General Discussion / Re: colored syllables
Lyrics are the same color as the staff on which they reside.
If you want some syllables in another color, put them on a staff of that color.
I tried that and only saw the color when I was moving the scrollbar.  Attached is a minor modification from your attachment, replacing the Now with _ on the first lyric line.

General Discussion / Grace notes with duration
I had started to create a new tool which would add hidden rests after selected grace notes, but hit a brick wall when I saw grace notes can't be beamed or tripletized when a rest comes between them.  Any way around this?  Any plans to make real durations an optional attribute of notes and chords?  Perhaps a new type of notes to be used as cues?

This was referenced in a user tip.

General Discussion / Re: simple notations
Try selecting the note(s) included on a previous note's slur or tie where you want a lyric syllable.  Select it (them) and Cntl/E.  For notes, the third drop down box around the middle of the new window will be Lyric Syllable.  Change it to Always and you're done.

General Discussion / Re: What is this?
The attached is an example of a turn using the Boxmark font available on Scriptorium.  The # under the turn is real and necessary--the top staff is how I was taught to play it (normally hidden).

User Tools / Re: A better Arpeggiate Chord
You can use a hidden, played single staff to create the sound.  On the displayed and (temporarily) muted staves, you can insert the wavy lines by hand.

General Discussion / Re: Trplets
Enter your quarter and eighth notes.  Select both of them then Cntl/T or click on the triplet icon (  3 over a bracket).

Welcome to the forums!

User Tools / Re: Multi Measure Rest tool
I was working with an imported midi file with the idea of moving the conductor/tempo staff to the top, doing a layerhide on it and layering it into the first staff.  A tempo change in the middle of some measures left visible rests on top of the first staff.  The new version in the first message will hide all rests when this option is selected.  When Undo is selected along with layerhide, visibility on all rests will be reset to the default.

General Discussion / Re: Plea for a more prominent glyph
At the risk of being labled "excessively picky":
I would love to see the "V" of the up bow as thick as the two "legs" of the down bow.

It seems in going through some of my music there is a little less ink on the down bow and a little more on the up so neither overpowers the other.

FWIW, the same symbols upside down indicate heel and toe for the pedals in organ music..

General Discussion / Re: 2 part harmony
I've been frustrated with using separate layers vs. the built-in split-chords-on-one-staff approach. All of the nice things that NWC does for you on split-chord staves (note collision, stem height/flag position alignment, accidental spacing, etc.) have to be done by hand or by several passes of user tools. I will admit to not having spent any time exploring whether the latest user tool interface would allow one to parse through layered staves and do the necessary fix-ups on each layer so that everything looks great. I should do that.

Or... maybe such a tool already exists, or an existing one could be built upon?

The problem is a tool would have to know which two staves on which to operate.  Working on all pairs of layered staves might be an idea, but how to tell it to leave a certain pair alone?  Perhaps you would want to layer the staves during the chorale but leave individual staves intact during the fugue from measures 100-148.  Unlike many other tools, this one would have to look at the whole file at once.

I have tryed to stay away from webpages to manipulate nwctxt since alternating between applications and cutting and pasting is never going to be as easy as running a user tool, but for me writing a tool for more than one staff at a time would be a nightmare.  Still, I'm limited to JavaScript but scripts in other languages might be easier for you and this project.  Good luck if you decide to tackle it!

General Discussion / Re: 2 part harmony
If notes on layered staves are crashing into each other (e.g., Eb and F), this webpage can help.  Both staves must be cut into the respective text areas, click on Submit, then copy the staves back where they were originally.

Because this reads two staves at the same time, it would be almost impossible to create a traditional user tool to do this.

General Discussion / Re: Placement of symbols
That's another thing, with placement of text.  I have a piece of music for guitar (the original was for lute) by Vincenzo Galilei, and I was trying to put the fingering on it.  Trouble was, whenever I tried to put one I had already placed elsewhere, it insisted on putting it at the exact same level that I put it before.  I thought I should be able to set a location, but when I called up the text dialog box, it only gave me the option for entering the text.  I seem to remember selecting the location (height or depth) when I did some other text.

This is my attempt to create guitar chords, but a lot of classical guitar music uses very few of them.

User Tools / Re: Rubato
I have changed this script to allow for gradual transitions, creating rit. or acc. as needed between generated tempo indications.  The new script is in the first message.

When using it, it seems to work better when applied to whole rests in a tempo staff.

General Discussion / Re: Ties in solving chords
The trick is to enter the "/" before doing Enter or Cntl/Enter to add the note.

Note how the nwctxt looks:
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.51,Single)
|Chord|Dur:4th,Dotted,Slur|Pos:-3,b-1^,b2
|Chord|Dur:16th,Slur|Pos:b-4^,-1^,1
|Chord|Dur:16th,Slur|Pos:-4^,-1^,0^
|Chord|Dur:4th|Pos:-4,-1,0
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

The carat "^" indicates a tie.  As a last resort you can cut a note to the clipboard, fix it with editor, select all to the clipboard, go back to NWC and paste it back.

