General Discussion / Re: Glissando
The symbols and implementation of Glissando are not (yet) directly available in NWC.

The symbol for Down glissando is "f" on your keyboard,
and the symbol for Up glissando is "d" on your keyboard,
if you have installed the font "MusikDingsSerif" as (say) User Font 3.

This font is one of a number which are included in the installer "PardyPack"
which can be downloaded from:
http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/uc/pardypack/

For a discussion about the implementation of glissando, see:
https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=8039.0

General Discussion / Re: NWC Viewer Beta 9
This is the same way which NWC prints and shows "preview".
Numbers only start to show on the 2nd "line" (if at all, depending which option the author had chosen.)

If selected, the editor, shows bar numbers for every measure.

General Discussion / Re: Automatic Beam Question
I also use NWC 2.5.2, and whichever way I get the clip into NWC, automatic beam does not beam the two sixteenth notes at the open master repeat.

Looks like a minor bug to me.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Hymns out of the NoteWorthy Box !
Thanks Richard.

Looks wonderful - somewhat like magic

- I'll need to go through your instructions VERY carefully
and my 12 year old HP Laserjet 1100 is not very helpful
when it comes to trying to set to paper size of A5
(It does know A4).

General Discussion / Re: Rogues Gallery - the answers
I would love to see the Roques Gallery again
- especially as a means to remember those who have passed away.

Those of us who remain,
may have to post more recent pictures
in order to remain recognizable.

General Discussion / Re: Displaying fast running notes
Warren,
As the music is so cramped for space,
there are some things I would do:
1. Set Left and Right margins to 1.0cm (instead of 2.54)
2. Set Top and bottom margins to 1.7cm (Instead of 2.54)

This gets the page count down to 10 (from 11)

That's all I have.

General Discussion / Re: Getting to grips with the new features in 2.5
You are quite correct - with all the goodies available now, we  have to learn how to use them.

Can't help you with all your queries.

In the attached "Cello_EXPER.nwc" I've used the SPACER many times.
(Prints at 20pt on A4 to 1 + 1/2 page, with 1.27cm margins all round.)

Without using the spacer it would need much more space to print.

Making triplets better readable, is another application for the spacer.

General Discussion / Re: Lyrics Placement
Thanks Lawrie,
Method 1) is new to me, and will be a great help.

I've used Method 2) for intros. It works.
(One has to remember to keep "Underscore shown as a space"  Checked / active
otherwise the underscores show in the preview and presumably would print as well.)

General Discussion / Re: Invalid instrument tree
Rich,
don't be too sad -
I suspect that all of us, occasionally miss seeing / hearing/ finding VERY obvious things.
(I: More OFTEN than occasionally.)

My TIMEX wrist watch had been missing ever since (months ago) I'd last had blood drawn for tests.

Today, a cool, misty morning, I decided to put on a fleece jacket (the one which I hardly ever wear)>
PRONTO: Out drops the missing watch.

Tips & Tricks / Tip in connection with BAR LINEs
The official Help about bar lines is:
Bar Line Command
This command adds a standard bar line at the insertion point. This command is most efficiently issued by pressing the <Tab> key from the computer keyboard.

For those who have not discovered it yet:

Try using the "*" of the numeric keypad.

This is where lightning forced me to shut down

As the keys:
   ; , . / * 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - + <ENTER> <UP> <DOWN> <LEFT> <RIGHT> <DELETE> <BACK SPACE>
and the  <Ctrl> on the right of my keyboard,
are ALL comfortably within the reach of my Right Hand,
I use the mouse with my LEFT hand, after having swapped the buttons,
so that  CLICK is with the Left index finger.

The result:
During keyboard entry of notation, my RH  does the majority of the work,
whilst the left hand, using the mouse, selects insertion points, and the occasional item which would've needed both hands on the keyboard (or for which no keyboard short cut is available.)

