General Discussion / Re: The Draw Bar
<snip>
1. At the beginning measure 19, it says 1, 2 while in the song sheet 1 & 2
2. At the end of measure 20 it is closed, while at the next one  is is not closed, what does it mean.
3. At the top of the section closed bar there is number 2, what does it mean
Again what will be the effect of all the special Ending in sound when we play it

1. It's the same thing.  It means the 1st and 2nd time through you use that special ending.
2. The closed ending and the open ending are primarily cosmetic, BUT the closed ending is a positive visual reminder that particular ending finishes at that point.  By convention, the last special ending after a repeated section is not closed.
3. I assume this is an NWC file as that is an NWC "Local Repeat".  Local repeats should NOT be used with special endings as the special endings don't work properly on local repeats.  To make special endings work correctly you MUST use Master Repeats.

If you had master repeats in place then the flow would be:
1st time through, use the 1,2 special ending - repeat back to the repeat starting point
2nd time through, do the same as the 1st time
3rd time through jump from the end of bar 18 and continue from the 3rd special ending (bar 21).

HOWEVER, as you have used local repeats (with a 2 on the local repeat ending) then the flow would be:
1st time - play to the local repeat, then go back to the repeat start
2nd time - play to the local repeat and stop.
There won't be a 3rd time while there is a special ending after the local repeat.  If you remove the 3rd time special ending then after the 2nd time through it will continue on past the local repeat barline into bar 21.

Bottom line, local repeats are really a bit of a kludge BUT they can be useful in exceptional circumstances if you understand how they work.  I almost never use them, or at least not that I recall in the last 15 or 20 years.

The exception to this is when I want to simulate a swing rhythm using a hidden tempo, or conductor, track.  I usually setup a single bar with the swing setup and then set a local repeat for the number of bars that get played.  NB this is not necessarily the same number of bars as in the song because repeats affect the number of bars actually played.

General Discussion / Re: The Draw Bar
Hi Lawrie,
When I tried to download and play it, it sounds like the saound of piano two. My shong sheet, has quitar chord and the usual Noteworthy Note, so I supposed it can play both piano sound and guitar sound, so we hear like full music.
Isn't it.
No, a staff cannot have 2 different sounds at the same time.
Thus the objects will play back using the "instrument" that is assigned to the staff either in staff properties OR whatever the last Instrument change inserted specified.

If you want a guitar sound as well as a piano sound you need to create another staff and assign guitar to it.

The chord objects are primarily for the visual effect.  The fact they can also play back sounds is a useful bonus IMHO

General Discussion / Re: The Draw Bar
Thank you Lawrie, but how can we draw it for 2 measures, sorry actually the area for special ending I should have written for measures 19 and 20, When I tried like you said, it only cover for 1 measure.
Special endings have a mix of options.  For a first special ending that covers 2 or more bars:
Bar 1 - insert a special ending at the start of the bar that us marked as the "1st Ending" and has nothing else checked.
Bar 2 onwards - insert a special ending at the start of each bar and click the "Continue prior ending" button
Last bar of the special ending - insert a special ending at the start of the bar, click the "Continue prior ending" button AND then click the "Closed ending" checkbox.

The "Closed ending" checkbox puts the vertical line at the end of the special ending that you are looking for.

Not that I'm aware of - I seem to recall they are somehow linked to your printer driver...  Which makes sense now I think about it.

General Discussion / Re: beat repetition
Hi David,
AFAIK RepeatMark.ms and RepeatMark.test only draw the marks themselves.  You still have to manually repeat the required notes and hide them in order for the sound to be correct.

These objects are fine and I have no problem recommending them (see a previous post of mine in this thread)

Neither are installed by the NWC Installer as they are not part of the default object package.  Threads associated with them are linked below.  I'm not sure if RepeatMark.ms is still actually available but RepeatMark.test is available in the thread.  Download one of the examples, load it in NWC and then press <Ctrl+J>  and choose Online Sync.  Once the sync is complete it should be possible to install the object by clicking the update button that should appear.

