General Discussion / Re: Making a hymnal
If you're going with a publisher, they probably do not want you to put two "pages" side by side like that.  They'd prefer you keep the pages separately so that they can lay them out according to their binding system (example: for a simple staple in the middle, you'd want pages 1 and 32 together and then 2 and 31 etc; for perfect binding, they use "signatures" of 8 or 16 pages -- that gets really fun.)

If you're your own publisher, then go ahead and use the method Lawrie suggests from whatever program you end up in at the end of the day.  If you don't have the "Pages per Sheet" feature in your print driver, you would have it if you installed PDFCreator.  You would then print to PDF and do the real printing from there.

Rich,
Thank you for that very cool looking April Fool!  Incidently, your artwork also is a perfect demonstration of how not WYSIWYG the editor is.  The Joker absolutely falls apart in print preview.

General Discussion / Re: NWC vrs Midi
About file sizes, I'd just like to add that MIDI files are also larger because of repeats.  In the NWC file, a repeat sign adds very little to the file size, but in MIDI, there is no "repeat" command, so the file doubles is size (assuming the repeat covers the whole song).

As far as using the sounds from Synthfont in NWC, you can do this with the help of free software called MIDI Yoke http://www.midiox.com/.  Essentially, after you install the software, you'll get eight or so virtual MIDI input/output devices.  Send the output of NWC to MIDI Yoke NT:  1 (Tools|Options|Midi|Devices used in playback).  Then set the input in Synthfont to MIDI Yoke NT:  1.  Finally, click the Input button on the toolbar of Synthfont.  And presto!  Beautiful music.

General Discussion / Re: I want just the music no voices
Software exists to do what you want, but it doesn't work too well.  The audio software that comes with Nero http://nero.com attempts to do this.  The free Audacity http://audacity.sf.net has directions on the web site to attempt such a thing.  In short, however, you will never really get the vocals out and if you get close, you'll distort the background stuff so bad, it will hardly be worth it.

Sorry.

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Clip Text in the new forum
Hello again.  I just fired up IE.  I can verify that the scrollbars now appear for long blocks of "code."  However, I cannot, on this lab machine, get triple clicking to work.  The shift-click method does work for me.

There are some technical issues with regard to enabling the integrated spell checker.

Yeah I read about that on the company's web site.  Another client-side spell checker is built into every mac :-D.

P.S.  This forum software makes nice use of ajax!

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Clip Text in the new forum
Ah interesting.  IIRC, the NWC code snippits in the old NWC2 forum were originally div's and had the same problem if you did a select all.  Since I assumed that nothing had changed, I gave up on select all.  Now I see they've changed to textarea's in the old nwc forum, which, because of their primary use as an input method, do let you use a select all.  As far as a scroll bar, interestingly enough there is one in FX (but not in IE).  Considering Eric's strong knowledge of php, I wonder if the code function could be converted to a textarea...

looking at the posts eric has ported to this forum, you should be able to get relatively the same effect with the <Image Link>code button.

like so..

General Discussion / Re: New Forum - Nice look.
I appreciate the new forum and your efforts to stop trolls, but I'm gonna miss the old home brewed forum.  :-( This 3rd-party product will take a lot of getting used to. Anyway, I'm proud to be an NWC virtuoso :-D.

May I suggest that you make things at least resemble the main page?

General Discussion / Re: ear pain
Hi Rudolf.
Welcome to the Noteworthy Composer Forum

Two definitions of "hard" come to mind.  If you would agree with the sentence, The harder I press the keys on the piano, the harder the sound is, then the problem is in the dynamics.  By default, playing the keyboard manually with a normal touch would keep you well below the fff dynamic.  But NoteWorthy Composer defaults to fff, which is known as 127 by MIDI unless you put in dynamics.  Even if, in NWC2, you change the dynamic velocities on the itree, it still defaults to 127 when you haven't put a dynamic in.  This has been described a few times on this forum as "bang, bang, bang."  So, the solution during playback is to make sure you have at least one dynamic on each staff.  Recording, I'm less familiar with.  Others will have to fill you in there.

If, on the other hand, your definition of hard is closer to a description of the warmth of the sound, then the culprit may be your speakers.  The late, great Fred Nachbaur mentioned that he used vacuum tube speakers rather than the transistor speakers attached to most computers.  As my physics teacher confirmed, even though transistors represent a technological breakthrough, vacuum tubes are still used for their better sound quality, which he described as less sharp and warmer than the sound you get from transistors -- ie, the sound is not as hard.  Solution: clear two big spaces next to your computer and find yourself a par of vacuum tube speakers.