Tips & Tricks / Re: Courtesy Accidentals
My experience (which may be retro):
When notating for INexperienced players -
1. Courtesy accidentals are just about obligatory.
2. Bracketed courtesy accidentals clearly indicate them as such.
3. NOTEROW.ttf, as a user font, (available at http://nwc-scriptorium.org/sfontr.html ) allows me to show
the courtesy accidentals in text at whatever point size I prefer.
   (7) for NATURAL, (8) for FLAT, (9) for SHARP.
4. Using "Preserve width" and "Justify Right" get them to display and print correctly.

WATCH IT:
5. When transposing, things can get quite tricky:
The text needs to be moved up or down, and
FREQUENTLY the accidental has to be changed to something else.

General Discussion / Re: Chord members with different durations
As explained by Rich.:

The attached *.nwc shows what the Right Hand looks like when split into two staves and layered.

Note: The user tool by Andrew Purdam: "adp_Parts.php" is makes it a breeze to split voices apart.

User Tools / Re: rg_Info.php - Tool to show version of current song
Rick,
Thanks for your installation instructions.
My apologies for taking so long.

I installed the latest rg_Info.php,
(but did NOT understand all the options available nowadays)
opened a file in NWC 2.5 Beta Preview 26
ran rg_Info as a user tool

and the output was to Stdout,
showing NWC and SMF playing times.

General Discussion / Re: Forum Profiles
Greetings from Roodepoort, in the metro city Johannesburg, South Africa.

General Discussion / Re: changing music
Small Addendum:
If the play back is to sound as transposed,
remember to UNcheck "Update staff play back transposition"

When you've done that for the first staff, NWC remembers your setting
and provides it as default for transposition of each following staff.

General Discussion / Re: Unmarked tempo change?
Rick,
I do not follow - please explain more fully.

Where does JAVA come in?

I use both IE7  and the latest FIREFOX, on XP3 Home edition, with all updates.
(Ditto for my wife's PC)
(I discarded IE8 because it had been giving too much trouble.)

General Discussion / Re: Unmarked tempo change?
John,
a user tool which I've frequently used since 2006, is:
EmptyBars.VBS by Peter Edwards

NOTE:
1. When you've downloaded  "EmptyBars.vbs.txt" , remove the ".txt" extension,
    Read the "ReadMe"
2. Install EmptyBars.vbs in the same folder where your other user tools are.
(AND hope that it will work from there
   - I've not been able to get ANY user tools, apart from those in the default installer,
to work on my wife's PC)

3. FIRST make a copy of the staff for which you want to create the Empty Bars.

The .NWC file, attached below, uses BOXMARK2.TTF for section numbers.

General Discussion / Re: Why do you use Noteworthy?

When PCs became available - I wished to be able to notate and play music by computer.
(My piano lessons had stopped in 1946).
NWC was recommended to me, by my friend, Barry Starfield -
in the days before V1.55, so that I could "do" music for my wife's orchestra(s).
I've been using NWC ever since.

All along, I've very much appreciated the helpful, friendly support of the NWC community
and am VERY thankful for all the User Tools, tips and advice
which have made life so much easier for me.

Yesterday (2011-10-16) Bettie's "Sentrumorkes 2011" had their FINAL performance,
27 years after starting the orchestra at the music center of HOëRSKOOL ROODEPOORT

General Discussion / Re: Additional features for a rehearsal tool
Richard,
Thanks, I do have the latest version of the viewer installed.

My preference would be for the "Tempo Adjust" facility (for up / down) to be directly visible,
in NWC as well as the viewer.
With the option to hide it, should the user so wish.

i.e. displayed similarly as for the volume control.

General Discussion / Re: Sibelius, alas!
Let's hope that NWC3 will include native MusicXML import and export.
Why?...
Because, as I understand it, MusicXML already is standardised (or in the process to be)
It would give direct access to Input/Output for many other music programs, without the need for a third party to provide the Import/Export facilities for NWC.
As an example of what can be provided
(and which might be considered somewhat "over the top"), see MuseScore.