RepeatMark.test - https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=9756.msg69779#msg69779

RepeatMark.ms (deprecated) - https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=9576.0

Their location on your installation of NWC is shown in |Tools|Options|Fonts (tab)| "Object Plugins" entry.

General Discussion / Re: beat repetition
Hi Lorenzo,
what you've installed is a set of fonts.  There are 3 suites:
SwingDings
MusikDingsSans, and
MusikDingsSerif

They consist of alternative system fonts (for noteheads etc)
Text fonts, Euro centric text fonts, Chord fonts, and other symbols (like boxed letters etc.)

Set whichever ones you require as fonts in your "Page Setup" Fonts (tab)
You can optionally replace ALL the normal font assignments, the system font plus assign User fonts for things like text chord symbols and other symbols like the afore mentioned boxed letters.

If you look at the example NWC file I attached previously you'll see I assigned MusikDingsSerif.ttf to User1 so I could demonstrate it.
If you check the text entry for one of the bar repeat symbols you'll see how it can be used.

These font suites were designed to supply symbols and typefaces unavailable to in NWC natively.  They became so commonly used they were added, with my full permission, by NWC's creator as an optional inclusion in the distribution media.

If you're happy to do some research, search the forum for "SwingDings" - there has been a LOT of discussion.  I originally developed SwingDings (the first of the suites) when most serious discussion about NWC was in a now defunct newsgroup.

There is also some info on the Scripto:
https://nwc-scriptorium.org/helpful.html#Fonts

General Discussion / Re: beat repetition
Looks fine to me.  I've attached a version that uses the character from my Musikdingsserif font suite in place some of the ones from Times New Roman for comparison.  I didn't try too hard to get them centred, just wanted you to see the difference in visibility.

The image file is in case you haven't installed the Pardy Suite of fonts.
113
General Discussion / Re: beat repetition
As a general rule, I simply copy the repeated bar into the next bar, make the contents hidden, then, I place a text entry of the bar repeat symbol from my *Dings suite.  Can take a little juggling of position to get it acceptably centred.  Once happy with the appearance I simply copy the bar as many times as required.  Very useful for drum scores, but I have my own way of doing those, using layering, that makes them look AND play right.

However, while answering this I  had a vague recollection of an object for this purpose so I went hunting, and guess what I found:
https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=9756.0

So Lorenzo, it appears you have some choices  :D

The attached image is my version, not the object.

General Discussion / Re: flip a tie upside down
Interesting, I've never had any success the few times I tried that approach so I gave up, assuming it just wouldn't work - live and learn I guess  8)
115
General Discussion / Re: flip a tie upside down
This is not true, AFAIK - markers can flatten slurs. Attached is an example where NWC typically creates a high-arching slur to avoid the flat signs; if you want to lower that slur (e.g. if it intersects lyrics on the staff above), you can force the slur to go through the accidentals by adding two low-lying markers at the two intermediate notes.
That's interesting  H.M.  I've never been able to get it to work.
<wait 5>
OK, I just tried an experiment.  It only works if it's prior to a note with a flat.  Sharps and naturals don't seem to impact the slur in the same way as flats.
Also, it will only lower the curve to the level it would have been at if the flat wasn't there.  You cannot lower it any further.

Helpful...
116
General Discussion / Re: flip a tie upside down
The option is in the note properties.
I usually select the first note in the slurred, or tied for that matter, section, press <Alt+Enter> then use the option to select direction.

If you want ALL slurs on the staff to go in the same direction just select the entire staff, <Alt+Enter>, Notes (tab) etc..

It is almost certain you will want to adjust the shape of the slur, you can do this to some extent by using "Markers":
Position the cursor where you want to move the slur end up or down, press <@>, make sure the Slur checkbox is ticked and press <Enter>.  Select the marker and adjust vertically to where you want it <Ctrl+Shifft+Up/Down Arrow>

NB if you have a slur that seem to swoop really high or really low, then adjusting an end point in the direction of the swoop is the only way to reduce the swoop.  Experiment, you'll see what I mean.

