General Discussion / Silly notation
I occasionally remark that when writing music, you need to consider the person who will be playing your chart.  Here's an example of lousy writing I saw at band tonight:

Background info:
I play an older bass clarinet. It plays down to a written Eb, which is encountered reasonably often:

!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Note|Dur:Whole|Pos:b-11
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

Some bass clarinets will play lower, so you sometimes do see a written low D, ofen with a courtesy higher D bracketed so those without the extended bell will know they can play the note up the octave:

!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-8
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-5
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-8
|Text|Text:"(        )"|Font:StaffBold|Pos:-5|Justify:Center|Placement:AtNextNote
|Chord|Dur:4th|Pos:-12,-5
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

The low D is not seen often, so a bass clarinet player might have to stop to think about what it is, rather than immediately recognize it.   In that context, here's an example of really crappy notation I came across tonight:

!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Note|Dur:Whole|Pos:#-12
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

I've been playing bass clarinet since the early 1960s, and I confess I've never before seen the enharmonic spelling of the low Eb.  It was probably "correct" because I was in a sharp key signature, but a competent copyist would never have written that, because it is simply never encountered.

Another bugaboo is to be playing a run in a flat key, but encounter sharps as accidentals; or, in a sharp key, flats for accidentals.

My point is that, as amateur copyists, we should always keep in mind what the musician doesn't expect.  If you write something that isn't frequently encountered, it will surely disrupt the quality of a performance, particularly if you're using a sub who is sightreading.

In Print Preview, the song is only displayed for the length of the top staff (6 bars) , whether or not layering is allowed.  It seems the print command is governed by the properties of the top staff.  If the top staff is only a few bars long, you're only going to see that number of bars for the second staff.  The rest will be truncated.

The problem goes away if I pad the first staff with several rest bars:

The problem also goes away if I move the cue staff down, making the longer part the top staff.

Not a fatal error but an interesting buglet.

Something else I noticed here - it would be awfully nice to be able to beam grace (cue) notes across rests.

Tips & Tricks / What's a system?
Often you will run across the word "system" in the forums or help menus in Noteworthy.  I thought it might be useful to explain what it is.

Simply put, the expression is the same as staff.

A system is a staff.

If you have a piano score, the left hand part is one system, and the right hand part is a another system.

In a score written for a 15 piece band, you will have 16 systems if the group includes a piano.

General Discussion / Insertion Point/Selection Confusion
Quote
selection highlight on selected areas/notes does not always clear when moving the insertion point (either with the keyboard or the mouse.

I'm on Windows XP Pro, and I've had a problem since the very early days of the private betatest with the highlighted area refusing to clear, and then going wild - expanding with every movement of the mouse or right/left arrows.

This usually occurs after a heavy-duty edit, such as moving a large group of beamed notes up or down the staff.  In hindsight, I wonder if the change in stem direction as they crossed the middle line, or perhaps the need to add extra leger lines if the movement is in LegerLand, but I don't remember.  I think it happens also when I move other items (such as dynamics or text rehearsal letters) up or down a few times, too.  I think the program at those times is using too much memory too quickly.

It usually resolves itself I just reduce the highlighted area to one note or rest, delete that, then Undo the delete.

Sometimes, however, I have to reboot the computer to flush out memory, and that's a nuisance.

General Discussion / Forum bug?
I used the Show All Unread Messages feature a day or two ago, and found perhaps a dozen or more unread messages going back as far as January.

This seemed odd, until I realized that if I open a dialogue window, and close it without posting it, going to the Show unread posts since last visit takes me to a screen with no links to unread posts, even when I know there were others I hadn't got to yet.

Seems like a forum bug.

General Discussion / James Hay's Tune Book
I have uploaded photos of all 300 or so pages of my great-great-grandfather's Tune Book, dating from 1843, if anyone is interested in transcribing the hymns.

Go to http://Flickr.com and search for David in Delta to access them.

