General Discussion / Re: Noteworthy stops responding to 1, 2, 3, etc., keypresses to change note duration
If I type an X to enter a text element, then the numeric keys act as normal and the keys activate the correct characters.

This sounds like Alt has been pressed and the focus is now in the Windows title bar control section. When you press X, you might be activating the shortcut for maximize, which then returns the focus back to NWC. If this is correct, the easiest way to figure this out is by using the arrow keys to see if the focus moves around in the window frame and/or opens the Windows control menus.

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer Version 2.5.6a Now Available
This release has been updated to version 2.5.6a to correct a bug in the Mute List tool. The Viewer's Mute List can only be used to mute parts that normally would be played. The tool cannot be used to reverse a mute instruction assigned by the original author of the file.

When parts are muted, the file title in the Viewer has an asterisk in front of its name. This is intended to give a visual hint that the Mute List tool has been applied to the file.

General Discussion / Re: lyrics paste doesn't work
Someone (perhaps the same person) asked about this issue on Facebook. In that case, the situation resolved itself after a Windows update. Perhaps a simple system restart would fix it as well.

General Discussion / Re: Sound of slow brushes
Have you listened to the Drumref sample? It gives you an idea of the standard sounds available to you. You can use Tools, Staff Play to  listen to each staff separately.

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta [Concluded, Release Available]
This mechanism prevents the overwrite of any user created font alternates. The log message indicates that the default fonts.ini (that contains comments) was not installed. It is a normal indicator in the install log when upgrading an existing program that already contains the fonts folder.

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 3
Beta 3 is now available. It includes the following changes/additions:

  • The NWC2STDA is no longer installed as a system font. However, the system font will be upgraded, if necessary, when it is already found in the system.
  • More included fonts: Boxmark2, Hairpin Dynamics, and NWC Extra Ornaments v3
  • When the system does not contain Boxmarks or Crescendo fonts, they will be mapped to Boxmark2 and Hairpin Dynamics as needed.

General Discussion / Re: Accidental Notes
You can force an accidental just by adding it to the note. It will display without the need for a grace note. The grace note helps when auditing accidentals.

If you do not need the audit tool, a true courtesy accidental can be placed as text, as shown:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Text|Text:"(f)"|Font:StaffSymbols|Pos:3|Wide:Y
|Spacer|Width:50
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:3
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

So, your example:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Key|Signature:C|Tonic:C
|TimeSig|Signature:Common
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1
|Text|Text:"(e)"|Font:StaffSymbols|Pos:0|Wide:Y
|Spacer|Width:25
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:0
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-1
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:-2
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

General Discussion / Re: Note entry not playing properly?
AFAIK, this is the way the "Play notes on entry" feature has always been implemented. It does not try to set the play back context. If you have the "Play from" options set to be near the insertion point, then you can quickly update the play context by starting play back, then stopping it shortly after.

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 2
I just compared the two, and they are very close. Substituting Boxmark2 for a missing Boxmarks should not pose any problems when viewing a file, as far as I can tell.

Substituting MusikDingsSerif would generally be vastly better than the default substitution done by Windows, but the glyphs are a little smaller and spacing is different.
371
Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 2
Since this new Viewer detects missing fonts and issues an alert, then gives a way to seek further assistance, there is much more opportunity for users to track down a font when they need it. Still, given the rich tradition of Boxmarks, an automatic solution is still preferred, and is being pursued.

General Discussion / Re: Running NW on a Mac that dual boots Windows
You can use NoteWorthy Composer on a Mac using a variety of solutions. All of the following solutions have been confirmed to work reasonably well with NoteWorthy Composer. We recommend starting with the NoteWorthy Composer Demo or the NWC Viewer on your Mac before moving to the full version of NoteWorthy Composer.

Perhaps the simplest solution is to use Wine on the Mac. This solution does not require any additional software in order to use NoteWorthy Composer or the NWC Viewer. There are numerous application options for using Wine on Mac, including the following:

If you want the complete Windows experience, or you have other Windows software that you would like to use as well, then using a full copy of Windows might be a better option for you. The following solutions require the purchase of a Windows license in addition to the virtualization/booting software shown below:

NoteWorthy Composer Version 2.5 and the NWC Viewer Version 2.5 will work fine on an older version of Windows, such as Windows 2000. When working with a virtualized copy of Windows 2000, the system memory foot print can be dramatically reduced and still run NoteWorthy Composer smoothly.

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 2
Any time a boxmark(s/2) is used in a file, and the font is not found in the system, MusikDingsSerif could be used as a substitute.

Also looking into another option...

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 2
NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 2 is now available. Changes include:

  • The installer now automatically updates the list of fonts found in the Fonts folder
  • The fonts used by the current file are shown in Tools, Font Usage
  • The browser plug-in now supports the same dynamic font loading.
  • An alert is issued when a requested font could not be found
  • An alert is issued when a file uses more then one play back device

General Discussion / Re: User responsible for own backup
There is no guarantee that support will get you back up after a hard drive crash. If you are not planning to maintain backup protection from a hard drive crash, then the CD option is recommended for quickly getting things reinstalled.

General Discussion / Re: Transposing and Chord Names
The user tool for this is built into the starter kit. It is Andrew Purdam's "Transpose Chords (adp)." You can enter the same value as used with the built-in command, or other options as explained in its help text.