You can place markers anywhere along the slur, but the ones between the ends can only increase the curve from the default, they cannot flatten the curve, you can only do that from the ends.

General Discussion / Re: Contacting Support
Lawrie and Richard, thank you.
I accidentally loaded the objects today (Friday) - I think they were installed when I downloaded and installed 2.8 Beta 1.

Hi David, installation of the 2.8 beta, AND I think 2.75 a2, and maybe a1, not sure about straight 2.75 will automagically install a starter set of objects.  The starter set are the only ones preloaded - the rest you have to explicitly install.
118
General Discussion / Re: Contacting Support
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 2002 would be V1.75 would it not?

I'm going to assume that the server has a database that can tell that you're entitled to the V2.x update.

General Discussion / Re: Contacting Support
<snip>
The programme works okay on the new machine, although I cannot access user objects.  Not gonna worry about it tonight, though.
Hi David,
User plugins live in the directory specified in:
|Tools|Options|Folders (tab)| in the entry "Object Plugins"

Mine points to:
C:\ProgramData\Noteworthy Software\nwc2\UserPlugins

Though I've also found the actual files in that location PLUS this one:
C:\Users\(your login name)\AppData\Local\Noteworthy Software\nwc2\UserPlugins

Gotta confess I'm not certain which is the default as I'm pretty sure I fiddled with it a bit...  However, I suspect that it might be the latter location as that way different users on the system can have their own collection of objects installed.
120
General Discussion / Re: Contacting Support
Yeah, that is a problem.  However, I'm sure there are reputable retailers in the States where such devices can be purchased for not much, if any, more.
121
General Discussion / Re: Contacting Support
Thank you for your assistance. I will try to recover from the old computer.
No worries.

For what it's worth, I have a home network and I keep copies of my installers on my server...  Just in case.

Now I know not everyone is in that happy position, BUT, a Windows backup schedule to an external HDD isn't hard to set up, and USB hard drives aren't really that expensive anymore:
Amazon have 1TB flash drives from as little as $23 USD:
https://www.amazon.com/High-Speed-Portable-Compatible-Computer-Keychain/dp/B0BZH6Y4M1/ref=sr_1_17_sspa?keywords=usb+hard+drive+1tb&sr=8-17-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9idGY&psc=1

And 2TB drives for very little more - some are flash, some are "spinny" drives.  Cheap security IMHO.

BTW, I'm not endorsing that particular flash drive.  It's just an example I found with a very quick search.

General Discussion / Re: MIDI files
It sounds like Windows has lost its default MIDI synth setting.  There used to be a control panel applet (MIDI mapper) that allowed you to set the default MIDI synth, but that disappeared some versions ago.

Sooo, with that in mind, CoolSoft have a MidiMapper replacement:
https://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/midimapper

Reckon this could help.

User Tools / Re: Number notation tool
Hi Lawrie,

I've been using version 2.8 Beta 1 also, but reinstalled 2.75a.2 to test the changes I made to solve FrankSit's problem. But it seems these changes now cause problems in 2.8 Beta 1 (your error1).

So now, after investigating it, I made the changes that are ment to work in both versions.
And I tested it successfully in both versions.

As for your error2: this is caused by a restchord, which has no 'Pos' field, only a 'Pos2'.
But the original post says: 'Remark: Chords are not supported.'
(A 'normal' (not rest)chord doesn't cause any error, but only one note is being handled.)
So now I added a check: if there's any chord or restchord, it will cause an error with the massage "Sorry, chords are not supported.".
Thanks Gust,
Tested OK now :)

User Tools / Re: Number notation tool
<snip>
I had to do some extra changes in order to correct an issue reported by FrankSit.
Hi Gust,
just tried this for the first time, and thus have downloaded the current very latest version.  I end up getting one of the following 2 errors.
The first error came from the "Anchors Aweigh" sample file - top Piano staff, the second from a file I made quite some time ago.  This error comes from the top staff which has some diamond head, muted notes as cues in a few spots, this file also gets the first error on a couple of other staves I tried (I didn't test every staff)
I am running 2.8 Beta 1

General Discussion / Re: MIDI file import sets blank key signature plus accidentals
Hi Bernie,
the hidden (that's what we call greyed out symbols in NWC) natural on the F line is how NWC represents a C/Am key signature.  It is possible to set up a staff with no key signature altogether but some things don't work predictably if you do this.

