General Discussion / Cues revised
Cues« on: 2005-12-10 04:57 am »

When using an inkjet black printer, cues can be made by using a color other than black for the desired passage. The result is a light gray which is easily recognized as a cue, particularly when the name of the instrument actually playing is inserted. Use staff layering to show the rests. Set layered staff color the same as the cue notes to get beams to match the notes

Light blue (highlight 5) works best work with a laser printer.
This no longer works with my laser printer.

General Discussion / Large Orchestra Template
For those who want to write for lots of people playing at the same time, this is a starting point. I'm sure that some improverments will be suggested.

General Discussion / Re: Trills
Then there is the other bit as well depending on the period the piece was composed in although a bit of a grey area where generally it is accepted that
prior to 1800 the trill started on the note above the written note .After that date
the trill commences on the note below ,in context of the key.Frederick Noad
Solo Guitar BK I
Actually the date is 1828, with the publication of Hummel's book on pano playing. It took several years, and the influence of Hummel's students, for the practice of starting trills on the princpal note (not the note below) to become widely accepted.

General Discussion / Problem wth slur
The slur into measure 7 from the previous line does not show. If you force a system break before the final beat of the measure, the slur shows, but the measure number is attached to the partial measure.

Tips & Tricks / Re: adding a rest underneath a note
You have to layer the top staff if you want all the rests and beaming.  If you can find a font with the French style quarter rest, thet can be entered as text, ands the NWC quarter rest can be hidden.

General Discussion / Re: Nested triplets - a challenge?
Seeing the ms. helped.

I think this does it, at least visually.

This is even clearer. As long as the musicians know that the eighth note triplets start on beat 4, all will be fine.

To make it clear I think the rests need to be visible.

General Discussion / Re: Comfotable Notation Size?
For orchestral parts I usually use 18pts. If it fits on a single page, I use 20pts. For a book, I use 16pts. If I have to play from the part, I use 20 pts, but my eyes don't work as well as they used to.

General Discussion / Re: french horn instrument patch
I simply recorded a single note representing the sound I wanted for each sound font directly to the hard drive of my computer as a wav file. If needed you can adjust the tuning of the note in processing. You can even cut out a broken attack. I have done the same thing for other instruments that I thought could be improved.

General Discussion / Re: french horn instrument patch
If you are a horn player, record your own. I have recorded several using different instruments, mouthpieces, and mutes. I have even the sounds of 17th and early 18th century horns.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Cues
Is it possible to beam eighth notes etc. this way? I couldn't figure out how to do it, which is why I proposed my alternate solution.

General Discussion / Re: tuning noteworthy
I checked a variety of pitches using standard orchestral instruments against my tuner and all were exactly in tune with A=440. My sound card is Sound Blaster Live,

General Discussion / Re: TRANSPOSING SETTING
Create a template with the proper transpositions for the instruments you want to use. Flute and violin are pitched in C, and do not neeed to be transposed, unlike horns, clarinets et al.
