General Discussion / Re: the chant challenge
Go to the wish list and submit your proposal about adjusting stem length. I've proposed ideas myself that were realized on  later versions, so it may appear too :)

I'm not sure I understand your need (in particular the kind of "link" between notes and lyrics you seem to want). Could you please give us a link to some picture file that shows us what you'd like to do?
Maybe the (Musiqwik?) fonts that Robert Allgeyer created may help you; And, for gregorian chant, you may want to use the freeware Gregoire (by a French Monk, in French, Dutch, English).

General Discussion / Re: MIDI programs for the MacIntosh
May I suggest that you use OS X instead of OS 9. Panther(X.3) is much quicker than X.2, and quicker than OS 9.
In the iLife suite you'll find GarageBand which is much more advanced than FruityLoops, IMHO! Go and see it at Apple :)

General Discussion / Re: Third Ending Ignored
I'd like it'd work. Alas it doesn't.
I've tried what you said: (I replace (parts')names by notes, for simplicity):
C MRO B SingleBar 1stE A MRC 2ndE G DoubleBar F MRC 3rdE E
and playback gives:
C B A B G F B F B F B F B F B F B F
which is not what we expect; after many different tries, I replaced the DoubleBar with a single bar, and I obtained:
C B A B G F B E
which is what we wanted.
I wonder why the double bar causes such behavior; I admit that the repeats is the hardest part for me in NWC :/

Finally, quoting David, I'd say:
I'm not too familiar with church music, but I assume you're describing a song structure along the lines of
Introduction / Chorus / First stanza / Chorus / Second stanza / Interlude / Chorus / Last stanza

If so, place a master repeat open [MRO] at the beginning of the chorus, a 1st ending at the beginning of the first stanza, a master repeat close [MRC] at the end of the first stanza, a 2nd ending at the beginning of the second stanza, a single bar at the end of the second stanza but not a repeat there, and put a MRC at the end of the interlude. Place a third ending at the beginning of the last stanza.
Now it'd be better to indicate where the double bar should be. Adding an extra barline may do the trick, but it is a bit too "wide" IMHO.

General Discussion / Re: high text
I often do the same (adding an extra staff on the top) which I do not display. But I also use it for extra work: it's really useful when you want to use the tools such as transpose, check beaming, etc only on a portion of a score.
Simply copy/paste the part you want, apply the tool(s) on that extra staff, cut and paste back.
Of course that stuff is hidden and muted :) I only delete it when sending the file or when I'm sure the score is achieved.

General Discussion / Re: Imported MIDI files won't play
I've just thought of something else.
Maybe you have another program that "locks" the MIDI driver; among those "another program", it can be another instance of NWC running.

Please check that in NWC Midi options (menu Tools/Options, Midi tab), the Port Usage is set to "While Playing". This is the only option where you can have many NWC simultaneously if you want any of them (but one at a time) to play if you have only one MIDI driver (here the microsfot midi mapper).

There is no reason that usually NWC plays correctly MIDI and NWC files, and not when you import them. What did you do launch before??

General Discussion / Re: Hearing what you enter as you enter notes
Robert, debo, (and others of course), you may also consider using a virtual piano on your PC.
See https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=896.msg4869#msg4869 and following (thanks Fred & Co) Read more than the reply 10!
HTH!
P.S. #1 : I checked the links: they're out of date. So I spent some time to locate it again: you can find piano21.zip here (All the non-HTM files are from the zip file) or here also,
or easier, among others (LOL! Pianoman is there :) HERE.

P.S. #2 debo, I just felt as you do about "contaminated" when composing. But I have to add that after some time of practice, it disappeared, simply because my "mind's ear" became more exact, and now I usually enter exactly what I have in mind (even without the virtual piano) using the standard keyboard.
Years ago, I had written (under MS-DOS) a small music editor myself, and found out that hearing the note as I entered it (which my own software does) was not good in fact, especially  when one hits the wrong note... for the same reason: it was disturbing me rather than helping me.
I should mention that I'm not a pianist (though I'm trying to learn it this year).
My encouter with NWC in 1995 was the best thing it happened to me about music (not to mention my neighbor who taught me grand flute)

General Discussion / Re: What is a Tenor Clef?
Agnes: you're right, as I told that with the 15 possibles clefs, there is redundancies. And among the 10 you mentioned, only one, I agree.
Nevertheless, and for a synthetic view, through the last link of the page David mentioned, we see the usual current clefs, which are the 7 ones I mentioned, plus "G1".
I think the "C5" should not be used, since redundant.
For 96,4% of music readers, knowing all those clefs is only used for on-fly transposing. Which is always a funny thing to do ;)

