Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Failed to install
The file "walz3_4.nwc" is the last file to be installed. After this, a series of system changes are made, although the status message is not updated. The following system changes are done, in order:

  • The uninstall string is placed in the registry

You can see if this was added by looking at Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

  • Optionally, the Start menu and desktop shortcuts are added

Simply look on your desktop and in your Start menu to see if these appear.

  • Optionally, the *.nwc file associations are established

Look in the program Samples folder using Windows Explorer. The *.nwc files in there should have their type specified as "NoteWorthy Composer Song".

  • Lastly, the NWCV15.TTF font is installed

Look in your Fonts folder to see if it was installed.
Look through this list and see which step was the first not to complete. This will let you know where the problem is happening. The most likely case is that the system is hanging on the font installation. I do not know why it would do this, but if this is the case, you can simply install the NWCV15.TTF font manually from the NWC program folder.

General Discussion / Re: my file will not open
There is not much we can do without seeing the file. Send it to support and then we can let you know if it is truly corrupted. If it is corrupted, it could very well be totally lost (keeping backups is very important).

General Discussion / Re: NWC being read as PDF files
Is your web site sending the correct MIME type for NWC?

Actually, I just checked, and here is what it is sending:

Content-Type: application/nwc

Technically, it should be sending application/x-nwc, but this should not necessarily cause the problem that you describe.

What might be happening is that this other person has installed Acrobat Reader, and it is improperly trying to open the NWC file in the Reader's plug-in. There are lots of past threads in discussion groups (not this one, but other support forums) where the Acrobat Reader browser plug-in has caused problems, especially back in the IE 5 and IE 5.5 timeframe. Perhaps your respondent is just another case of this.

General Discussion / Re: Duolet in 6/8 measures
In the latest release (1.75.7), any hidden notes in a beam do not get drawn. In this example, the 16th notes would not appear in the printout, so only the 8th note beam would show up.

General Discussion / Re: Thanks for removing that thread
I assume you are referring to the post that was asking a bunch of music questions. There has been an increasing trend lately for non-NWC users to ask the forum for answers to some kind of music test/homework. Although music discussion is generally permitted and even encouraged, an obvious dump of a list of test/homework questions into the forum will not be permitted.

General Discussion / Re: Error: GDI Failure
The key to this is that you had no problems until one suddenly develops. When something like this happens with any program, it is best to try things in the following progression:

  • First, try rebooting the machine. This involves a total power down of the computer, then powering it back on. This solves most problems where Windows has simply gone flaky.
  • If that fails, try uninstalling then reinstalling the program, although this rarely helps with NWC unless you have a file association problem or a hard drive that is starting to fail.
  • If that fails, you should perform diagnostics on your hard drive and other computer components, and think hard about what changed on the computer. If possible, isolate the problem or change that causes the problem and correct it.
  • If all else fails, you may have a corrupted Windows installation that needs to be repaired or reinstalled. Before performing this step, it would be nice if the exact cause of the corruption could be isolated (virus, hardware failure, software installation, etc.).

General Discussion / Re: Transposing
The short answer is Yes.

I'm not sure what kind of explanation you are looking for here. A semitone is half of a whole tone, and is the smallest interval change that can be notated in NWC. For example, the inetrval between A and Bb is one semitone. If you have a piece written for an A instrument and you want to transpose it for a Bb instrument, you would transpose down 1 semitone (since the Bb instrument actually sounds 1 semitone higher than the A instrument).

General Discussion / Re: Interesting error...
For the record, the help file is not updated during web updates, so this error is not corrected in the most recent 1.75 update (since a new help file is not actually released).

General Discussion / Re: Please help - Can't play any sound
This means that the driver would not allow NWC to open the device. Sometimes, this is because the device is in use by some other software, or you have selected it twice in NWC (which is done by simultaneously selecting the MIDI Mapper). Other times, it is because either you do not really have SB Live hardware, or the hardware is failing. In more detail:

  • If the SB Live is listed in the MIDI Mapper, and you have selected both the MIDI Mapper and the SB Live for use in NWC play back, then this is the cause of your problem. Don't do this.

  • If some other program is using the A:SB Live, then close the other program, or use some other device in NWC.

  • If you have a hardware or software driver problem, reinstall your SB Live drivers.

General Discussion / Re: Corrupt Installation Detected?!
The setup program needs write access to the temp folder for it to do anything. Perhaps this is what caused your problem.

Could you see the setup background when this error was displayed? Or, was it the only thing that was presented to you?

General Discussion / Re: About the product package...
Exactly. The "simultaneous use" means exactly that. If two computers in your house have NWC installed, but NWC is never used at the same time on both, then you are in conformance with the terms of the license. Your situation is certainly within the terms of the license. If your son moves out and takes a copy of NWC with him, then this goes beyond the scope of the license, and violates both the terms and spirit of the license.

General Discussion / Program Update: NoteWorthy Composer 1.75.6
NoteWorthy Composer Version 1.75 + Web Update 6 is now available. This newest update improves on import of MIDI files that do not have a conforming header at the very start of the file. It also adds better support for hiding notes in a beam, and beaming grace notes of differing duration.

See news headline #17 for full download details.

General Discussion / Re: About the product package...
I think Barry's post pretty much explains the NWC V1 license. You can legally install on two computers, provided you comply with the terms of the license (no simultaneous use).