General Discussion / Re: Different number of staffs to be printed in one song
looking at it from another angle, perhaps.
In the same way that we transitioned from muted staves to muted notes, could we transition hidden staves to hidden objects?  Hey! we already have hidden objects :-D.  I think its been mentioned before that if there is a whole line of hidden objects, NWC should take that as a signal to hide that staff for that system.  I wouldn't mind if NWC did this on a per bar basis and just left it as the user's responsibility to see to it that he didn't have staffs appearing in the middle of the system if he didn't want them to...

General Discussion / Re: Equal Temperance and Just Intonation
While I only have a very small understanding of Just Intonation, I'd love to hear the works that Jeremy Ewen mentions he has.  I think a decent way to send files is with YouSendIt.  Just type your own address to send to, and you'll get the link for downloading the file from yousendit servers.  Then you can post the link here.  If the size of the link is bothering you, you can shrink it with a service such as TinyUrl.

General Discussion / Re: Cadenzas - How to get small notes?
smaller note heads as a notehead option! now that's an idea.  I wonder why I never thought of cues being connected to notehead options.  (Probably because I've been on a considerable break from instruments and have instead been singing.)  Coupled with NWC2's ability to change stem sizes, I see no reason why a small notehead option up there with X-head and shaped wouldn't give us exactly what we're looking in making cues.  I second your suggestion.

General Discussion / Re: Problem e-mailing score
PDF is a very good suggestion, but I think you're only avoiding the original problem because your PDF software automatically embeds the NWC font.  In Word, you need to go to Tools, Options, Save and then check Embed TrueType fonts.  That should do it.  If you already had this option checked, then I would attribute the problem to Word being Word and tell you to run hastily back to your PDF solution. ;-)

General Discussion / Re: What NWC 2 SHOULD HAVE!
Hi Lawrie,
Unfortunately, the free server I was hosting it on, 000k2.com, disappeared one day never to come back.  Rather than retreat, tail between my legs, to 20m.com, where I had hosted the site, I just pouted instead.  Problem is, I really got used to having all the features I had at 000k and I don't get as many features at 20m.com.  But now would be a good time to resurrect the thing, since it would help me attract clients in web design.  If anyone knows of a host that allows perl/cgi scripts, password protection, and relatively unobtrusive ads for free, let me know.  Oh, and thanks for mentioning my bio.. it needed an update, too.

General Discussion / Re: What NWC 2 SHOULD HAVE!
Hi and Merry Christmas!

I ran across a2 playing the trombone in an enemble and it was I that was given the "didn't you know" look.  I was told it meant "all together."  That's way too modern sounding, but, hey, close enough :-D.

Rob: I really have enjoyed your sense of humor.  I can only hope that I will have as much command over Spanish, which I am currently studying, to pun like that.  Not having read all of them, Much Ado About Nothing is my favorite Shakespeare play.  Brings back good memories of my high school shakespeare class.  Interesting fact: there is considerable evidence that "nothing" was pronounced exactly like "noting" is/was.  Bring on the music notation puns...

General Discussion / Re: NoteWorthy under new management?
So I thought I would jump in and say something here, too.  Sorry you haven't hear much from me, but I've been rather busy starting college.  Now we're between the semesters, so I have a nice five weeks to relax a bit.  So, NoteWorthy Software, if you've got any major things planned for NWC2, roll them out before January 23rd, please. :-D.  Now, John, I realize you are frustrated and why you are frustrated.  You purchased for the same price the same copy of NWC as everyone else and now it seems to you that is is worth less.  Yet, NoteWorthy Software is purposely being very selective about who it lets into its beta testing group and with good reason.  They probably don't want the amount of people using NWC2 to get too big just yet.  Since this is pre-release software, they have every right to do that.  Once NoteWorthy Composer 2 has been out for awhile, everyone will have to pay for it.  Your problem with C and C# is well understood but is not an argument against the cost or availability of NWC2 because NWC2 handles the interpretation accidentials the exact same way as NoteWorthy 1.0 did.  I checked.  Your other major problem, tied notes, was explained away as an enhancement.  Kindly remember also that NWC1 is still in active development.  At times during the private beta period, features completely tested in NWC2 were added to NWC1, including import of lyrics.  I have not doubt that this will continue.  The big restriction is that the enhancement must not change the file format since that would create incompatibilities and headaches.  As far as tackling note heads before the accidential problem, what's wrong with that? Its the way I do my homework.  NoteWorthy Software has the right to tackle whatever problems first that they want to in a beta version of their software.  Note also that while they release the smaller things, they are working on bigger things.  For instance, there's something lurking under the letter "Z" ..
122
General Discussion / Re: Where have all the lyrics gone?
I still think nwc should ignore the mistaken extension in this case.  For various reasons, the internet is full of MIDI files with the wrong extension (.kar for a .mid and vise versa) and how is the user really supposed to know the difference.  NWC should be able to intellegently decide which file it has an then go to the corresponding routine.
124
General Discussion / Re: Print preview
If you make any change to the printer setup after you preview, this problem will occur.  "Any change" can mean:
- Your printer is not the default, so you have to select it when you go to print
- Your printer defaults to "normal" quality, but you decide you want a higher or lower quality.