AFAIK, the clefs come from the gregorian clefs (which may come from somewhere else). Have a look here to see a C clef. The F clef is as the C clef, with a small drawing at the left ("¬" but going lower).
The calligraphist "decorated" those clefs, as for the G clef which can be a G (German/English) or a Sol (French, Italian…), decorated.
The "two dots" embracing the line indicating the note is only for the Fa clef: it is the souvenir of the two horizontal bars of the F letter...  at least it is what a teacher told me 29 years ago.
60
General Discussion / Re: What is a Tenor Clef?
Theresa, of course cello players know their notes. As any decent musician.
Thanks Ewan for the correct link :)
Agnes, yes we could possibly make 15 clefs; but try it, and you'll notice that some of them are redundant, I mean that the same position on a staff with different clefs will give the same note's name, which in fact reduces to 7 necessary clefs.
(IMHO, G clef on 1st line was called "French Violin"
Currently we (at 21th century) use only G clef on 2nd line, F clef on 3rd and 4th line, and C clef on 1,2,3,4 lines. On top line it should be F clef on 3rd line, but in some old papers it may still appear.
I learned that when trying to use a G clef on 3rd line to avoid 3 to 6 leger lines above the "soprano" clef for my highest notes on flute. My teacher then told me that a clef already existed for that: the C clef on 1st line.

You may find in some books or online info a diagram which represent all the clefs in ascending order. A small one with three clefs is here.

General Discussion / Re: What is a Tenor Clef?
On my side (flutist, pianist, guitarist & singer) I only use what you call "tenor clef" as a tool to easily(?) transpose, exactly as the other 6 clefs. For me the "tenor clef" is called "Clé d'ut 4", i.e. "Ut Clef on 4th line". Which obviously means that the C (Ut) is on the 4th line (counting from bottom to top). There are also Clé d'ut 3 (Alto clef), Clé d'ut 1, Clé d'ut 2...
I also used it with ancient music, where the tenor voice was written with that clef...

(Note: Ewan, I couldn't find your reply in your last post, which one is it among those?)

General Discussion / Re: Layering Sop and Alto - quavers (eighth notes) become semiquaver
As you say yourself, the usual solution is to set soprano & tenor notes with stem up, and bass & alto notes with stem down.
You may set up S&A lyrics above the (common or layered) staff, and T&B lyrics below the system. That way you can again reduce the interval needed between the SA / TB staves.
I usually can have 5 to 7 system of 2 staves per page using staff size 19 (with lyrics below each staff), so it should be okay.
Don't forget to minimize the space where you can (below the bass & above the soprano staves).
I think that if you search this forum (or better, search the site with the word "layering" you'll get some interesting results.

General Discussion / Re: re: PS to whole staff missing
Sorry if this thread reacts as if I were acting as a troll; it wasn't my intention.
What I've noticed is that NWC is usable with many different keyboard configurations. Having a qwerty kbd or not, 101/102 keys or 88(92?). For 70 I wonder ;)
Thank you all for your explanations on how you use your keyboard: there are hints that I'll probably try&keep.

On a laptop, there is often a modifier key called Fn (function, in blue, red or green) that allows some keys to act as the numpad.
A laptop is very good to enter music with NWC anywhere, anytime. I'd like to have one, even an old 486 SX with win95. The sound quality doesn't matter at that time.

General Discussion / Re: Need Fine-Tuning
Welcome Chris!
The software you downloaded is not a demo but a fully functional version, excepted in a limited number of saving a same file, etc. But you can do a full score as with the registered version.
The scriptorium is a place where to put files which are preferably in final state, not scores which still need work to be correct.
The proper place for that is either here in the forum, if you provide a link to your file that you put somewhere on a web site of yours (you may refer to user tip #138); or in the newsgroup, which is intensively used for that. However, the current newsgroup is only for reg'd users, contrary to the previous ones. I've no NNTP access, so I won't be of more help on that :(
I remember that there are also some (yahoo) groups for discussing NWC. You can find them via the (yahoo) site.

In some words, you'll make your scores sound more real if you use some expression (slightly varying velocity, tempo, etc.). Just try :)
Many things have been said on that matter on the forum. Just seek and read.

General Discussion / Re: About 'system'
The "system" term, or more exactly "système", was one of the first technical words I learned about written polyphonic music.
I suppose this is a French term which was written as is in English... The last definition of Robert in reply 1 is good.
It's the set of written music from left to right which is played together, so one or many staves is always a system. However, we shouldn't use the word "system" for only one staff, but this is a current "abus de langage".