I just did a quick test and the MIDI file I imported came with key signature...  A check online confirms that key signature information can optionally be included in a MIDI file, so I can only assume the file you're importing simply doesn't contain a key signature.

You can change the C/Am key signature to whatever you want (select and press <Alt+Enter> to get the dialogue), change it and press <Enter>.

For each staff: Fix the accidentals by using use <Alt+T> (to activate the tools menu), <A> (to select the Audit submenu), <A> (again, to perform the audit for accidentals) and it will fix 'em right up.  It would pay to do a quick check in case of a glitch, but it's pretty reliable.

General Discussion / Re: Rule of the stem up and stem
Actually this is not true. In the latest version of NWC, the Shift+Up/Down keys will flip RestChords. However, the direction for the RestChord will be that of the rest, not the note stem. That is, pressing Shift+Up will put the rest on the top and the note on the bottom, with the stem pointing down. (And vice versa for Shift+Down).
Ohh, thanks for the correction Mike - this is GOOD news  :D
129
General Discussion / Re: Rule of the stem up and stem
Thank you  Lawrie for your explanation. On other things, for practical reason, any note sign such as dynamic variance that we already put in the Soprano staff for example, we do not have to make it on the other stavas right?, It will automatically follow as the 1st staff?. Because sometimes when we layered it, it will not be even, so it looks not good for printing the song sheet.
Normally, if you have split stems for the two parts, the dynamics "follow the stems".  That means that the Soprano part, which will be stems up, has dynamics etc above the staff (occaisionally lyrics too) and the Alto part (stems down) will have dynamics etc below the staff.  NB this is definitely not a hard and fast rule, it's just something that is commonly done.

Also remember, for correct playback each staff needs its own dynamics and dynamic variances.
130
General Discussion / Re: Rule of the stem up and stem
Thank you  Lawrie for your quick response, Since I already keyed in as per songbook, is there any short cut to turn the stem up or down at once?.
Sure, position your cursor at the start of the staff ( press <Home> ) then hold down the <Shift> key and press <End> (<Shift+End> ), this will highlight, or select, the entire staff.
Next, while the whole staff is still selected, press <Shift+Up/DownArrow>.  This will change the stem to all up or all down, depending on which arrow you choose.
Important point to note, if there are any RestChords in the selection they will not be changed and you will need to recreate them manually.

General Discussion / Re: Duplet
Hi Lorenzo,
I'm not sure how you downloaded the object so I'm going to take you through step by step starting at downloading it.
  • Follow this link (Right click, open in new tab or window) https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=9229.msg66599#msg66599
  • Read the description and instructions
  • There is a "code" section, click the "select" link
  • Press <Ctrl+C> to copy the selected text
  • Open NWC, click "Edit" then "Paste as new file"
  • This should create a new song showing the contents of the NWC clip and give you an error relating to the object, unless the object is already correctly installed
  • Assuming you need to install the object press <Ctrl+J> then click the Online Sync button
  • Once the sync is completed select the missing object and click the option to install it (I already have this object and I'm not sure of the exact steps without having an object to install so I can remind myself)
  • Once installed it is available to you from the normal <J> dialogue - the object is called "TupletMarks.fso"
  • A reminder - this object is a VISUAL thing only, it does NOT affect playback

Thank you Lawrie, yes we familar with the above, those are the note in number  that we sing when we learn to a song.
I will read and lear the website that you gave me.
That's good, and I hope the links help.

Anyway when you said. over 7 hours on the road. Where did you go in Australia. Is it far from Adelaide?. The family of my daughters is in Adelaide. We went there when our 2nd grand daughter was born in 2018. I wish we could meet at least we call, when we go there someday.
From where I currently am it's about 1100km to Adelaide (maybe 12 to 12.5  hour drive depending on the route), and I just travelled around 450km (took so long because of traffic congestion and road repairs).

