Announcements / Forum just restored from backup
During this process, we had a little double encoding accident, which required restoring the forum from backup. I had to manually restore the last few posts, so there might be a little quirkiness with these few posts.

Everything should be good now.
306
Announcements / Forum converted to utf-8 encoding
The forum has officially been converted to use utf-8 encoding. This should make the exchange of new NWC 2.75 notation clips via the BBC CODE tags work correctly and consistently for all.

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.75 Beta Preview 2
A Preview 2 set is now available. Changes include better support for Expression Placement micro-positioning, Lua scripts now fully support utf-8 encoding in prompts and msgbox functions, and User Tool results are now rendered as utf-8 encoded text.

General Discussion / Re: Lyric Syllables Extend Past Bar Lines
Rick covered most of this, but I wanted to add a little.

I know I can prefix the refrain lyrics with underscores

Using underscores for lyric padding is no longer a recommended technique. The spacer is now the recommended technique for adding padding where you need it (or in some cases, to reduce padding). You can add it quickly using the Insert key.

Do you have a lot of incidents of lyric syllables spanning the next bar line? If you have examples of this, it wouldn't hurt to provide links so they can be reviewed.

General Discussion / Re: Song templates in 2.51
In 2.51, you cannot override the template location. However, the Browse feature allows you to manually select any NWC file for use as a template. If you have created a set of templates, it is recommended that you place these in a folder within your NoteWorthy Composer "Song Files" folder. This makes them easier to select after engaging the Browse button.

Announcements / Version 2.51a Released for NWC and the Viewer
Both NWC and the NWC Viewer have been updated to Version 2.51a. Full details of this upgrade can be found in the NWC Blog. A basic explanation of how to upgrade to this new version is summarized below:

  • You can upgrade your currently installed copy of NoteWorthy Composer 2.51 by opening it, then selecting the Access NoteworthySoftware.com command in the Help menu.  You will automatically be directed to the page where you can download and install the NoteWorthy Composer 2.51a upgrade.

  • The latest Viewer can be downloaded from the NoteWorthy Composer Viewer page.

General Discussion / Re: Cursor shape changing & F6 message
The F6 prompt is necessary because some MIDI drivers crash when flooded with a large number of note off messages. The message serves as a warning before NWC takes this step.

Also, the mouse cursors are not user configurable, so I don't think there is any way to change the way it works.
318
General Discussion / Re: Unread posts in forum icons
The icons changed as a part of prep work for upgrading to SMF 2. I modified the primary folder icon today so that it is more easily differentiated with the no new posts icon.

General Discussion / Re: HUGE difference between 17 and 18 in staff metrics
Well, it looks like I was wrong. On my first test system, both of your e-mailed files fit on two printed pages. Perhaps it really is your printer.

You might want to consider printing to an intermediate software PDF capture device, such as PDF Creator. It might help with resolution problems that seem to be caused by your printer.
322
General Discussion / Re: HUGE difference between 17 and 18 in staff metrics
I wonder if my issues have anything to do with that.

Probably not. It is probably just the nature of the file that you are printing. Is it a single staff, or multi-staff? In a multi-staff arrangement, a single point change accumulates over each staff in the system. It can make a substantial difference. The shifting system break locations can also significantly alter the number of pages needed for printing. You probably need to look closer at what is happening in your arrangement as you increase the printed notation size.

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.51 [Testing Concluded, Release Available]
NWC 2.51 is now available.

If you are a currently licensed user of NoteWorthy Composer 2.5, you may upgrade your currently installed copy of NoteWorthy Composer 2.5 at no additional charge. From within NoteWorthy Composer 2.5, select the Access NoteworthySoftware.com command in the Help menu. You will automatically be directed to the page where you can download and install the NoteWorthy Composer 2.51 upgrade.

It is recommended that you uninstall the NWC 2.51 test files by using the Uninstall command in the test edition's Help menu.
325
General Discussion / Re: HUGE difference between 17 and 18 in staff metrics
It would help if you posted your actual file.

In general, you have much more control over system and page alignment in NWC2. You can force system/page breaks, add spacers to exactly control how adjacent notes are spaced, and add Boundary Changes which can dynamically adjust the height requirements for any staff in each system.
326
General Discussion / Re: Very small problem with grace notes
A very small problem - but I haven't found a way round it and it doesn't happen in 1.75.

In 2.51, grace slurs will be allowed to pass through a bar line to meet a target note.

Note that in version 1, there is only a single slur type, so grace notes could start a slur that spanned across many non-grace notes. This isn't possible in version 2, as grace notes have their own slur system. The version 1 and 2 slur systems are not compatible.
327
Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.51 RC 1
NWC 2.51 RC 1 is now attached at the start of this topic.

RC 1:

  • reverses the default for the MMR "Show Only Once" option
  • ignores text expressions set as Visibility=Never in selectors
  • normalizes multiple item selector inserts to the current insertion point position

General Discussion / Re: NWC 2.5 running on Windows 8.1 (preview)
Maybe the restart of my computer had helped me?