General Discussion / Re: Song Templates
If you want to make a standard NWC file as a template, simply copy/move it to the templates directory :)
And there are many of them at the Scripto.
I remember posting a user tip on adding sub-directories: https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=2362. You can create as many categories(=directories) as you want, but do not create sub-directories in the sub-directories.

General Discussion / Re: re: PS to whole staff missing
Cyril wrote: "Do NOT have the num-lock on!". I wonder why!? In that case, I have no direct access to any number. I need to press shift to access them, on the numpad or the standard keyboard. (I should mention that I ain't using a QWERTY kbd). If I use the CAPS LOCK I won't have access to ",", ";".
I use the (right) thumb to move the cursor, and 1-9 for notes values (length&accidental), and + and - when correcting length values.

Anyway, the mouse is rarely more useful/efficient than the keyboard. This is not the case only with NWC, but with many office software (unless you're a painter).

Have fun with NWC quickness :)

General Discussion / Re: Downloading drum patches...
the Drumref file is in the Samples directory of your standard NWC installation.
I don't understand what you mean by "I downloaded an NW file that has drum sounds". Drums are some notes of the percussion set; this set is accessible via the MIDI channel number 10. Look at the drumref staves setup, or re-read reply 1 hereover, where it is clearly stated.
For more details, it was already discussed in this forum!

Unless you're talking of sound fonts, there is nothing more to download.

General Discussion / Re: Staff size when printed
The NoteWorthy Player has less capabilities than the browser plug-in (except that it can play multiple file from the command line, but this is a rare need), but it can print as a PDF reader can do with a PDF file.
If you want to modify an NWC file, then NWC (Composer) is the right tool, as Distiller is a tool to modify PDF files, or Word for .Doc files (Word Viewer is the reader).
Try it, it's worthy :)
74
General Discussion / Re: Staff size when printed
David was talking here of actions available within NoteWorthy Composer, not the plug-in.
But you can do them anyway (in NWC).
I'll add that you can force some system break to enhance the global layout.

But before anything, check that the paper size on which you want to print is the same as the nwc author had in mind. It may be A4 or Letter. Sometimes this is a sufficient reason to have a printed result that seems odd.

General Discussion / Re: Variable Speed on the Player
Thanks for the link, David :)
'tis just the kind of software I need for some 7-voices transcription! And even better, it works on OS 9&X, and my win95 :)
I remember using another (free) software that did the same. I'll try to find it again, as it is less expensive :)
But that one is easy to use!

General Discussion / Re: Un-Install
If some files remain, it's probably that NWC was running at that time (for the EXE file at least).
I think you can safely remove the folder if you already did the uninstall process described above.
Just a question though, because of my curiosity: why do you want to uninstall it??

General Discussion / Re: How do I represent Breve (an 8 beat note) ?
IIRC, breves are already in boxmark2 beta 4 font.
See here for details.
I named it "double whole", car. "°" (0176 if you don't have it on your keyboard).

Considering the last text item hint: you could use instead a lyric line. Then the highlighting will be consistent.

General Discussion / Re: Note Stem Length
Ron wrote in https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=3831.msg23776#msg23776: Quite often I find that notes that collide with lyrics in just one or two places…
In such cases, I often solved it by inserting one or some underscores ( "_" char) just before (or after) the faulting syllable. This makes the syllable to move a bit right (or left, resp.) Do NOT put a space between the underscore(s) and the syllable. For example: if the 2nd syllable of "Al-le-lu-iah" is covered by a beam, then "Al-__le-lu-iah" may be much better.

You may also consider the "standard rules" vs. "Start of Accidental/notes" option, in the Staff Lyrics window (quick key: Ctrl+L), Configuration tab.

Another way is to create a 2nd lyrics line, with only underscore+space as many as needed, excepted the faulty syllable. Or a duplicated layered staff with a single lyric line, with its lyrics being placed lower than the original staff, which allows you to have the lyrics correctly highlighted at playback time). I prefer the 1st solution, but the three work :)

P.S. Do not forget to submit your wishes on the wish list page!

General Discussion / Re: Problems after diminuendos
Did you try to only override velocity values?
You can do a diminuendo from piano to fortissimo, or a crescendo from fff to ppp, just by using the overriden values (or mixing the items).
What I mean here is that you can have a p(30,-) as well as a p(90,-). Use the volume only for long notes (and do not forget that not all the sound cards do it, check yours with the Voltest.nwc sample file).
You also may check there is no hidden Diminuendo, Crescendo nor Decrescendo item somewhere that you wouldn't want.
You can find them by Ctrl+F (menu Edit/Find) and enter the following search string:
|DynamicVariance|Style:*endo
Find next using F3. As usual, the Find tool is a one-staff tool.

