General Discussion / Re: New instruments
Noteworthy does not have any instruments. All it does is send MIDI instructions to your sound card which then creates the noises you hear.

If the trombone sounds awful then it is the fault of the sound card, and nothing to do with NWC.

General Discussion / Re: Drums
It is possible to get the look and feel at the same time. Just put each instrument on a separate staff, correctly notated but with the staff transposed to the required pitch on channel 10. Then layer them.

General Discussion / Re: Flow Control
No, the two notes at the same pitch was just a coincidence. I really was trying to illustrate a point about slurs.

The crotchet in the First Time bar is slurred, but it doesn't show. It ought to appear as a hanging slur back to the Master Repeat Open bar.

General Discussion / Re: Sharping Multiple Notes in Chord
Noteworthy doesn't allow two notes at the same vertical position to be in a chord

That's not true. You can chord a B natural with a B flat, and although it isn't displayed properly - it looks like two B flats - it does play correctly.

General Discussion / Re: Breve
Yes, that's possible. So a single breve in a bar takes the length of the time signature and is centred in the bar. But if it is combined with any other notes then it takes its logical duration and is positioned as an ordinary note.
413
General Discussion / Re: Breve
I don't believe that for a moment! A breve should play for its proper length. If you want to include a different performance then use the following technique which can shorten or lengthen the bar appropriately, and even space the lyrics properly.

General Discussion / Re: Wheel mouse feature
Mine works fine in V2, although I've never actually used it.

And clicking the wheel brings up a hybrid Staff/Options menu which was a bit unexpected!

General Discussion / Re: articulations, emphasis
Absolutely.

But in fact the whole family of accents (>, ^, ¯, •) and literal accents (sf, fz, sfz) need to be implemented properly, together with a combined tenuto/staccato.

And the literals need to be embedded in the native font, in the same way as dynamics are.

General Discussion / Re: American Tune
There are many translations of the original German O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, actually translated by by P Gerhardt from the even more original Latin Salve caput cruentatum.

The tune is by H.L. Hassler (1564-1612) considerably before Bach's time. Bach harmonised it.

Interestingly, the link above gives a slightly different arrangement of the harmony to that which I know. That version can be found at

http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/o/s/osacredh.htm

together with a more detailed history.

General Discussion / Re: Descant
D J's approach sort of works, but the note chase is all wrong.

A much more stylish method is to insert a 2nd Time Special Ending at the start of the descant staff, and then tack on a hidden extra bar (just before the Master Repeat Close) which consists of a 1st Time Special Ending, Local Repeat Open, Whole Note Rest, and Local Repeat Close with the length of the piece as the repeat count. That's the basic idea anyway: each piece probably needs its own special treatment.

Using multiple 1st and 2nd time special endings also works for variations in repeat playback - which I'd be happy to elucidate - but the essential idea is that you can put them anywhere within the loop.

General Discussion / Re: Multiple measures of rest
It's more for large orchestral scores. Staff suppression when printing the full score; multi-bar rests for printing the individual parts.

BTW, my proposed scheme needs a small modification. Multi-bar rests need to be split at rehearsal letters, time signatures  and tempo changes. So instead of marking bar-lines as suggested, it would be better to mark the bar-lines that are actually going to be suppressed.
422
General Discussion / Re: inverted fermata
I'd thought about that but come to the conclusion that it could never be correct, or even occur in a practical situation. And Marco's example of a Bach Chorale would never have a note that high in any case.

The stem-up implies an upper part and the Pause should therefore be above the note in that part. Putting it below would apply it to the (presumed) lower part.

And if it is not an upper part then the stem should be down and the Pause should still be above it.

Still, if someone wants it differently, and it's not too difficult to implement, then why not?

General Discussion / Re: inverted fermata
I think there is a misundersdtanding here. It is the position of the Fermata, not the Note that determines invertedness. If it is above the stave then it should be the right way up; below, inverted. And that is what NWC does.

General Discussion / Re: problem with waltzes
No, the rest must always be inserted first. I f you are inserting two notes then the order does not matter.

In fact, in any case, the rest cannot be longer than the note (why this is so totally baffles me, but there we are). And it takes some trickery to make it actually equal to the note.
426
General Discussion / Re: Multiple measures of rest
I believe they do. And although making it happen automatically would be very tricky, it is easy enough to formulate a user specified method for staff suppression and for multi-bar rests.

For staff suppression simply specify as a property of each bar line that the following measure must/need not be printed.  If all the bars of a staff in a particular system need not be printed then suppress the staff (even if it actually contains printable symbols other than rests - that's up to the user to sort out).

For multi-measure rests specify another property of the bar line to say that the following bar should be printed as such, collected together with any other similarly marked contiguous bars. Again it wouldn't matter what was actually inside the bar itself!

And a third bar line property, whilst we're on the subject, is one to increment the bar count (and hence the printed measure number), default of one but any other figure could be inserted.

General Discussion / Re: Version 2 rest and notes together
Select staff (or part thereof) in NWC2.
Control+C.
Control+V into Notepad or Forum Message or whatever.
Couldn't be simpler!

As to the full spec, just put an example of what you want into NWC2, then cut and paste it as above.