Yes, a restart will often help with problems of a blank editor screen, or when the main NWC font is not showing up.

It does not recognize files that I have created from my older lap top.  It says that "this file failed to open. it either does not exist or may be corrupt".  A couple files were opened, but the majority bring this message.
Is there something I need to do?

Based on your e-mails, this is caused by the file names containing one or more Unicode characters that cannot be converted to the current ANSI character set. You might be able to improve this situation by updating your language settings: In Windows 8, goto:

Control Panel -- Clock, Language, and Region -- Change Location -- Administrative tab -- Language for non-Unicode programs

This setting is best when it matches the character set used by your file names.

We are working to improve this situation in the 2.5 series by adding conversion support for files that are drag-and-dropped onto the main NWC program window. We will be releasing a beta of this function into the Back Stage area soon.

Moving forward, we will be solving this issue completely in a future release of NWC 3.0. We have not yet announced any availability schedule for the 3.0 release.

General Discussion / Re: Got it, at last!
It is possible that NoteWorthy did not cause the bug.

True, but an older version of NWC is likely to be the original culprit. I don't think there are any current issues with NWC that can cause this.

I will look into the file open/load mechanism again to see if this can be fixed in NWC 2.51 (and its companion Viewer).

Announcements / NWC Viewer 2.51 [Testing Concluded, Release Available]

General Discussion / Re: PHP Version
There are no plans to upgrade the PHP binaries used in the NWC PHP Starter Kit. PHP  security issues are for servers using PHP based content delivery to clients. They are not relevant in the NWC context, as basically any PHP script that you run using NWC already has full access to your system.

User Tools / Re: Problem with obj_NWC2PlayContext.inc (5,258 byte version)
David, Lua is the official built-in scripting language for NWC going forward, starting in 2.51.

The discussion here is about specific bugs in the PHP based NWC User Tool Starter Kit. The next full release will have all of this fixed once it is installed. The github links are the view into the kitchen, showing how the update is made. It will not be needed at general release.

The following clip seems like a good test case:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Chord|Dur:4th|Pos:-1,n1|Opts:Stem=Up|Dur2:Half|Pos2:b-6

|Chord|Dur:4th|Pos:-1,b1|Opts:Stem=Up|Dur2:Half|Pos2:n-6
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Up
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

Before the fix, the note names tool generates this:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Clef|Type:Treble
|Text|Text:"AC,Cb"|Font:User1|Pos:10|Wide:Y|Justify:Center|Placement:AtNextNote

|Text|Text:"Cb"|Font:User1|Pos:10|Wide:Y|Justify:Center|Placement:AtNextNote
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Up

|Text|Text:"C"|Font:User1|Pos:10|Wide:Y|Justify:Center|Placement:AtNextNote
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Up
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

After the fix, the note names tool generates this, which accurately depicts how NWC would perform it:

General Discussion / Re: Need Assistance
As Warren mentioned in his now deleted post (we seem to be posting at the same time), there is also a user tool that helps with the play back of these. You need the User Tool starter kit:

NoteWorthy Composer 2 User Tools
http://ntworthy.com/nwc2/usertools/

Once installed, look in .Starter Tools -> Arpeggiate
340
General Discussion / Re: Need Assistance
This is an arpeggio. NWC does not have built-in support for this, but the look can be achieved using the Pardy Pack fonts:

Lawrie Pardy's Font Pack for NoteWorthy Composer
http://ntworthy.com/uc/pardypack/

Example:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposer(2.5)

|PgSetup|StaffSize:16|Zoom:9|TitlePage:Y|JustifyVertically:Y|PrintSystemSepMark:N|ExtendLastSystem:N|DurationPadding:Y|PageNumbers:0|StaffLabels:None|BarNumbers:None|StartingBar:1

General Discussion / Re: browser plugin
I just revisited this issue again, and I am still unable to reproduce it. After the NWC Viewer is installed with the Browser Plugin enabled, you should be able to see the NWC plugin in Chrome from:

Settings, Show advanced settings..., Privacy, Content settings..., Plug-ins, Disable individual plug-ins...

- or -

[html]chrome://plugins/[/html]

I have attached what I currently see here. I see something similar on Windows 7 64-bit with Chrome, except the install location is different.

Note: In chrome, you can right click the above link, copy it, then paste it into the address bar to quickly navigate to the Chrome Settings plugins area.

General Discussion / Re: My NWC files can't be found outside of NWC
Glad you got it sorted out. You might want to track down all of your NWC files, and them copy them into your primary NWC documents folder for future use.

In general, it is a good idea to maintain a dedicated user folder for *.nwc files, and make sure that you have a backup system in place to protect against any future hard drive or computer hardware failure.

From within the program, Tools, Options, Folders is a good place to start.