General Discussion / Re: Sixlets & Ninelets. How about cord names
Oops! Answered too quickly: this is incomplete.
For 6-lets, do as with a triplet. Please explain what you mean by "Triplets seem to work, but play too fast"?? Maybe you put them as 32th instead of 16th? try this: select the 6 of them, and press "-" once. Then play it again to see if it is now correct.

How to write a slash? Well, it depends on what you want. NWC doesn't "understand" slashes that way, so you have to enter the chords. If you want already done sets of chords, have a look at the helpful section, in NWC Files section (chordcharts).
There are also fonts there, but you'll have more on the boxmark2 font at http://tinyurl.com/3gdvy: the slash character with that font is what you need.

General Discussion / Re: NWC on Linux!
Funny, I thought Wine stood for Wine Is Not an Emulator, in the XINU Is Not Unix way... I must have read an old version.

As my ex-new PC is gone, if I ever buy a new one it'll be with unix (linux and/or macOsX) and/or win95 (in BlueLabel or equivalent). I'm a programmer but as a computer user I don't want to have to be a programmer!! The "configure && make && install" is the most acceptable for any user, even if that user is a programmer. go.bat was the old DOS way.

And that's also why I don't want to be a beta tester of µ$ products. There is no user of µ$. Only betatesters.

General Discussion / Re: chord with triplets
Wow! what a thread.
Trying to be concise:
  • LOL! David, now I'm frightened to speak English :)
  • how long nails…: this becomes tricky when, as I do, you have to play piano, guitar and flute... On the right hand, at least.
  • Ori: According to your (sur)name, I would have thought that you are Japanese. Funny how names can sound to an un-used ear such as mine.
  • To all, English (US or UK, native or non native) -speaking people: about music symbol names, please have a look at the following pages:
    faq #79
    https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=2488
    https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=2501
Feel free, Ori, to elaborate yours with Hebrew names!
  • Ewan: unless answering an old reply, quoting the text is not necessary, since the whole thread is usually kept. In a newsgroup where the previous post disappear, this is a good practice, but it is not needed here. Thank you, BTW, for your clear and appreciated answers.
  • When replying in this forum, take a look at the "Hints" link above the text area. You'll see how to give more strength to some text without using undesirable UPPERCASE letters.
  • About typos and mistakes: NWA kindly provides us with a simple, though efficient, spell-checker, allowing all of the english variants (but maybe not slang). When previewing your message, just have a look at the dark red section above! If there ain't any, congrats ;)
  • Some off topic answers are unavoidable. Usually they do not last very long, as most of the people here are of good will.
  • AFAIK, and as Ewan stated more than once, triplets can not be used in the same staff with the matching duplet notes (as you can do triplets with 2s (half/minim), 4th(quaver/crotchet), etc. and not only with quavers.
This means you can not do "3 pour 2" within the same staff. Use layering for this.
If you're annoyed by extra notes the layered staff may add, select all of them (Home, Shift+End) and activate the Hidden property. Then un-hide the some notes you want.
HTH! and sorry for such a long absence. Merry Christmas to all!

Tips & Tricks / Re: Making a catalog of your NWC files
...and even mastered advanced art of DOS command line!
Thanks for the new /list option of NWCINFO.EXE :-)

If you're at ease with the tip above, you may want to go further. Ready?

If you have NWC files in many directories and not only in (sub)directories of C:\MyFiles, then you could do the following command (from any directory):

dir /b /s C:\*.nwc | "C:\BIN\NWCINFO" /list > C:\MyFiles\NWC_Catalog.TSV
(compare with previous command).
Of course, the C:\MyFiles directory should be replaced by the name you want, and must already exist. If omitted, the .TSV file will be placed in the current directory.

You can repeat this with all your disk drives (C:, D:, ...), in that case the ">" sign should become ">>" if you want to add (concatenate) the results to the previous ones:
dir /b /s C:\*.nwc | "C:\BIN\NWCINFO" /list  > C:\MyFiles\NWC_Catalog.TSV
dir /b /s D:\*.nwc | "C:\BIN\NWCINFO" /list >> C:\MyFiles\NWC_Catalog.TSV
and so on.

If you're still at ease with all of this, you may want to look at the for form too to simplify the disk drives names, but this becomes more advanced DOS command!)

Tips & Tricks / Re: Visualizing chord structure in SATB choral music
Thanks Robert!
Typically a good candidate for a macro recorder :)

Note: if there is no extra staff (in particular layered staff), then you can set the layered property "On" on the 3 top staves. Then de/activating the layering property is just made by clicking on the matching checkbox in the score properties.

