Is there any way to make the first note of a song the recipient of a tie? I'm starting a song on a second page and the previous measure ended in a tied note. I tried hiding a tied note, but the tie also becomes hidden.

I am trying to print a 2-part staff with a triplet. Why can I create notes as same-note chords, but when they are triplitized, the notes become separate?

General Discussion / Triplet Layering Issue
I'm still trying work-arounds to get triplets to look like I want. I thought I had what I wanted; it looked good in Viewer Mode. But in print Preview (and when printed), the layered triplet brackets do not line up. Is this a bug? (BTW, I have a third layer to add the downward stem to the first note.) This is for printing only. See my next post for why I cannot use chords. Also, was there a way with 2.5 to control triplet brackets (head vs. stem, distance from note,  etc.) or was that my imagination, or an unfulfilled wish?

Whatever the cause, I had the same problem the other day. I don't remember what I did, but I was able to get to the Scripto using the back button, or something. I use IE, V6, 7, or 8 (I can't remember, and I'm at a different computer now), on Windows 7. I don't go to the Scripto often, but I was looking for a Beethoven piece (found it!).

I don't understand why everyone doesn't upgrade. Isn't it a free upgrade from 2.x to 2.5? And from 1.75, I think it's only about the cost of two cups of Starbucks ($15). Micro$oft upgrades are much more!

Clarifying: The second part refers to beaming when a clip is opened. When I download and open the clip, the entire clip (except the two sixteenth notes) is beamed, even though the source was not beamed, but if I paste the clip, nothing is beamed. I.e. "It," in the second part, refers to the entire clip, not the sixteenth notes.

The following has not yet been beamed. When you select Automatic Beam, the two sixteenths at the start of the second strain do not beam. Is that because it is not a full measure? Using V2.5.2.

This is very odd. I've pasted this clip about five times. The source is not beamed, but whenever I post the clip and then download it, it is beamed. If I select the clip and copy and paste it into a blank score, it is not beamed. Huh?

As you point out, adding a bar to each staff line fixes all of my issues. And I suppose if I wanted no bar line, I could use an invisible or hidden one. (what's the functional difference again -- oh, never mind :) )
But are the attached screen shots, without a bar line, a bug? The alignment is screwy in the editor, viewer, and print preview. And should the slurs go back to the previous bar line, as they do, or to the start end of the gap?

If a file cannot be opened as it was saved, due to printer or font issues, then you might want the text exactly positioned as in the original, even if it overlapped other things (spaced with spacers, no preserve width), or you might want it to move other items, even if that repaginated things (preserve width). Unless everything matches, I guess there is no "best way."

Richard, I tried following your attached instructions to modify ROSE. I set my printer setup to A4. With no changes, Print Preview (page 1) showed four 3-staff systems beginning at  M1, M6, M12 and M19. I added the "Start a collapsable section" before the G-clef in M1, and a "Cancel" before the first note in M9. Print Preview still showed 4 systems, each starting on the same measures as before, except Sys1 was only 2 staves. So far so good.

I then changed the staff labels. Since "Piano" is so much shorter than "Grand Staff2", the Print Preview now had the four systems starting at M1, 7, 12, and 18, and page 2 beginning with M24, which is the Coda. I think the next step of your example was meant to show a gap in the middle of the staff, so I changed the labels back to "Grand Staff2/Pno." Now the systems began with M1, 6, 11, 17 and (on p2) 23.

I added a gap of 6 on each staff as the first object in M24. In the editor,  I saw a sort of ruler of 6 steps (each step divided in half) in the gap of the staff.  In Sys 1 and 2 it was touching the Master Repeat Close and touching the staff where the staff resumed. (The resumed staff had no bar line. Is that correct?) But in Sys 3, the "ruler" began about 1.5 units past the MR Close. It did touch the staff where it resumed, but that resumption was about 1.5 units after the other two systems. Print preview was worse: the gap on Sys 2 was about double the gap on Sys1, and on Sys 3 it was slightly larger still. Is that a bug? And the slurs in Sys 2 and 3 began just after the MR Close, through the entire gap, even if the gap was made very large. Shouldn't ties and slurs begin at the beginning of the printed staff, or only slightly before?  (That's as far as I went with the example.)

As I follow these forums (fora?) I sometimes get curious about where some of the contributers live. I've noticed that many regular contributers have never filled out their location on their profile. I only recently added mine, even though I've been a minor contributer for years. So I'm hoping everyone who sees this (unless you have a strong reason to remain anonymous) to update your profile with your location. (Just for my own curiousity.)

