General Discussion / Re: Forcing Line Breaks
It is an attribute of a bar line.  Select the top bar line of a system and do cntl/E.  Under Bar Line where will be a check box to force a system break.

General Discussion / Re: Bar Lines on Orchestral Scores
The best you can do right now is to use piano staves for that purpose (Upper Grand to start and Lower Grand to finish).  Something like your request has been on the wish list for some time.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: Tie Glitch
I assume you have identified the staff where this happens.  If not, highlight each staff and hit shift/F5 to find it.  While doing this, temporarily inserting a very fast tempo would help.

After identifying the staff (reset tempo if necessary), pay close attention to where you are first aware of the problem.  For example, if measure 100 is OK but you hear a tied F in measure 300, listen to 100-200 on that staff.  If a problem see if m. 150 is OK--if no problem on 200, focus on measures 200-300, i.e., is m. 250 OK.  You are looking for an F natural tied to something other than an F or some other note where it should be a slur for example.

This is another way to look for it:  Go to the front end of the staff enter cntl/F and paste in the following:

|Note|Duration:*|PitchPos:F 5@3|Visibility:Default

That was created by copying an F to the clipboard, doing a cntl/F and pasting it into the expression.  Once there I replaced the duration with an asterisk to indicate I would accept that F with any duration.  After you find the first one, hit F3 until you find an F natural tied to something other than an F natural.

General Discussion / Re: cadenzas
The stuff before the cadenza ends on a dominant note or chord, (like the 3/4 hour chimes on a Westminster style clock).

Embellish themes which have already been introduced, whatever the soloist can handle.

End with a long trill (so conductor can get everyone ready to play) ending in the tonic.

As with any creative venture, YMMV.

General Discussion / Re: easy way to set default staff volume to 64?
Find the icon which looks like an open book and click on it (File menu then page setup does the same thing).  Under the "Contents" tab, visible staves will have a check, hidden ones won't.  Look at "moonlite" in your samples folder.  In the original file, the staves you look at are muted while only the hidden ones actually play.

General Discussion / Re: Playing from desired position (not from start)
To put a boxed "50" in the music, first install the Boxmarks font (if you haven't done so already) and choose it as a user font in the piece you are working on.  Where you want to insert your boxed 50, hold down the shift key and enter "[50]".  It will look like "{%)}" but will display correctly.

General Discussion / Re: Two notes connected by beam over two staves, is that possible?
You can't do that directly, but a workaround exists if you want to display muted staves, but play hidden staves.  First, do whatever necessary to make the piece sound correctly.  Copy these staves to new staves which you will mute, then hide the original ones.  This was done in "moonlite" in your samples folder.

When you need to borrow a note from the other staff, place it so it appears in the correct location.  Then select it and, after Cntl/E, choose "no leger lines".  Be sure you are satisfied with the spacing between the staves before doing this since any change would make it necessary to revisit all occurrences of borrowed notes.

General Discussion / Re: To Midi-conversion inaccuracy
We are not talking about really loud music here, just the other chorus parts and the accompaniment.  By separating a specific choral part to the other speaker, someone studying that part would have no problem hearing it.  Also, someone could highlight that part even more by adjusting the balance on their computer's speakers (right click on the speaker in the systray).

To test if they had learned the part, just adjust the balance the other way--then they would get no help.

General Discussion / Re: Transposing for Tin Whistle
When a C is written a D will be played.  If you write the piece in D, you can have NWC transpose for you after you are finished.  While the cursor is on that staff, select Tools and Transpose.  Select -2 half steps and you want the transposition on playback, that is, when you see a C, you will hear a D.

If you write the part in C (be sure to insert a key signature--it will appear as a greyed out F natural), press F2 with that staff selected and, under the midi tab, transpose up by two half steps.

General Discussion / Re: Search and replace
I think macro processing is already on the wish list.  While it is possible to automate the process of looking for pedal marks, that's only a part of what you need.

General Discussion / Re: Extended Rests
I never had that problem.  The measure numbers stay lined up automatically.  If I add a measure number it is because a multi-measure rest ends in the middle of a line and it makes that spot easier to find in a rehearsal.

General Discussion / Re: Incidental Notes
You can insert brackets around the note as ordinary text comments.

There two ways to insert a syllable on a specific verse but not on others:

1. Change the note's lyric attribute to never and insert the extra syllable as text.

2. Don't change the lyric attribute but insert an underline in the text in the other verses. (better choice)

General Discussion / Re: Trill
It can be done with a series of pitch bends.  Unless you have a pressing reason to avoid it, put the whole note and text of "tr~~~~~" next to it in the displayed/muted staff and the da-DA-da-DA-da-DA-da-DA 16th notes in the played/hidden staff as Curzon suggested.

General Discussion / Re: 2 against 3 or 3 against 4
Making a note a triplet reduces its time by 1/3.  Turning three quarter notes into triplets will fill up only two beats.  To fill up a 4/4 measure, you need a trio of half notes.

General Discussion / Re: Changing instruments
With the staff selected, press F2 and select the "Instrument" tab.  If you need to change the instrument in the middle, e.g., strings going from arco to pizz. and vice versa, go to the "Insert" menu and select "Instrument", or just press "i".

