General Discussion / Re: Export multiple midi files, one for each staff
   Hi, jonashogstrom.

I too key everything in using NWC, and then convert to Midi.  But then I use Midisoft Session - old versions were given out as Freebies back in DOS/3.1 days - to prepare the necessary emphasized voice Files (that way you can keep all the volume etc changes you put into the NWC Master).  Have a look at my Website - http://www.thehoopers.demon.co.uk - and you'll see what I mean.

You can then convert everything to WAV or MP3 using Synthfont.  It all works very well for me.

   MusicJohn, 3/Sep/08

Do you have the lyrics in your midi files?  There may by other midi players which can do it, but the VanBasco Player can show the lyrics such as here.  It has the ability to highlight parts, transpose, and make tempo changes.

General Discussion / Re: priorities
That list was an excellent compilation--thanks for doing it.

In line with differing numbers of staves in different systems in the same score, I would like to suggest an attribute for bar lines if not all objects of being collapasable:  usually applied to very long rests.  If all objects on a given part and a given staff had that attribute, that part would not be printed.  Some examples: no accompaniment during a capella passages, space saved when a solo is used in only part of a piece, and only the principal part would be shown during a cadenza.

A bar line with a "force system break" could also turn on or off layering for the next staff.  For SATB music, two pairs of layered staves could display all the parts during a chorale but later give each part its own line during a fugue.

General Discussion / Re: Lining up text vertically in front of a note
It is a solo--the 1st attachment shows what is actually played on the top staff (which will be hidden) and has an accidental G#.  I don't know if it will be the only staff displayed (there is a piano acc. now, perhaps an orchestra later), but it could be.  This staff will be muted and "increase spacing for longer notes" is checked.  I would try to avoid layers for this part if at all possible.

Your idea of putting the text in front of the previous note and experiment with leading spaces in the "text" seems to be just what I needed.  Many thanks for that idea.

If this was being sung I would agree with the breath mark being "silly notation".  As a violin part the down bow stops at the "breath mark" and continues down for the last 16th with the up bow being in the next measure.  While long slurs can indicate phrasing in violin music, a slur usually indicates "keep the bow moving in the same direction" or "put these notes all on one bow."

General Discussion / Re: Triplets, Quadruplets, Quintolets, Sextolets, Septolets, etc!
I'm sure you have seen this tip already.  Without seeing an attachment from you, I would guess the tempo before the xxx-tuplet and after it are not the same, e.g., you had half-note = xxx, but then had quarter-note = xxx following the whateverlet].

The calculation should be straightforward, to do pentuplets multiply by 5/4, for septuplets the factor is 7/4, for 11 to a beat use 11/8, etc.  The ratio of the two tempi you specified is 4/3 so you seem to want to divide a normally triplet beat (in 6/8, 9/8 for example) into 4 parts.  If so you probably had quarter-dotted = 120.  In that case quarter-dotted = 160 before your "sixteenth notes" and quarter-dotted = 120 afterwards.  Also, you would have 4 8th notes in a beat.  If you wanted real 16ths with 4 to a beat you would need to slow the tempo down to quarter-dotted = 80 and shorten notes played concurrently.

Tips & Tricks / Triplets v. Duples, 3/4 v. 9/8, Hiding "3" in triplets
It is possible to hide the 3 above triplets by changing the time signature to one that has triplets built in such as 6/8, 9/8, or 12/8.  All staves would be in this time signature, but it is possible to change for example, a 9/8 staff to appear to be in 3/4.  The following example is 3/4 - 9/8, but is applicable to 2/4 - 6/8 or 4/4 - 12/8, etc.
  • A 3/4 time signature (default visibility) would immediately be followed by a 9/8 which is hidden on a displayed staff. A 9/8 time signature (default visibility) by itself is OK on hidden staves.
  • On the played but hidden staff, all non-dotted non-triplet notes would need to be dotted.  Notes already dotted would be tied with a note with half the length of the original.  The triplet attribute would need to be removed for any triplets on that staff.  Often a dotted-eighth followed by a 16th would be played as quarter & eighth, so this change might also be necessary.
  • On the displayed but muted staff, dotted notes would be replaced with undotted notes and a hidden rest with half the length of the undotted note.  If the note was originally dotted, its tie can be removed and the note following replaced with a dotted rest, again with half the length of the previous note.
  • On the displayed staff, add in "Staff Italic" a 3 over the middle notes in the first few triplet sets and simile once the triplet pattern is established.
These ideas are demonstrated in the attached file.
Other related tips are in Notating Pentuplets and n-tuplets (vs m-tuplets).