(edit:  Yes, Rick is right, search under "names")

They are not in order, because Flickr doesn't provide a way to sort except by the date uploaded, but the page numbering should be adequate.  Where there are two similar page numbers it's because they come from different sections of the book.

I hope some of you will enjoy working with the material.

General Discussion / Triplet bracket directionCan't paste this illustr
It would be nice to be able to control the direction of the triplet bracket to avoid the clashes they cause in a score, such as in this illustration at the third bar of A and at two before B.

(Sorry I couldn't put this on the wishlist, there's no way to attach a graphic there.)

General Discussion / Zoom level
I was surprised to find the zoom levels in 2.08 are preset.  You can't zoom to 50%. Makes it awkward if 33% is miniscule and 66% is too big for your screen.

I'd like to see the zoom level dialogue accept user input level.  Right now, entering 50 results in 500%.

64
General Discussion / Remove icon
The remove function seems to work - it is attached to the original posting in a thread, so it probably only works if the original contributor wants it to.  Otherwise, chaos for sure!!!

The lock topic button works, too, and probably the same way.

Tips & Tricks / Tired of searching for text symbols? Find them with this...
When I need text-based characters, I find it hard to remember what letters are needed.  The NWC2 template attached shows the letters and glyphs available with the standard keyboard characters for all fonts set up with the Page Setup dialogue.

I thought other NWC2 users would find it handy, so I'm posting it here.  If Richard would like to add it to the Scriptorium, that would be okay with me.

Users can change the fonts in this template to match the settings used in a currently active song file.  Just open the template, keep it in the background; then switch back and forth to copy a particular character.  You  can quickly adapt this template to use any fonts you have on your system.   If you do that, I recommend you save it under a new name.

You could also just copy each staff to the bottom of your current song file.  Since every character is in its own bar, it shouldn't distort your display as it would if they were all in one long text entry.

Each character is anchored to a muted, headless note with no stem.  You may want to set the inactive and active staff notation colours to something other than white to make it easier not to copy the notes.

I have not yet added the ASCII key combinations.  That's a project for another day.

General Discussion / Nested triplets - a challenge?

Tips & Tricks / Page marker for working with large scores
When editing a long score, it's useful to have visual reference points so you know which bar corresponds to the beginning of each page in the original hard copy score.

Using back-to-back section open/section close bar lines in a contrasting colour is one way, as in this example (imagine many bars full of notes on each page of a long page score, instead of these rests):

General Discussion / Show Unread Posts Since Last Visit function
Maybe I'm dreaming, but I think Show Unread Posts Since Last Visit only displays unread posts in the General Discussion forum.  I clicked on the  [NWC2] General Discussion and [NWC2] Instrument Trees links just now, and found messages that I'm pretty sure didn't show up when I clicked Show Unread Posts Since Last Visit.

If I'm right (and I might not be), then there's an improvement waiting to be made, or we all need to be aware of the limitation.

General Discussion / New behaviour in new update message
I've had the check for new update message three times so far this month when opening NWC2.  I don't mind once each month, but three times suggests whatever it was that limited the occurrence to once only in earlier months isn't doing the same for July.  No big problem, because I use NWC2 as my easy way to the forum and was coming here anyway, but it seems to be a minor bug.

Tips & Tricks / Multi-bar rests - easier and improved spacing printing
For years, I have been creating multi-bar rests with user font Boxmark2, laid over top of hidden rests.  I've always had a problem with the symbol spilling over the next visible bar line in print preview and when printing.

I'm now using muted, no-head notes with zero length stems as spacers in the bar where the gylphs are placed, and if the rest is quite long, I also pad the preceding and succeeding bars within the rest too.  So far it seems to work fairly well.

In this example, Userfont5 is Swingdings, still in beta testing by its creator, another member of this forum, however, you can still get an idea of what I mean about the spacing being ok here:

General Discussion / Crash
I'm now using NWC2 Beta 1 Update 1, but it just crashed.  It's more likely to be my system than NWC2, but I thought I should post the info in case it needs to be looked into.