Most likely, the staff with the 'tr' was actually two staves: the one you saw probably was muted, so it didn't play. There should be another staff which was hidden, and had the actual notes needed to play the trill. (Access hidden staves in the File menu, page setup I think; I'm not looking at the program right now.)

I have done this by splitting the piece into two parts. The first has one staff, the second, 2 staves. I had to set the starting page number for the second half appropriately. If the two stave part is at the bottom of a one staff page, then I cut and paste (really! scissors and glue; well really tape) before photocopying.

I made a similar inquiry about 3 years ago. I was hoping to write a user tool to do what you suggest, https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=6483.0 but, alas, I abandoned it. (So I have never actually written a user tool.) Of course, it would be nice if Noteworthy could do this automatically, similar to automatic beam. Then, you could tweek anything it did which you didn't like.

Unfortunately, that is one of the things that this very reasonably priced software will not do natively. I'm not sure if there is any workaround. Possibly compose the verse and chorus separately and merge them after printing?

A second welcome. I was also having trouble understanding what you were trying to do, so I didn't offer advice before this. Let me make some assumptions. If they are incorrect, then my advice may be faulty.

I will assume you are a new user. I will assume you are running the Evaluation Version. And I will assume you are trying to edit a file written by a registered user (perhaps from the Scriptorium).

I am not that familiar with the Evaluation Version, but I believe it will not edit files created by registered users. The restrictions are here: http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/composer/evaluate.htm .

I believe it will play such files, and allow you to poke around in them to see how they were made. Perhaps someone else can describe the restrictions more fully. Can the Evaluation Version edit such files at all, perhaps without allowing saving? Can it un-hide hidden staves, or turn layering off on those files?

You mention pasting "to another page." You should realize that pages are not determined until printing. While editing, each staff is essentially on a single line. When printing or previewing, the staff or staves is/are broken into pages.

If my assumptions are incorrect, please clarify what you are using and trying to do. Again, Welcome!

Sorry, I edited this while you were replying. A few questions: Why does the DC in your file not honor the repeat the second time? And what if you actually wanted it to play AABAAB. But really, why does mine take the final repeat a second time. I suppose it stops short becaues there is no fourth ending.

I have a song with 3 verses and a refrain. I want it to play V1, V2, R, V3, R. The attached file plays V1, V2, R, V3, R, V3. Can someone please explain why V3 plays again. After V1, V2, R the final repeat returns to the beginning (Section Repeat Open), the third ending is taken as expected. When it gets to the final repeat the second time, why doesn't it stop? Do I need to use a DC or DS? The way I have it sems more intuitive.

Edit. changed attachment. Actually plays as I said, except thet the second V3 stops before either ending.

The "do it yourself" link seems to go to a page with a heading of "Replace whole rests with four quarter rests", and a large text box (empty). Below that is the text "Copy the above to your clipboard (it's pre-selected) and paste it into a song you have already open in NoteWorthy Composer." but, as I said, "the above" seems to be empty.

Edit: I think I am catching on. To use, you must extract the source from the page, modify it to do what you need, and save it as .html. To use your new function, open the new .html file in your browser, cut data from an nwc song, paste it into the box, and click "Read". Then the previously pasted text will be modified and selected. Copy that modified data and paste back to the nwc song. Is that about it?

While I was fooling around with chords, attempting to answer the question about d and d#, I was confused by Noteworthy's behavior, and curious about how it SHOULD be displayed. I placed a D# (cursor on D, press #, press enter), then pressed ctl-enter on the same staff line. The note moved over slightly (why?) and the note now had a sharp and two stems -- up and down. When I tried entering the natural note first, it looked the same. When I played it, it seemed to play both notes, but looking at it, it looked like two D#s chorded together. I also tried entering a Dnat with a D# and saw one two-stemmed note with both a sharp and a natural. In real music would this need to be shown as a D chorded with an Eb instead of D#? Is there any way to show a chord of D# and Dnat in the same octave?

Regarding fermatas, the default is to have it extend the note value by zero sixteenth notes (i.e. display only). If you select the fermata, right click, select properties, click on the "Tempo Variance" tab, you can select the number of extra sixteenth notes to hold the note.
Regarding accenditals: do the soprano and alto appear to be on the same staff? If so, they are probably actually on two different staves, and layered together. To see the staves separately, un-check "Layering in Edit Mode" under the View menu. There should also be a toolbar icon to do that. On mine, it is right text to the eyeglasses.

