General Discussion / Re: I need help.
Asking a question over and over will not improve the help that you get. It is, however, likely to make people less interested in helping you.

The basic fact is if you want to publish content on the web, you are going to have to either:

  • learn HTML and/or other Internet publishing standards, or
  • use an HTML editor to do most of the work for you, or
  • hire someone else to do it for you
Responses to this question should be addressed to https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=2491.

General Discussion / Re: A funny thing happened on the way to the forum
>old HTML pages are back

The links may use *.htm, but they are not the old pages.

>I just find it more useful to have the forum open sorted by most-recently-posted

Point taken. We are trying to strike a balance between search engine needs and user needs. The forum will now be shown sorted by most recent activity if you have established your identity from the help page.

General Discussion / Re: Adding Harmonic Notes to Triplets
Upon review, it is clear that NWC should allow you to add chord members to a triplet note when you have selected the same stem direction as the note in the triplet, and the duration is otherwise identical. This new behavior will exist as of the next NWC 1.75 update.

General Discussion / Re: Midi add new instrument disabled
This button is used to associate an IDF (Instrument Definition) file with a MIDI port. Perhaps your computer does not have hardware installed that Windows recognizes as eligible for Instrument Definition selection.

General Discussion / Re: Sound Problems
Did you check the Windows Volume/Mixer settings? If not, then that is the first thing you should do.

If you are not sure what this is, then select Start | Run, and type in:

Sndvol32.exe

and press Enter. The mixer will appear.

General Discussion / Re: Shave and a Haircut...
The snippet on the home page is neither meant to be an original composition, nor an exact reproduction of an existing musical work. It is the manifestation of a quickly prepared banner, without adequate advance planning as to its content. We have really enjoyed reading all of the feedback that we have received on the subject. Not all agree on the exact nature of how it should be changed, but all agree that it should be changed.

We are preparing a new banner which should appear in the not too distant future. It will not include this snippet.

General Discussion / Re: Message preview
Usually, this is the kind of message you get when you press the Back button in your browser. After you are satisfied with the Preview, you then should press the form's Submit button, not the Browser's Back button.

General Discussion / Re: New look to Forum
For starters, if you like the old look, it is still available as classic style, which can be selected from the Style box.

The new primary format is meant to be easier to follow. Today's posts are first, then Yesterday's posts, and on back. The posts within each day are shown chronologically, starting with the first post of the day, and ending with the last, or most recent, post of the day.

General Discussion / Re: Browser plug-in
This is a function of the MCI sequencer. It is only providing timing to that resolution. In the future, we may start using the NWC play engine in the browser, which would resolve this.

General Discussion / Re: 12 String Guitar
You are not going to get NWC to actually play a guitar, but your sound card might support a 12 string sound patch (refer to its documentation to see if it does), which can be assigned from Staff Properties or the Insert | Instrument Patch command.

As for tuning, a Google search shows lots of pages to help, including this one.

General Discussion / Re: anyway I can convert MIDIs into mp3s or Waves
  • In your Windows Volume control, go to Options | Properties
  • click on Recording,
  • then make sure Midi is checked.
  • Press OK.

You are now looking at your Recording mixer, rather than play mixer.
  • Check Select under the MIDI column.

Slide the MIDI volume as necessary to get good results.
Your copy of MusicMatch may support direct selection of recording source (one of my newer copies has an Options | Recorder | Source menu for just this purpose). If it does, you should probably use what is provided in MusicMatch.

General Discussion / Re: New forum format
We just forgot about the !!- construct.

Ammendment on the scripto link:
The scripto link is intended to create a virtual place called the Scripto, which has web resources to which you can link. This virtual place now has a virtual "cgi-bin" which you can call directly, without specifying the /nwc/ component. If you want to link to a specific file, such as Fred's Frog Song, you can do so by scripto linking into this imaginary cgi-bin, as follows:

!scripto(Frog Song=/cgi-bin/txt2html.cgi?src=rock/frogsong.txt)

will show up as

Frog Song

General Discussion / Re: New forum format
The problem with this providing a !link(url) is that URLs can contain equal signs (=), which would make it impossible to discern the user's intent.

There are several new format constructs now available:

  • !b(text),!i(text),!bi(text)
These are shorter variants of the bold and italic format instruction.

  • !scripto(name=/path)
Used to link into the scripto, starting at the NWC root path. For example, !scripto(new at the scripto=/newstuff.html) is automatically made into the correct scripto link: new at the scripto

  • !usertip(nnn)
Adds a link to a user tip in the NoteWorthy Composer User Tips area

  • !nwcforum(nnn)
Another way to link to a NWC forum message. This way is preferred, as it will work in other dynamic author areas around the site.

General Discussion / Re: Print Preview Screen Size
Yes, the preview is another place where the mouse is needed.

The preview simply cannot be totally trusted for text alignment. As far as I can tell, this is because the text actually gets kerned by the display device when in preview. When you print, the text gets kerned by the print driver. Without literally "rolling our own" kerning routines, there seems to be no way around this in the NWC preview.

The PDF/PostScript preview approach, however, does yield better results in this area.

General Discussion / Re: Songwright to NWC?
The most likely way to achieve this is to convert the files to MIDI, then load them into NWC. The results generally won't be perfect, though, and your mileage may vary.

If they are not too large, sometimes it is better to just re-enter them in the new program, although I know how painful it can be to feel like you are re-doing the work.

General Discussion / Re: Print Preview Screen Size
The only thing that I can think of in NWC that requires the mouse is the Quick Entry (aka Insert) toolbar (which is, by its nature, a mouse driven feature). Everything else can be done from the keyboard. The Page Setup Contents can be adjusted using the arrow keys, the tab key, and the space bar for selection/deselection.

General Discussion / Re: divisi parts - stems up/stems down
I would suspect that it is neither case.

"Is this a programming glitch"

I just tried it, and it works as expected.

or just something peculiar to my copy?

Very unlikely, almost impossible, since I assume your copy is working.

What exactly are you doing? In other words, just what kind of note are you highlighting?

General Discussion / Re: Pasting to Word Documents
We have Windows 95 OSR 2 and Windows 3.1 setup on an iMac 266 with OS 9/Virtual PC 4, and it works quite well overall, especially with NWC (NWC does not slow down very much in this configuration, unlike some other programs). The MIDI drivers leave something to be desired, though.

We did upgrade the memory, which was a bit of an adventure.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Need NWCV17.ttf
This error states the wrong TTF name. It should say NWCV15.TTF. If you get this error after installing NWC, try rebooting and see if the error clears up. If not, you can manually install this font from the NoteWorthy Composer program files.

General Discussion / Re: MIDI Input Keyboard and Windows XP
Here are a few things to think about:

  • If you upgraded the existing computer to XP, then you need to install the correct driver for your external MIDI hardware, assuming that there are XP drivers for your existing hardware (this is not always the case).
  • If you bought a new computer, you might need to update the drivers. It is also possible that your new system does not natively support external MIDI functions (this is has been happening fairly often lately in the low cost PC area where the sound card and joystick port are integrated into a cheap motherboard).
  • It is also possible that you simply have the in/out cables reversed (this is a very common cause of problems).
