech support?