General Discussion / Re: rearrange staff grouping
Carl,
your template is pretty much the same as I've been doing scores,
with a hidden, muted ch 10, zero line staff, open ended, to separate orchestral groups.

I've changed it a bit and added some advice.

General Discussion / Re: Hairpin horizontal placement
Rick has dealt with the visual aspect of (one sample) of what you may want to do.
Musically, my guess is, if you want to do a dim. on a single, held note:

Use a hidden, playing staff, write your note as tied, two halves -
and apply an mpc to the second half to obtain the diminuendo which you are looking for.

Note: You'll have to ask somebody else how to do it,
I can only point you at the tool which I think can do the job for you.

User Tools / Re: Question about using Andrew Purdam's adp_TransposeChords.php
Thanks Lawrie.
Somehow my quite detailed answer got wiped due many interruptions.
I try again:

In using the user tool  "adp_TransposeChords.php" as it stands on 2011-05-27:
Take the parameters in sequence:

1. For up transposition, just use numbers 1 to 11 (+2, etc., gets rejected)
For down transposition use -1 to -11.

2. IF you do want to enter the OPTIONAL Keysignature,
it must be the Keysignature to which you are transposing,
i.e the TARGET (not the source).

3. For the font parameter use "f" and a SINGLE "=", in the comparison, as in
"font=User4" as  was needed in the attached "Autumn Leaves_Corrected.nwc"

Just a reminder for those who use adp_GlobalMod.php, there other conventions  (similar to C ?) are used.
Here always use "F" for "Font".

For comparison "==", and, where required, for action "="
as in  "Text,Font==User2 Visibility=Default Text,Font==User2 Pos=7"

User Tools / Re: Question about using Andrew Purdam's adp_TransposeChords.php
Lawrie, thanks for reply.

The parameters I used were: 2 Gm font=User4
i.e. including the optional (source) key signature.
(Did I perhaps misunderstand, that I should've given the target keysignature?)

When I tried it now with "2 font=User4", I got the result which I would have expected.

By the way "+2" was rejected as a parameter.

User Tools / Question about using Andrew Purdam's adp_TransposeChords.php
(First of all, I have to admit that I do not know anything about text chords,)

In the attached "Autumn Leaves.nwc",
I've transposed both the music and the text chords
2 semitones up, from G minor to A minor.

(Note: for playback I've left the two staves to sound the same.)

It seems to me as if nearly all the transposed chords are 2 semi tones up,
except at M11 and M29, it looks to me as if the chords have been transposed only by ONE semitone up, F7 to F#7 and Fm7 to F#m7, respectively.

Questions:
1. Are the transpositions correct? and if yes, please explain.
2. Or is it a bug in the user tool?  If Yes, please ping Andrew Purdam for help.
3. Please point me to where I can learn about chords.

User Tools / Re: NWC to LilyPond
Phil,
I thank you again for your convertor -
BUT-
Sadly, Bettie is winding down her orchestra at the end of 2011,
(after 27 years) which seems to bring to an end my need of all the advanced goodies available in Lilypond.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Narrow 16th note spacing
Your's seems to be a solution to an old problem.-

In the present BETA Version is very much easier,
just to insert a spacer of 0.4 to 0.6 between each pair of notes
which need to be closer together.

Tips & Tricks / Carl Bangs' tip for extending horizontal line (multiple bars in special ending.
Carl, thank you for this tip -
I only read it today (2010-11-24) -
It's WHAT I"VE BEEN LOOKING FOR.

Just a comment, about the numbering of barlines in special endings:
As I understand it, the convention is that all the barlines under the first special ending should be EXCLUDED from the count, as per attached sample.

This convention requires one to go through the whole score, all staves, from top to bottom, to make the changes manually.
(For correct playback and performance, the special endings also have to be copied onto each staff).

By the same convention:
The "0" number for a bar number at the start of a piece which begins with a pick-up note.
Inside the piece, the barline at the end of a pick-up note is excluded from the count.