A webpage to help with this is Triplets.htm.  The user has to add the 3 over the middle notes in the first few triplet sets and simile if desired, but the page handles the first three things on the list.

General Discussion / Re: Accent Placement
I have replaced the attachment (again).  Where the "articulationsonstem" came from the first time (copy it to the clipboard) I don't know but when I copied the last few measures to the end of V23 the accents do indeed appear between the notes (vertically).  Is this an option that can be done w/o working on the clipboard?
915
General Discussion / Re: Accent Placement
That would be an enhancement to putting 2 voices on one staff. NoteWorthy seems to have abandoned all work in this area in favor of layering. While useful, I think this would require substantial additions to the user interface. For both articuations and slurs, there would need to be options to apply them to the top, bottom or both voice(s).

More control of ties is a good idea. Currently, a "^" in the 'Pos:' or 'Pos2:' portion of the object cause a tie. If that that could be extended so that "%" would be a tie down, "&" a tie up and "$" an invisible tie, NWC2 would be much improved. It could be considered an "advanced feature", accessible only by User Tool or manually modifing clipboard data.
Attached is something I'm currently transcribing.  Check out around measure 21 where the accents are.

General Discussion / Re: Accent Placement
If I am having to force stem direction, the thing on the other side of the note is probably another note.  I would also like the option of putting staccato dots, accents, tenutos, slurs, ties, etc. at the other end of the note.

General Discussion / Re: Extra Notes for extra lyrics
Hi, thanks for your reply.  There are only 4 notes in the bar the extra two notes for the second verse would only be played for the second verse.  So how do I set the notes to play only for the second verse.

You can separate words to appear on the same syllable with an underscore.  To use your text:
"You Comfort the home_less".  "Comfort" doesn't need to be hyphenated here and "home less" will appear in one syllable but separated as shown.

An alternative is to provide for six syllables but only use four by inserting "stand alone" underscores:
"Teach me _ to be _".

General Discussion / Re: multiduration chord buglet
I had the same problem as you.  It was easy enough to fix when the staff was copied to the clipboard to be copied back, but it is a big hassle while staying in NWC.

General Discussion / Re: Real Music Composition Software
I am not so sure of the musical outcome of a machine that does the hard work. It's a bit like church organs:  an electronic thing could never take its place... or could it? I have seen and heard Heijligers organs that are very, very impressive. Not quite the organs that you find in large churches and cathedrals, but still, of extremely good quality indeed. And "it could never be done, because..."
When our church was considering a new organ around 1994 or so, the organist then heard some high quality electronic instruments.  Her famous quote was "It sounds like a recording of a very good organ."  We eventually got a fine pipe organ from Casavant (sp?).

User Tools / Updated install procedure?
After my hard drive gave symptoms of crashing, I subscribed to a backup service but didn't flag the directory with the php scripts as one to be saved.  Now I have (kinda) a new PC and had to reinstall the scripts from scratch and found the old version of the arpegginate (sp?) script.

I found the new version from this forum and have changed the .ini file, but was wondering if there is an updated install script with the latest versions of these scripts or vbs files?  TIA

General Discussion / Re: notating tuplets so that the audit bar lines feature can be used.
My apologies if I seemed a little testy.  I had read the original post to imply tsoilihoi already knew about the required tempo change and just wanted the Audit Bar Lines tool to work.  At any rate I have made some minor changes in my usertip and plan to do some more soon so I can take out the first reply.

Once again, my apologies.

General Discussion / Re: notating tuplets so that the audit bar lines feature can be used.
Warren's tip has nothing to do with playback.  It does work for printing (only).
I guess I misinterpret what you mean by playback and am curious as how it could be done any better (except for native support in NWC).  There are three pentuplets in Thais Meditation and I tried to make them look and playback as well as possible.  There is a hidden tempo change of 125% during the pentuplets, in the played-hidden staves the concurrent notes are tied to increase their length by a quarter, and in the visible-muted staves there are hidden rests instead of tied notes.

If this could be improved, I'm all ears.

General Discussion / Re: notating tuplets so that the audit bar lines feature can be used.
Just change the time signature to accomodate the extra note.  If you have five 8th notes which play in the space of two beats and the other two beats are normal, that would mean you have nine 8th notes in the measure.  For that measure, use a time signature of 9/8.