To give you some scale, it's about 4000km from Sydney to Perth (across Australia from East to West) - Adelaide is about 1400km from Sydney, so about a 1/3 of the way from Sydney to Perth.

For scale, New York to San Francisco is around 4600km.

NB these are all road distances, not direct.

General Discussion / Re: the very inner key
Hi again Frank,
I've finally reached my destination, over 7 hours on the road - bit tired now...

The links below will help, but you will need to learn what they show - there may well be better/easier resources, these are just some I found after a very quick search.  They look OK.

I'm not sure how the number system you use relates, but I'm sure it does.  The basic sol-fa system relates directly to major:
Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do = C D E F G A B C for a "C" major scale.

Try these links to help understand the theory behind how scales and chords work:

General Discussion / Re: the very inner key
I'm sorry Frank, but you need to learn more western music theory in order to understand this.

I'm unable to take the time to try to explain anything at the moment as I'm going away for a short time and I'm already late leaving.

As a starting point try to learn about:
Major scales,
minor scales, (this can get tricky with natural, harmonic and melodic scales all being subtly different - for now stick with natural minor)
How chords are constructed, particularly Major and minor triads and 7th chords
The difference between Major and minor chords and thirds.

I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding internet resources to help.

The image you used is of the "Circle of Fifths" (clockwise) or "Circle of Fourths" (anti-clockwise).  It is a quick reference tool to help understand relationships between keys, scales and chords (which are really all the same thing in the end).
136
General Discussion / Re: the very inner key
Hi Frank, they are the "relative minor" keys of the major keys in the outer ring.

E.G. the major key of D has 2 sharps (F and C).  The relative minor of D is Bm (B minor) and it also has the same 2 sharps (F and C).

The scales of D major and B minor both have the exact same notes in them (D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#); but the scales start on different notes.  D major starts on D (D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#), and Bm starts on B (B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A).

You will notice that the relative minors are always named 3 semitones lower than their relative major:
Maj -> rel. min.
A -> Gbm or F#m
Ab -> Fm
B -> G#m
Bb -> Gm
C -> Am
etc.

General Discussion / Re: Changing the key signature
Hi Lawrie,
Thanks for the above website I have read it and  I got more lesson from it.
Now my question is, since for us Indonesian, it is easier to learn song by singing the Number note (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,1). Do you have any other way to key in the number into the lyrics other then manually key them in?.
Into the lyrics?  No.
My best suggestion is this User Tool written by Opagust:

General Discussion / Re: Changing the key signature
Thanks Lawrie for your explanation, what do you mean by  middle C (C4) to the C above (C5), does it mean we lower or higher on the reange of 4 semitones?.
What I do according to Richards' explanation, if I lower in the Soprano let's say 2 semitone, in Alto, Tenor and Bass I lower them in 2 semitone. Am I right ?.
All it means is that the "tessitura" (range from lowest note to highest note) of the Soprano part should, if possible, stay between C4 and C5.  See here for an explanation of note names in so called "scientific pitch notation":
https://www.allaboutmusictheory.com/piano-keyboard/music-note-names/

The idea is to try to make a best case compromise to place the Soprano part within pitch limits that can be sung by the congregation.  So, as an example, you may have a song where the range of the Soprano part is F4 to A5.  This is too high, so you need to do a key change to bring it down to, say, Bb3 to D5 - this range is a little outside the desired C4 to C5 BUT it is not impossibly so, therefore this is a good compromise.  F4 to Bb3 is a drop of 7 semitones, so you need to transpose this imaginary song down 7 semitones.