If neither of these are happening, then this is a truly peculiar problem.
125
General Discussion / Re: round notes
eudcedit is what you want, but as far as I know, it only lets you make a few "private characters."  That's a unicode thing, I think, so it won't work in NWC. Its also quite crude.  You create a bitmap and it makes its best guess at what the vector should be.  If you're interested, PC magazine has a brief tutorial.
126
General Discussion / Re: Am I running out of room or memory??
One more thing: if you're printer defaults to "Normal" quality or the like and you print with "Draft" or "Economy," the printout will be different.  You would have to change the default setting to "Draft" to see what you'll get on paper.
127
General Discussion / Re: Am I running out of room or memory??
You're not previewing it and then printing with with a printer other than the default printer, are you? Differences in the print driver and the print resolution cause the notation to be slightly different and may cause it to be two pages instead of one, or something similar.  You can tell how much space you have by going to "My Computer" either from the desktop or the start menu and clicking on your hard drive.  If you have more than 2 GB of free space you should be a-okay.  You can't really run out of ram, because windows automatically just starts using a part of your disk as ram.

General Discussion / Re: changing note size and configuration
A further search on froogle reveals that most of them are the boxes that i'm used to. I guess I've just never learned the technical term, though it makes perfect sense to me now.  And it looks like you can get them for as low as $81.69.
131
General Discussion / Re: changing note size and configuration
Yeah I'd agree that you should get a converter to connect your TV right the computer.  Not only will NWC let you blow up the music as much as you need on screen, but you'll save the tedius step of converting to DVD each time.  One of the aforementioned "scan converters" is Froogle priced at $139.95.

Now tell me, I'm used to seeing those boxes where you plug computer to unit on one port, unit to monitor on another port, and unit to tv on the third port.  Have these been replaced by these "scan converter" cards?

General Discussion / Re: Quirk:auditing dotted (and double dotted) 64th notes
I realize you'd never need a dotted 64th note .. I just had a crazy "what if" idea and wondered what would happen if I tried it, knowing full well it wouldn't work.

Simplest solution would seem to be not to allow dots on 64th notes.

I agree .. it would be something so as not to confuse the novice.

General Discussion / Quirk:auditing dotted (and double dotted) 64th notes
Of course with the notes that NWC knows about, its impossible to balance out the rests in a bar after using a dotted/double dotted 64th note.  Here's what happens when you try:

Dotted 64th:
Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Key|Signature:C
|TimeSig|Signature:4/4

!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End
Double Dotted 64th:
Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Key|Signature:C
|TimeSig|Signature:4/4
|Note|Dur:64th,DblDotted|Pos:0
|Rest|Dur:Half,Dotted
|Rest|Dur:8th,Dotted
|Rest|Dur:32nd
|Rest|Dur:64th,Dotted

But what really gets interesting is when you do it a few times.  You eventually get: (see reply 1 because of the limit on number of clips)

Tim Brechbill's Timidity++ is the only version I've used.  It will do what you need it to do, but I notice that the link to his site no longer works.  The other versions for Windows are a bit hard to get working IIRC.  If you want Tim Brechbill's version, let me know -- I can send to it you.  It was free, so it shouldn't be a problem legally.

General Discussion / Re: OMR software that can recognize at 96 DPI???
96 DPI is terrible resolution and I'm surprised that those two programs can recognize anything at all.  I work with images that will go to press and they also recommend 300dpi and above.  That resolution gives enough detail for software (and humans!) to recognize what they are looking at.  Music that is faxed is a pain to read and that's usually at 150dpi.  I can't imagine trying to read music at 96dpi.

General Discussion / Re: feature request: live scrolling
I think I asked for this before -- it would be a very useful feature.

To clarify, David, in Microsoft Word 2000 and above, you'll notice that when you grab the scroll bar, the screen will immediately move in the opposite direction.  In NoteWorthy Composer, however, you have to release the mouse button before the screen is updated.

Aside.      I notice the default font has been changed to Tahoma - stylesheets are wonderful. Having now said that, I'll gonna look at the stylesheet ... and of course I'm wrong - its Verdana.  Anyway, I generally like a sans-serif font for menu items, but I'm not sure if its the best font for the forum.  Serif text is easier to read.  Also, can you (Mr. E. NoteWorthy Online) change to font in the Reply box to match the font in the forum? It would help when aligning things.

Peace and Merry Christmas.