I might revisit my attachment on the user tip after I get my regular computer back.  Right now, only the "resting" line has a ghost time signature, but all staves would need it to use the audit bar lines feature.

General Discussion / Re: Windows Vista and Help files
I started with FORTRAN in school, but much of my work was in COBOL and some Assembler, then COBOL and C. The office's first PC came around 1988, but we didn't do much productive with the GWBASIC on it except play games.  This is a transcription I made of the Black Box program.

As an aside, a backup generator is keeping me online now.  We are still in the dark since a tornado (mile north of me) and strong straight line winds hit around noon on 4/4.

General Discussion / Re: Chord member command without layering?
As Rick said, layering is the superior method.  Forcing stem up/down on the same staff won't work when the parts cross over (e.g., tenor lower than bass) or one part has, say, dotted-quarter & eighth while the other has two quarters.

As for problems with rests, you can select rests and either move them up or down (while waiting to come in, the basses see whole rests under the tenor/bass staff) or change their visibility to never.  With a long rest, you can copy a hidden whole rest and a visibile bar line to the clipboard and paste it back as needed.

*Edited change* You can also send the rests into the stratosphere with a vertical offset of 2000.  Copy a rest to the clipboard, paste into notepad to change it, then cypy it back.

Hope these ideas can get you started.

General Discussion / Re: Dotted Ties
Perhaps something with Digital whiteout is what you need since NWC can't generate a dotted slur.

The underscore character "_" can be used in the lyrics when a verse doesn't have a syllable on a specific note.

General Discussion / Re: Recommedation Requested
The Cyber Hymnal already has a number of hymns in NWC format. If you find one that doesn't have lyrics in it that you need, copy to clipboard the first verse then do Cntl/L in NoteWorthy.  Change the count of the number of verses then click on "Lyric 1". Paste from the clipboard and then add hyphens as needed.  Repeat as needed for other verses.

If you have an unneeded note in a verse, just add an underline in the space between the syllables which are sung.

If you have other questions after importing a song, feel free to ask.

General Discussion / Re: An issue with accidentals
I have the same problem--files other than those in an "approved" list will not be served.  Please create nwctxt files out of them and rename them to end in ".txt" if necessary, e.g., "version1.nwc.txt".

General Discussion / Re: An issue with accidentals
Perhaps he can create a nwctxt file and copy it onto a message.  If his ISP allows him to create a website, he could put his file there (nwctxt if nwc doesn't work) and tell us where it is.

General Discussion / Re: How do you do fp<f on a long note?
You can use multi-point controllers.  In the attached file, select each mpc (will appear in grey) and do a cntl/E on it.  Note the dynamic goes down in the first ones and back up in the last one.  Also note the offset, (8th notes in this case) goes from 0 to 4 to 8 to 12 so they kick in right after each other.

I couldn't replicate the problem.  Could you attach an example or point out where it happens in the "samples" folder.

General Discussion / Re: Changing music to a different key
With a staff selected, choose tools and transpose staff.  Uncheck staff transposition since this is used to change, say, a clarinet from concert pitch to Bb but have it stay sound the same.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Cue notes?
It would indeed be helpful if cue/grace notes had the option of taking time or NOT taking time (as it is now).  It wouldn't be necessary to follow a "cue" with a hidden rest of the same length.

General Discussion / Re: Heart Of Oak
Another acceptible format for those songs is also midi.  Try putting the following line in a search engine:

Code: [Select · Download]
"Heart of Oak" nwc OR mid

You will have to fix triplets and either enter or cut-and-paste the lyrics (adding slurs and hyphens as needed).  Not as easy as clicking on an NWC file, but the exercise should be useful learning tool.

To get you started, this looks like a promising link.

Welcome to the NWC community!

Tips & Tricks / Re: Cue notes?
This is something I put together to display the NWC2STDA font, it's a small javascript page:

NWC2STDA.htm

It displays the number of a character, the character itself, and then the character from the NWC2STDA font.

1/30/08 Reworked the cue demo with grace notes instead of text.  I could enter a dotted half note with no problem, but noticed I had to change stem direction "by hand" when necessary.

David, there is no need to apologize.  Most of what I have done throughout life is to try to use or perhaps build on what others have done.  If this helps you or anyone else to improve the usefulness of NoteWorthy, everyone benefits.