I was copying sections of one staff to another.  NWC2 gave an error message something like Virtual System Called, then NWC2 crashed.

The copied section was 10 bars of headless stemless notes, some text, and some hidden bar lines and hidden rests, a 10 bar mulitbar rest.  The score is 18 staffs x 119 bars.  I'm using LP's versions of the standard fonts.

It may be a memory problem, because I had done probably 20 of 30 edits since the previous save, and I had 4 or 5 other programs running in the foreground.

System - Windows XP Professional on a pc clone, Monitor = 19" flat screen.

General Discussion / Comping slashes
I think I've finally found a decent solution to comping slashes.  Insert headless notes with stem length zero and then use the lyric editor.

Your lyric is simply a number of / marks.  You might want to change the page setup/fonts so that lyrics are in a good, solid font to do this, but I just used Times New Roman 14 Bold Italic.

The lyric should have a vertical offset sufficient to place the / in the middle of the staff.

The staff in this example, vertical upper size 18, lower 10.

The music notation:

One lyric line Alignment Top, vertical offset 14

To enter chord symbols, use a layered staff, with the names of the chords as lyrics, anchored to headless, stemless & muted notes.

The two staffs should work well together (except the designated Staff Lyric font might not look good as a chord symbol)

General Discussion / Audit Bar Lines and pickup bars
NWC user Josh sent me some of his compositions for comment.  In one, he forced a syncopation by adding rests to the beginning of some staffs, creating unequal pickup bar lengths, like this:

|Text|Text:"ALL TREBLE"|Font:PageText|Pos:-14|Color:1
|TimeSig|Signature:4/4

|Note|Dur:Half|Pos:-6
|Note|Dur:Half|Pos:-2

|Note|Dur:Half|Pos:1
|Note|Dur:Half|Pos:5

The result was a good song for playback, but for display, misaligned bar lines and misaligned beats.

I couldn't make audit bar lines correct for this.  It seems that it won't correct pickup bars.  Have others noticed this behaviour?

It would be nice if there were an option to audit or ignore the pickup bar.

Tips & Tricks / Keeping track of where you are
The measure count is a handy feature, but when you are far into a score, it's sometimes easier to have a visible count from the preceding rehearsal letter, particularly when determining where to place system breaks when you have repetitive bars.

I use a separate staff with text-based numbers in each bar.  Each bar consists of hidden rests with a text-entry number from 1 to n (n is the number of bars in each section).

Usually each section will be a standard length, after the intro.  Create the first n bars, finish the n-th bar with a double bar line, then just copy/paste the section until you have enough to carry you through the job.

Display while editing and previewing, hide when printing.

Tips & Tricks / Transcribing Divisi Parts
If you want the top line notes on the staff to have flags up and the bottom line to have flags down - it's easy.  Enter the bottom note first, with the flag down toggle on (shift and down arrow).  When you enter the top part, toggle the flag up before you enter the note (I have to press shift and up twice to make this work).  Presto! both divisi lines (i.e. duet) can be printed on a single staff chart.

Oh, yeah, to enter the top note, do the same as you would when entering a second note of a chord - use Control Enter.

Tips & Tricks / Entering Multi-bar Rests
Entering multi-bar rests in single staff charts: use Insert Text

  • The first bit of text to enter is a few blank spaces (just press the space bar 5 or ten times), preserve width, and click "OK"
  • Insert Text again and hit the space bar about 10 times about 20 times, type the number of bars the rest should last. Under the Expression Placement tab, select DO NOT preserve width, staff position 2, OK.
  • Insert Text a third time, use the pipe symbol "|", 19 equal signs "=", and the pipe symbol again, preserve width, staff position 0, OK.
  • Repeat step 1.
  • Press tab to give you the bar line at the end of the measure.
This should give you an entire bar that you can then copy as often as you like throughout the piece.  This only inserts a printed multibar rest - the program won't count it as more than one bar, so you shouldn't use it if you are using the bar numbering feature, and you shouldn't use it if you're printing full scores or piano scores.