General Discussion / Re: .bak files
Under Dos, you can rename ALL of your .bak file at once.
For safety (not because of dos, just for safety) you should copy them first, and work with the copy.
In the proper directory:
  • mkdir safety
this creates a new "safety" directory in the current one
  • copy *.bak safety
this copies every .bak file in the new dir
  • copy *.nwc safety
and the same goes for your .nwc files
  • ren *.bak *.nwc
this renames your .bak into .nwc . Note: if the .nwc file already exist, it won't rewrite it, but will display an error message you can ignore; whereas
  • copy *.bak *.nwc
which you should *NOT* do unless it is what you want, for this will replace the most recent version by the previous one: .bak will overwrite .nwc .
Then you can work with your new nwc files.

If you want to save all of your .NWC on a diskette, type:
  • copy /V *.nwc A:\
and all the .NWC of the current directory will be copied on the diskette you already have inserted in your floppy drive.
The /V option will force windows/dos the re-read the file when it is written, an option that is OFF by default on windows...

General Discussion / Re: Problems after diminuendos
just read your post.
You may also check that you don't have another staff using the same midi channel, on which (just at your 2nd diminuendo) you may have set another velocity and/or volume variation.
But as a general rule, try to avoid fiddling with velocity and volume at the same time. More, you can't know how it will sound on another sound system!

General Discussion / Re: sustain trill
Peter and David, congrats for your patience.

Ori, two more things about NWC and related NWA software.
NWC is made for writing and playing music. And it does it well. But it's not [abbr=WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet, such as Word pretends to be]WYSIWYG[/abbr], and it's a chance.
If you want to see your score while playing along, then you should open your file with the browser plug-in instead.
Open a browser window, and simply drop your NWC file on it (that one of the many ways on how to do it). Then click on the right arrow to play it, and it will look correctly without the gray items nor hidden staves. You can even fiddle with the slider to pause/rewind/...
If you find (at composing time) that the piece is not what you want, switch back to NWC and modify your score at will. Save. Switch back to your browser (alt+tab again) and press F5 (if you're a mouse addict, all  this can be done by clicking or course). Now it has the new file loaded.
And so on.

And do not forget to read the inline help and look at the examples. They're there for you. If you don't have time to look at them, I'm afraid you won't have time for anything of value.
Happy and Holy Christmas anyway!
M.A.D.

General Discussion / Re: Tab key
Yes, that's what was asked for, years ago, by ?Sarah? because it's much more practical when having the right hand on the numpad.
And unless you're missing left hand, the tab key should be accessible with this latter.
As a left-hand person, I love the fact that most of the quickkeys are usable with the left hand only (and I'm not talking about NWC only).
If you're not using the numpad, you're probably using the numbers on the top row of the main keyboard. I'm not, because on mine, I'd need to press shift key also... or be uppercase.

Tips & Tricks / Re: A Method for Exporting *.nwc Files to the *.pdf (Adobe) Format
Fred,
Could you please update the URLs you give upthere? Both of them  are now of the 404 type (I'd prefer 409, as the Beach Boys).

I was searching for it in a hurry last friday (I had to get an NWC file of mine into PDF to be able to print it on my wife's Mac, since I can't (yet) share the printer), and I didn't succeed. I just re-searched tonight, and here it is : Ghostscript/GSview info page for the first, and PS Tips for the 2nd one.
(In between, I just used Broadgun pdfMachine, which is not bad as an emergency solution --i.e. if you don't care about having a watermark with "pdfMachine Trial Version" on every page).

This said, thank you so much for this, as it saved me hours many times!!!

NWCly yours,

General Discussion / Re: NWC 1.0
About 1.0, I don't think I've seen it. I tried (and loved, though limited (especially concerning lyrics, which didn't exist!!)) the 1.10, but I hesitated to register it. I still was in the process of trying various program to write music on a computer. At the time I discovered NWC, I deeply needed the lyrics feature (which did not exist at that time). The time to think of a solution, and the new NWC version (1.20) get out, with the lyrics feature :-) and it decided me: I signed up!! :-D
Though the sizes of the staves could not be changed easily, since the font were not yet TrueType, and it allowed only certain sizes of staves. Or am I confusing 1.10 and 1.20 features!?

I love the https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=240 post :) Almost five years ago!

General Discussion / Re: Recording Drums from Keyboard
No need to have a program for this, normally. There is a "bank" for that on almost any midi keyboard. Just select it, and you'll have a note per instrument (or so). You may refer to drumref.nwc in the Samples directory of NWC for which note is what.

Otherwise it's done by assigning the channel 10 (sometimes 16) to your midi score.