General Discussion / Re: Addition of Functioning Breve (Double Whole Notes)
Strangely, yes, the sound could be different. The breve is used as a chanting note of indefinite length, whereas the duration of two tied semibreves would be quite explicit.

But mainly it is the aesthetics of it all. For instance you wouldn't use two tied minims where the score needs a semibreve.

General Discussion / Re: Welcome to the NoteWorthy Composer 2 Forum
Quoting from the announcement:

Just as we did with the original NoteWorthy Composer Version 1 product, NoteWorthy Composer Version 2 is undergoing an extensive development cycle before it is targeted for general release.

I think that suggests there is more to come. I do hope so, there are still quite a few fundamental errors and ommissions. And there's nothing wrong with pointing them out. NW is of course perfectly entitled to ignore such suggestions, but far better to have them aired in public.
433
General Discussion / Re: Version 2 rest and notes together
I know - it's a technique which I have suggested in the past, but apart from being klunky, there's no white highlight colour. And if you change one of the other highlights to white then the file is only usable on your machine. And not even then in the Player.

And a bug is a definite fault, a glitch is more an inconvenience. In this case the behaviour is understandable and consistent, but on reflection, since the notation is actually not interpreted correctly by NWC, it is a real bug.
435
General Discussion / Re: Version 2 rest and notes together
David, I'm not that stupid!

The first reason is to fix a glitch (it's not really a bug). When you chord a tail down crotchet (1/4) with a  tail up quaver (1/8) then follow it with a tail up crotchet and then a tail down quaver then the combined lengths of those notes should be three quavers, but NWC makes it four. The work round is to chord the second crotchet with a quaver rest, and then the final quaver assumes its rightful position. But you can't hide the rest, and musically it is quite incorrect.

The second reason is that you can notate an in line trill. Insert a leading grace note (or notes)(visible or not according to choice) and then the visible long note chorded with a rest equal in length to the leading grace notes. Then follow it with the rest of the trill in invisible notes. But again the rest needs to be hidden.

And I'm not trying to print invisible notes. I was simply asking how you can find a headless note in a chord, or a headless semibreve anywhere. They don't show up in the editor. I think they should appear as they do in the icon bar.
437
General Discussion / Re: Version 2 rest and notes together
Sadly, the long rest doesn't actually work properly (not that I had a use for such a bizarre combination) since the software assumes that the note is still longer than the rest, so any subsequent notes follow the rest duration rather than the shorter duration.

That just leaves me asking (again) for the ability to insert rests longer than notes in a chord. And, by the by, to make them invisible, as we can now do with note heads in a chord.

As a by-product of this investigation I realised that the treatment of rests using control/shift/up allows improper positioning of rests (indeed, the original point of this thread). If you shift a chord with a rest then only on every second shift should the rest move (and strictly that should be the case on standalone rests too - although there it is in the user's hands to get it right).

As to invisible noteheads - how on earth do you spot them in a chord? They really should leave some sort of trace.
438
General Discussion / Re: Version 2 rest and notes together
It also misplaces a semibreve rest chorded with a dotted semibreve.

And in passing, another strange quirk. If you take that combination and click the dot icon then the rest becomes dotted too. But clicking it again just undots the rest. If you do this with two chorded notes then it will either dot or undot both notes.

And amazingly, if you use the double dot icon then you can get a double dotted semibreve rest chorded with a dotted semibreve. In other words the rest is longer than the note!

General Discussion / Re: copy to other programmes
There are at least two ways of doing this.

  • Use Edit/Copy Special and Paste. This seems to copy the whole staff so you might have to select the bit you want and put it on a staff on its own.
  • Use Print Preview/Copy/Placeable metafile. This creates a .WMF file that can be inserted into PowerPoint.
444
General Discussion / Re: Multiple notes with different lengths in one staff
The short answer is , you can't. But you have three work-rounds:

  • Split the middle 1/8th into tied 1/16ths and chord the lower 1/16th with the second one.
  • Chord the middle 1/8th with a 1/16th rest and tippex(white) it out.
  • Use layering
None of these is ideal. The first is notationally incorrect, or at least non-standard. The second is a pain and downright ugly. The third is a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but is the official NWC method!

General Discussion / Re: 1812 Overture
Tchaikovsky was only born 25 years after the war finished! And the piece was written 68 years after the retreat from Moscow. Whatever his feelings about war in general, he certainly wouldn't be too influenced personally by the Napoleonic Wars. He might have been influenced by the Crimean War as a teenager, but I doubt it. The nineteenth century was (from 1815 onwards) on the whole actually quite peaceful compared to other centuries.

General Discussion / Re: Cap Accents
No, unfortunately the hat is not available. What is very curious is that the sign (^) is in the Noteworthy font, but just not used. Definitely a Wish List item, and, I would assume, pretty trivial to implement!

General Discussion / Re: Changes in number of staff lines
The lower staff sits on top when you print. You don't need to worry about priority since you can leave the single line staff on top and just blank out the five line staff when you don't want that one to appear.
450
General Discussion / Re: Tie
Well that's not strictly true. If you do everything on the same MIDI channel then probably (depends on your sound card) that's what happens. But you can always use layering (that wonderful universal panacea) to separate out the held note from the twiddles. Just make sure the layered staffs are on different channels.