General Discussion / Re: Pedal handling error
Yes, this is a similar problem to the past tempo issues. Thanks for the report.

Note that the "Play from" has to be "insertion point" or further down in order to see this issue (from Tools, Options, Midi).

General Discussion / Re: Extra fonts in the NWC installation pack?
The approach has to be different for Composer, since the font has to be available to Composer before it can be used by someone creating the content. At the moment, installing the Pardy Pack is the easiest way to deal with this for those that edit/create NWC files.

Announcements / Re: NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta 1
Question -  If I add fonts to the Fonts folder and the ini file, does this allow me to do this with other fonts to save my system resources. (Most people will not want to do this, but I might because of the Scripto files).

Yes. The installer will not currently respect custom additions when the NWC Viewer is reinstalled over itself, but this should be improved in the next beta. This would allow additional fonts to be installed to the Viewer's program files just as you describe.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Multi Bar Rests
Just an update to things discussed here:

Multi-measure Rests were added in NWC Version 2.5.

The Pardy Pack fonts are bundled into the NWC Viewer Version 2.5.5.

Announcements / NWC Viewer 2.5.5 Beta [Concluded, Release Available]
NoteWorthy Composer Viewer Version 2.5.5 includes Lawrie Pardy's Font Pack and several other legacy user fonts.

Details:
A mechanism for dynamically loading various user fonts, as well as the main notation font, is now included in the Viewer program. The fonts are not added to the main system font catalog, but rather are loaded only when used by the target song file. This allows the NWC Viewer to provide access to many fonts with minimal impact on the overall system.

The following fonts will be available for all users of NWC Viewer 2.5.5: NWC2STDA, NWCV15, Boxmark2, Hairpin Dynamics, NWC Extra Ornaments v3, MusikChordSans, MusikChordSerif, MusikDingsSans, MusikDingsSerif, MusikTextEuroSans, MusikTextEuroSerif, MusikTextSans, MusikTextSerif, NWC2MusikDingsSans, NWC2MusikDingsSerif, NWC2SwingDings, SwingChord, SwingDings, SwingText, and SwingTextEuro. In addition, Crescendo and Boxmarks will be automatically converted to suitable alternates if they are not found on the user system.

Operating System Requirements:
Windows 2000/Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7/8

The beta installer is attached.
The latest NWC Viewer download is available here:

General Discussion / Re: Start/Stop command question
NoteWorthy Composer Version 2.5.5 includes changes to the MIDI Reset performed by the Stop command when nothing is playing. If the MIDI Reset was the cause of your problems, these changes should help.

General Discussion / Re: Problem opening nwc file edited in 2.5.4. when opened from website
Adding a .htaccess file is often something you can do yourself, especially if your host is allowing you to script your web site with PHP. Are you sure that they are blocking you from using .htaccess?

You can also solve this from PHP, but it is not as elegant. Here is a simple (untested) function that might give you some ideas:

Code: (php) [Select · Download]
function DownloadNWCFile($fname)
{
Header("Content-Type: application/x-nwc",true);
Header("Accept-Ranges: none",true);
Header("Content-Length: ".filesize($fname));
readfile($fname);
exit;
}

General Discussion / Re: Problem opening nwc file edited in 2.5.4. when opened from website
It looks like the web site is not sending the correct MIME type for *.nwc files. This is explained in more detail here:

FAQ - Adding *.nwc files to your web site
http://ntworthy.com/composer/faq/94.htm

Since your site is using Apache, you should be able to solve the problem using an .htaccess file, as explained in that page. The changing behavior from IE is probably due to its download cache.

General Discussion / Re: Viewer 2.5.4 "Open in NWC version 2" not working
The entry existed but, pointed to a USB drive (E:) that is not present. No mystery here, a few months ago I was experimenting with installing old versions to a USB stick.

This explains why the Viewer did not restore your NWC2 *.nwc associations. The nwc2.exe program must exist in the folder indicated by the Add/Remove entries.

Not on my system. The verbs for 'nwcomposer' and 'nwctxtFile' are:
  • open
  • play
  • view
In any case, the Information popup indicates the wrong verb.

It indicates the correct verb as you would see it in Windows Explorer. Internally, the verb is nwc2, as stated previously.

The Viewer actually tries several things when sending to NWC2. It first attempts to use the shell with the nwc2 action. If that fails, it looks for a running instance of NWC2. If not found, it manually looks up the location for NWC2 via its Add/Remove registry setting.
396
General Discussion / Re: Viewer 2.5.4 "Open in NWC version 2" not working
The verb name in the registry is actually nwc2.

The NWC Viewer installer will recreate the *.nwc file associations directed at nwc2.exe if NWC2 is installed and its Add/Remove entry still exists in the registry. You can confirm this by looking at the Viewer install log, which will show something like this:

Setting NWC 2 Associations (C:\Program Files\Noteworthy Software\NoteWorthy Composer 2)

General Discussion / Re: Deleting tempo
The expression anchor is the key to working with objects that do not preserve width. You can also quickly select the nearest tempo by moving before the item, and using Ctrl+F, which is Edit->Find. In the Find box, enter "|Tempo" without the quotes. This will then select the next tempo found. You can then press Delete to remove it, or Edit->Properties to adjust it.