General Discussion / Re: ACCIDENTALS
And if you are talking about the computer keyboard, you can see the keyboard shortcuts for accidentals right on the Notes menu, or by hovering the mouse over the accidental buttons on the toolbar.
2328
General Discussion / Re: ACCIDENTALS
The accidental is determined by:

  • The pitch of the note that you enter from the MIDI keyboard
  • The key signature of the current piece

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Browser plug in not working
OK. After applying all security updates on a Win 2000 box with the browser plug-in already installed, the behaviour of the browser did, in fact, change. Before the updates, a local NWC file could be drag and dropped onto the browser, and the file would appear in the browser using the NWC plug-in.

After the update, attempts to drag and drop a local NWC file onto an IE browser window:

  • first, issues a warning about the safety of opening files
  • then, opens the NWC file using the default Shell Open association, which in my case was setup to open in NWC
It appears as though, after applying the update, IE refuses to open a local copy of an NWC file in the browser using the plug-in.

However, on the thought that Microsoft may have messed up the registry somewhere during the security update, I then did the following:

  • I uninstalled NWC, NWP, and the browser plug-in
  • I rebooted the machine (this is very important)
  • I used regedit to make sure that all traces of the NWC file associations were gone (in my case, they were, but if you manually made some of your own, your case might differ)
  • I installed the latest copy of the NWC browser plug-in from our web site
Now, I can successfully drag and drop local NWC files onto an open IE browser window and they appear in the browser, using the NWC browser plug-in.

General Discussion / Re: Producing standard notation from imported existing performance
I think Bob was probably referring to the forum search, which shows as a Quick Search in the forum index, and as the search function included in the new message post form. It shows at least one thread that discussed this topic, along with this thread as well.

In short, NWC will not import your MP3 files. MP3 files are compressed digital audio files that represent samples of actual sound. Someone here on the forum once compared the process of turning MP3/WAV to NWC/MIDI to turning a cake back into its original ingredients. There are some tools that can convert simplistic audio samples to MIDI, but nothing that can do it for multi-instrument song samples (the likely scenario you are asking about).

For more details, use the forum search to look for "WAV to MIDI" and "MP3" search terms.

General Discussion / Re: Another MIDI interface question
I assume that any solution you try will cost you money. Since this is the case, I would recommend going with a newer port technology, where longer term driver support is more likely. Almost all new machines include USB ports. This would be a better interface to utilize for MIDI on newer machines, since it is likely to be supported better. I have seen USB MIDI Interfaces for about $70 US.

There are parallel port MIDI interfaces, if you really want to go this route. An example is the MIDIMAN Portman series.

General Discussion / Re: Del segno question
You are not going to be able to do 2 Dal Segno redirections in the same NWC piece. You can see an example Dal Segno contstruction in the REPEAT4.nwc sample. Your example seems better implemented as simple repeats, with verse two and three as endings to the refrain.
2339
General Discussion / Re: Flow direction with Coda
It sounds like you are trying to use special endings as controls in TO CODA redirection. It does not work this way. Your special endings are used to control the ending leading up to a Master Repeat Close, or a Section Close on the final ending. Each special ending should be finalized with one of these two bar types. See the REPEAT*.nwc samples for demos of how repeats are put together.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Browser plug in not working
Your link is just to a Microsoft Security Bulletin, specifically Flaw in Microsoft VM JDBC Classes Could Allow Code Execution. Again, no mention of something called Service Release 3. It did, however, point to Windows Update to get the patch. This is exactly where we updated our Windows XP machine with all of the latest security patches. The plug-in continues to work, with all security patches applied. I should also point out that a Microsoft patch to JDBC Classes is not in the realm of something that would impact the NWC plug-in.

I don't know what else to add. You still have not indicated your Windows and IE version, which might be of some use in discussing this further. The current plug-in works on all of our test systems, and we cannot fix that which is not broken, or at least not reproduceable.

General Discussion / Re: Recording
You can record with the evaluation. CoolEdit Pro is a digital audio application, so the fact that it works is not an indicator that your keyboard's MIDI setup is correct. These are different things.

You should first concentrate on making your MIDI keyboard work in step-time entry. Enable Tools|Midi Input Active, and then open a blank score. With NWC active, any notes that you press on the MIDI keyboard should show up on the active staff in NWC. If they do not show up, then you have some setup to do. There are lots of existing threads on this topic in this forum if you need help with this.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Browser plug in not working
From your e-mails into support, it is clear that the problem you are having is specifically with the opening of NWC files on your local computer using IE and the plug-in. I gather that you are able to view online (Internet) NWC files, such as those in our samples area.

I searched the Microsoft site and could not find anything titled Windows Service Release 3. Microsoft updates are confusing anyway, so perhaps you could elaborate on your system (exact Windows version, exact IE version).

Among the many other system configurations that we have tested, we have just completed a test of the plugin on Windows XP with all available updates applied. This system should represent the very latest Microsoft has to offer (current as of ten minutes ago). With the NWC plug-in installed, there is no problem dragging and dropping NWC files onto an open IE window. The browser accepts the file and shows it using the NWC browser plug-in.

Have you checked your security settings and other options? These are found in Tools|Internet Options|Security and Advanced tabs. Perhaps you have a setting that is messing your system up (there are options that can be made to break plug-ins).

General Discussion / Re: NWC 1.0
Francis, we will review your comments.

As for an old version: We have been playing with NoteWorthy 1.0 here in our labs. It looks like we may indeed be able to offer it in some fashion to registered users (after fixing up the help and wrapping it in a new installer). It has been kind of fun using it again, and it is oh so lean and efficient (although its 16-bit architecture limits it somewhat in the GUI, printing, and file system areas).
2348
General Discussion / Re: NWC 1.0
We might consider making an early version available for download to registered users, but really this only has curiosity value. The older versions discussed here are 16-bit only, and lack the years of development that have focused on correcting problems reported by users since they were released.