General Discussion / Re: Cyber Hymnal
I just sent CyberHymnal the following email, so it shouldn't be necessary to deluge them further:

I have been a registered user of the NoteWorthy Composer for about five years and have visited your website from time to time.  Normally when I select a file in *.nwc format my browser will automatically open the Composer, but on your site the file appears as text starting with "[NWZ]" followed by random characters.

Please ask the company which hosts your website to treat all *.nwc files as binary.  If a forum hosted by NoteWorthy, a suggestion has been made that a file named ".htaccess" placed in the same directory as your "nwc" files with the contents:

AddType application/x-nwc nwc

might correct the problem.

NoteWorthy has also provided the following tool to check out "nwc" files in any website:

General Discussion / Re: The final note has an abrupt end
You almost have a complete example already.  In your samples folder, open moonlite and display all staves.  Note the hidden bass has an extra measure with a final very soft note.  Add a pedal down before the bass note in measure 203 and remove the pedal up mark which followed.  Now play the last few measures of the piece (or shift/F5 on the bass staff).  This is a way to implement the tip in Reply 5.

General Discussion / Re: Combining Staves/Stems
There are two ways to change stem direction.  First select the note (or group of notes).  A right click on the mouse will give you a number of attributes you can change OR shift and either up arrow or down arrow will change stem direction.

General Discussion / Re: Transposition
It doesn't look like you are transposing, you are just placing the notes where they belong on the proper clef.

The middle note on a viola clef (Alto Clef) is middle C.  If you are changing for a tenor which often uses the treble clef an octave down, middle C is the 3rd space--select everything on the staff (Home, shift/End) and cntl/shift/up arrow ONE time and change the clef to treble and octave down.  To move everything to an unshifted treble clef (the one the violin uses), cntl/shift down arrow SIX times after selecting it.  For a bass clef, it's up arrow six times.

Once done, go back to the clef and select it.  From there it will be easy to change and add an octave shift if necessary.

General Discussion / Re: Location of triplet slur
I would like to have triplets w/o having the |---3---| above the note at all as an option.  In addition to being able to place the "3" where you want it, a piece with all triplets (e.g., Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring) doesn't need all the 3's with notes beamed in groups of three for measure after measure.

General Discussion / Re: Find (Ctrl+F) "Tenuto", "Staccato" and "Slur"
First, select any note which matches your criteria and copy it to the clipboard.  Go back to the front of the staff where you want to search and Cntrl/F.  In the "By Expression" window, paste from the clipboard and you will get something like this:

|Note|Duration:Eighth,Tenuto|PitchPos:C 5@6|Visibility:Default

Attributes you are not interested in (or will take anything) should be replaced with an asterisk:

|Note|Duration:*,Tenuto|PitchPos:*|Visibility:*

You may have to go back and redo this looking for a Chord instead of a Note.

General Discussion / Re: Adding accidentals / selecting one note in a chord
I'm not sure what you are wishing for.  Right now you can select a note or a chord and change the length of everything in it just by pushing a numeric key and/or the period key.  As for adding an accidental to a note in a chord you would have to do something to get access to a specific note anyway before changing it, then change it, then do something to say you are finished.  If you needed to change an A minor chord to A major (say it's a quarter note), all that's necessary is cntl/backspace, "3" (if necessary), "9", and Cntl/Enter.  It would be difficult to streamline that any further.

General Discussion / Re: NWC files on a web page
I knocked out the final period from that URL and was able to open it, but it still started with: [NWZ] followed by eight lines of seemingly random characters.  Normally an NWC file will open in the NW Composer and, if I want to keep it, will do a "Save As" from there.  To "look" at the above file, I had to download it, but NWC had no trouble opening it once I had done so.

General Discussion / Re: Nouveau newsgroup
FWIW, this is what Babel Fish did to the 2nd reply:

Yes, you can entrust fully to Richard Woodroffe, who is the webmaster of Scriptorium, Internet site with a larger collection of files NWC. Me also I received this message, which is in fact a good news for the amateurs NoteWorthy Composer. What escapes to me this is why Richard decided to hide his waiter of origin with this nowhere.com which clearly contributes to make suspect its message. As for the necessity of the password, the propietaires of NWC decided this time to limit the participation in the new newsgroup to the registrés users.

General Discussion / Re: Transposing
I can identify somewhat with not knowing other clefs.  As a violinist and a tenor I am used to the treble clef and the top part of the bass clef.  Outside of the C below the bass staff I have to think about which lower notes are which since I rarely refer to them, let alone play or sing them.

It is customary when men sing from the treble staff to automatically transpose down an octave.  If you want to do that on your trombone kick all notes up just five notches instead of twelve.

FWIW, the lines on the treble clef are Every Good Boy Does Fine and the spaces spell out FACE.

General Discussion / Re: Newsgroup Anomaly?
I have to look for a message that still exists on the newsgroup.  Another bunch of messages appear in bold (default for unread), but don't have a status of unread.  When I click on one of them, they are "expired". Mar 16 at 4:50pm was the last thing I saw.

General Discussion / Re: select and delete several measures
You can select a group of measures for many purposes by going to one end of the group and while holding down the shift key press the <- or -> to select one object or also hold down Ctrl to select a measure at a time.  You can change a common attribute of everything selected or delete it or cut it.