You must transpose ALL the parts so they are all in the same key.  When you do this it is possible that some of the lower parts could end up too low, so you need to consider moving the notes around so that all the chord tones are still covered.  This could be as simple as raising some of the lowest notes to the next octave up, OR even moving some notes around between the lower voices.  This needs to be considered on a case by case basis.
140
General Discussion / Re: Changing the key signature
A good rule of thumb for general congregational singing is to aim for a soprano line that stays within the range from middle C (C4) to the C above (C5).  In truth you have a little leeway here (say Bb3 to D5), but if you aim for the range C4 to C5 you shouldn't go far wrong.

Alto range would be around G3 (below middle C) to G4 above.

Tenor range an octave below Soprano, I.E. C3 to C4, and

Bass would be F2 to F3.

Strictly speaking, all these ranges should be able to be extended by around a 5th (E.G. C4 to G5 for soprano) but that extension will not usually be achievable by untrained voices.

General Discussion / Re: Final variant
An alternative to Mike's solution is just to treat the "variant ad libitum" as a text entry, vertically positioned at the same height as the lyric.  For horizontal alignment, put an invisible bar line just after the clef at the beginning of the lower line, and put the text to the left of the bar line, left or right justified as wanted, placed "at next bar."
Can you include a short example of this? I think I know what you are describing, and it's something I have tried to do before, but I've never gotten it to work.
Hi Mike,
the key here is an "invisible" bar line (actually "transparent"), not a hidden one.
Place a barline, select it, and press <ctrl+shift+up> once - voila the bar line is now invisible:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.751,Single)
|Bar|Style:Transparent
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
Versus:
Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.751,Single)
|Bar
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

General Discussion / Re: Final variant
Yep, "gap the staff" on both staves.

More completely, place a section end barline at the end of the normal ending, and set "Force a system break" on the top staff on this barline.
Then put a boundary change in <]>, select "Gap the staff" from "Stand alone print instructions" - try a gap of 50 for a start - on both staves.
Finally key in the ad libitum variant variant, placing more section end barlines at the end and again setting the top one to "Force a system break"

The only thing this won't do is put the dotted alignment lines in between the top and bottom ending barlines.

To achieve these lines you might try RickG's Markup tool:

Thanks Gust,
hopefully the next update to Avast will fix the false positive.

Input file sent.  Forgot to mention, the user I sent the musicxml file to imported it to Sibelius.

User Tools / Re: NWCCONVERTOR
Hey Gust,
I downloaded this a couple of days ago and it seemed to work fine except the recipient of the MusicXML file had playback problems because of transposing instrument parts being played as if written in concert pitch...

I resaved the nwctxt without transposed parts and went to convert again and my AV software is complaining that it's infected with something called "FileRepMalware[Trj]".
So I downloaded a new copy and got the same error.
I'm guessing I had an AV (Avast) update between the first and second uses AND that it's probably a false positive but are you able to check it out?

General Discussion / Re: MIDI to score
Hey Flurmy,
I recall a VERY OLD php based user tool written by Gennaro Granito that IIRC appeared in the old newsgroup during the NWC2 beta program.
It's called Consolidate and needs a php install to work.

OK, just checked, the User Tool Starter Kit apparently still includes the php interpreter, so I assume you have installed the starter kit ;)  and should be fine to try the user tool.  Only trouble is I can't find the tool here on the forum...

I'm also not sure if it would be much help.

General Discussion / Re: Extra spacing for longer notes
Hi Sam,
to confirm, you go to |File|Page Setup...|Options (tab)| and remove the check mark from "Increase spacing for longer notes"?

I figure you have this correct but it doesn't hurt to make sure.

AFAIK this is the ONLY place that needs to be changed, however, if you have forced system breaks anywhere they might be masking the change.  So I would also check that the final barline on any staff does not have a "Force system break" check, ditto Boundary objects that start a new system.

Also, don't forget that this change is current song file specific.  It will NOT affect any other song, nor will it affect any new song unless you modify your template(s).  It will also not affect any new song that does not use a template.

General Discussion / Re: Note of a chord
You can right click on a single chord member to change some, but not all of what you ask.

Unfortunately, extra accidental space is not one of the things you can change.  Extra accidental space, like extra note space, will affect the whole chord.  The only way I can think of to add extra space to a single chord member is to use layering.