General Discussion / Re: Placement of symbols
I really have no idea how to use nwc code.
Just click on "Download" and let NWC open it.

What's odd about this was that I removed a fermata, and replaced it with one with a time duration, and it moved it from top to bottom.  I messed around with the up-and-down stems (I found out accidentally that that procedure is excellent when placing rests and adding notes to the same beat), but it didn't get me anywhere with the fermata.
Rick didn't put a real fermata in there, that was a text object.  Where you want an upside down fermata, press x to get text, for Display Font choose Staff Symbols, then pick t for an upside down fermata or y for a right side up version.

To get a working fermata at that point, put it on a hidden staff or insert hidden tempo changes to slow down then reset the tempo.

User Tools / Re: Tool to adjust stem lengths?
I might be able to help, not with a tool but a website where (parts of) two staves are cut into two textareas and code can identify objects being sounded (appearing) concurrently and change one or both where necessary.  Attach a before and after sample with a description of what needs to be done and I'll try to look at it.

This is a sample of an earlier webpage--enter Cntl/U to look under the hood (works for most browsers).

General Discussion / Re: Noteworthy Newsgroup
for an old fogey, who hasn't visited the Noteworthy Newsgroup for years,
please spell out in detail,  which disk you used and
how you validated your installation disk
to get your user name and password

The latest disk which I have, is V2.5, and I'm using NWC V2.51
(I started using NWC when it still was distributed on stiffy,
and my NWC 1.75b disk does show an Authenticity ID)
I started going here.  My installation disk was for 1.75a which had a two part Authenticity ID.  Instead of clicking on Next, choose Use this form instead in the note near the bottom.  You will get to a page with a place for your name and two textboxes for your AID.

I just got my username and password by validating my instillation disk, but reading or writing attachments is a new problem.

How can uuencode or uudecode be done on a Windows PC (not Unix)?

General Discussion / Re: Noteworthy Newsgroup
I used to be quite active on it, but not for a number of years.  I have to enter a password to access any newsgroup and an extra one to access the nwc group is too much.  In the early days, newsgroups were what the internet was all about--now people go to websites with forums or social media, myself included.

I wish the Newsgroup could just become another major category on this Forum.

General Discussion / Re: My playback has gone all dissonant!
One way to track this down is to mute all but one staff.  Start adding staves and listening until something sounds wierd.  That should help you concentrate on the key and transpositions for that particular staff.

General Discussion / Re: Master staff
The use of a tempo track has been around for a while.  One staff at the top is filled with hidden rests and bar lines as well as visible tempos, tempo variences, and rehearsal symbols.  When printing parts, it is layered into the part being printed.
336
User Tools / Re: Multi Measure Rest tool
I gather you can use this only when all the staves have the same number of multi measure rests?
All of the staves should have the same number of measures, but the number of MMR's doesn't have to be the same unless, perhaps, similar parts are on a two staff system, i.e. three horn parts.  It might be helpful to replace the last few bars of an MMR with regular whole rest measures so that cues can be inserted for just the part(s) about to come in.
338
User Tools / Rubato
I have created a tool for adding rubato to a song in NWC.  Between the first two tempo markings, the base tempo will gradually increase or decrease in a linear fashion while being modified by a random function.  If there is no second tempo, the base tempo will be constant.  The user is prompted for the amount of variation, from petty theft to grand larceny.

After copying this to your PC, open NWC and install a new tool.  Use Browse to fill in the path to the file while adding "WScript " (note trailing space) to the beginning of the line and
" <PROMPT:Enter percentage:=*10> <PROMPT:Smooth Transition?:=|Y|N>" to the end.

Please save the file changing the end from .js.txt to .js and the above instructions should work.

Changed attachment.  Changed instructions for prompt.

Replaced attachment (6/11/14) for better random function: Gaussian distribution (bell curve), mean=0, std. deviation=1.

General Discussion / Re: Staff justification
A user tool is easier to use than this, but not by much.  This web page can insert starting (default) spacers between everything, then  increase or decrease their size.  Once open at the same time as NWC, use Alt/Tab to get between one and the other.
341
General Discussion / Re: melisma
When you insert the underline as text, experiment with Justification.  It is under Placement when you have selected a text object.
344
General Discussion / Re: Shift treble cleft down 8 for TTBB ?
The answer fathafluff gave works here--seeing an 8 under the staff is par for the course although no tenor is going to sing "up" if it is omitted.  For music where the octave down is implied (guitar for example), the method Flurmy suggested is the way to go.  Just know which arrow to get out of your quiver.
346
General Discussion / Re: emailing songs
You would attach the *.nwc file or the *.zip if you are sending them a number of movements at once.  Your nwc files are probably under a NoteWorthy or NoteWorthy2 directory under Documents.  To check it out, start to do a "save as" on one of your song files to note where it is, then cancel out.  You will need that path when you do your mass emails.