I was looking at Rick G's first .nwc example, and was wondering about a few things. Why did he set the stems to zero length, rather than matching the length and direction of the corresponding note in the other staff? The editor seems to display zero length stems as gray (or olive (?) on the active staff). When overlapping objects (on layered staves) have different colors, it looks like when neither stasff is active, the color displayed is from the physically lower staff. So, when layered in the editor (and the bottom staff active), the stems and beams are gray. I tried setting the stem lengths to match in both of the layered staves, and it looks much better in the editor. (One slur end moved slightly.) But I can't figure why the stem of the second note (lower layered staff) is still gray. Can someone explain it?

Never mind. I see that that note (only) is hidden. I'm not sure why, since it was headless, with zero length.

Just to throw in my $.02, I know of many little nits that people have complained about for years: n-tuplets, slur appearance, grace note time-stealing, "simple arpeggionisation". They may have had a lot of time to work on these things but, as they say: time=money. If the product cost more, they could hire a programmer for each one of those tasks. At its current price, they cannot. And a small staff must set priorities on what is practical to implement. But overall, and especially for the money, I believe it is an excellent product.

I can't believe I stumped the experts. Thanks for the suggestions. I was using Stacatto in a layered staff, where one staff used the staccato dot but the dot for the other note collided with the firts one. I'm using a hidden Stacatto (and Semplice, per Rick). Since they are hidden, it doesn't really matter what the second one is, but I wanted something someone looking at it would understand. I may use the same technique with Legato instead of slurs on some layers where the multiple layered slurs don't look good.

I'm sure this is something easy. I had an existing SATB piece with 4 separate staves. I added a fifth staff for S2, moved it below the first staff, went to the first staff, and tried to layer it, but "Layer with next staff" is greyed out. Why would that be?

Old thread, but I just ran into this, as I tried to cancel a Legato with a Tenuto, and it didn't work. The HELP should say Legato and Tenuto are both rendered the same. Also, is there a name for the "normal" style? What is the appropriate style to cancel Legato, Tenato, or Staccato? I know any other one would do it, but which one would make the most sense to a reader?

But in reviewing it to post here, I just realized, when layered, it will look ok. But the stem in Layer 2 (a headless note in the chord) is going to sound in layer 2. I don't want that. (You can't mute one note of a chord, can you?) I guess I need a note stem for layer 1 that I can add as text. Is there a font and character which will give me a stem which will a) align with the note head, b) match the other stems in length and thickness, and c) be common enough to be on everyone else's computer?

I had a measure on a very old piece which may have been created in V1. I just opened it in V2 and wanted to change the stem direction. It seems to be impossible. If I copy the measure into a text editor and change the "Down" to "Up" and paste it back and it turns into text. And I can't seem to create it from scratch with the stem either way. I hate to use layering for only one measure.

User Tools / Tool for layering??
   I have been transcribing about 6 songs a year for about 5 years for an annual choir (for rehearsal). I generally want it to look like the original music, which is often 2 staves, one with soprano and alto, one with tenor and bass. I use layering so I can make a version with one part on one channel, the other parts in the other. I would like to see a user tool to help with matching stem lengths between the layered staves. I've been doing it manually, which is a lot of work when the song has many eigth notes. Although I make my living programming, I am not familier with php. It seems that the "user tool" interface can only deal with one staff at a time. Is that correct? I also considered using the .nwctxt file, and running it through some kind of a program or macro to analyze it and create a new  modified file.
   It would have to compare corresponding notes in a pair of staves. If the stems were in the same direction (which may be set, or defaulted) it would make the adjust the stem length of one so the stem ends were in allignment. This is most important for eight notes or shorter, but would not hurt for other note values. It would also set the slur and tie directions for the upper note to upward, and the lower note to downward, unless the notes were tha same pitch. I'm sure there would be other things it could do, but that is what I would start with.
   Right now I need more help with the user interface: how do I get the needed elements to somewhere they can be parsed and edited. Do the "tool gurus" think this is even possible? If you think it's possible, I wouldn't mind someone pointing me to a template, or anything else which might help me get started.

But I find two glaring errors in your review of NWC.
1. Keyboard input is available, and is much easier and faster than mouse
input. You can enter note and rest values and positions, sharps, flats and
naturals, bar lines, ties and dots, all with the right hand by using the
numeric keypad. The other functions also have keyboard shortcuts.
2. NWC is the second lowest cost product reviewed. (The lowest is only $4.04
cheaper.) You state: "For half the cost, you can purchase the Silver or
Bronze award winning products." Those products, according to your review,
are actually $60.95 and $360.95 more than NWC, about two and a half times
and nine times the cost of NWC.
