General Discussion / Re: How to code rapidly repeated arpeggiation or octave tremolo/
I quite like that idea David. I think there would need to be an invisible time sig as well so that an audit of bar lines did not put bar lines where they are not wanted.

Also the quarter notes sound somewhat staccato so I think, mute them and have a hidden staff with 4 half notes playing rather than the 4 quarternote/rest combinations. This then sounds exactly the same as the quarter notes on either side.

General Discussion / Re: How to code rapidly repeated arpeggiation or octave tremolo/
NoteWorthy does not natively support tremolos. There are work arounds that people use so that what you see on the screen is not what is played. This is done with hidden staffs playing the what you would expect to hear and visual muted staffs showing what you would expect to see.

However, where the tremolo is notated so that there are two half notes separated by numerous bars with the two half notes taking the time space of only one, (for example) this then gives other problems.  You would then have to use chords with rests to achieve this. This then gives an ugly appearance since for every tremolo, you also have a chorded rest. (You also have to use an additional user font to supply the tremolo bars).

If you do not want your music to look like this, then another option would be to use a musical font as a user font and then insert the notes as text on the visual staff. But then you may very well have problems with stem up and stem down notes unless both have been configured in the font you are using.

All in all, what you are trying to  achieve is quite difficult and if all you want to do is to transpose for yourself, then you are better off just notating the piece as it sounds and then transposing. However, if you are transposing for other people to look at the music, this will be much more difficult and I would suggest that it would be quite difficult if you do not have experience of hidden staffs, layering (perhaps), using user fonts.

Other users I'm sure will add their thoughts and some may have other ideas of how to do this, but I fear that none of them will be easy.

Tips & Tricks / Testing Flow directions and Lyrics on repeats.
This is a bit fiddely but once you get the hang of what you are doing and why, it can be a boon when testing repeated lyrics and flow directions.

Sometimes you have a need to force NoteWorthy to go to a certain point in order to test lyrics in repeats, flow directions after a DC or DS function. This is not easy since each time you test, you have to wait for a number of iterations on the repeat or you need to start from the DC or DS instruction.

One way round this is to increase the tempo to epic proportions and then change it before the place in the file that you are monitoring.  This still takes time to get to the point you want to test and is a bit tedious.

Perhaps a better way is to create a special temporary staff. This staff contains a whole note rest and then a local repeat close. When you put in the local repeat close, you can make a guesstimate as to how may bars elapse before the point you want to test.  (If it's more than 250 then you will meed an additional local repeat bar since 250 is the maximum).

After the local repeat bar, put two or three normal bars with just a rest in. So your additional staff is all contained within one width of the page.

Now here's two working examples. (Shown in the attachment)

The attachment has 11 measures but the pattern is as follows :
6 measures, a master repeat bar (4 repeats and a default), a measure with a To Coda instruction, a measure with a DC al Coda instruction and a Coda mark, and then the remaining measures.

So the full flow would be :
6 measures, 5 repeated measures, the To Coda measure but haven't passed a DC instruction so carry on, - Reached the DC al Coda instruction, back to the beginning. 6 measures, ONE default repeated measure, Reached the To Coda Instuction and we have passed the DC instruction so jump to CODA mark, play to end.

1st Example
If you wanted to check the lyrics of the 4th and 5th passes in the repeat measure, you could place the cursor before the final note in the repeated measure and then wait for a further 2 repeats before getting to the bit you want to look at.
In the example, this is only one measure- but it could be any number.

Solution
See the top staff in the attachment. It has a local repeat configured for 9 measures. Place the cursor immediately after the local repeat and before the rest. Press F5 to start playing and immediately after that, press PAGE DOWN  to go to the real staff.
You will see that the music has started playing at the 4th lyric line

2nd Example
If you wanted to check that the flow direction is correct after the DC al Coda marking, you would normally have to position the cursor immediately before the marking and then wait for the music to go back to the beginning and follow through to the To Coda mark. This could take ages depending on your music. If you start the music at the To Coda rather than the DC al Coda, NoteWorthy will not think that it has passed the DC instruction and so you cannot test that all is correct by doing just that.

Solution
See the bottom staff in the attachment. It has a local repeat configured for 17 measures. Place the cursor immediately after the local repeat and before the rest. Press F5 to start playing and immediately after that, press page UP to go to the real staff.
You will see that the music has started playing shortly before the To Coda mark but you have fooled NoteWorthy into thinking that it has been passed the DC al Coda marking and so it obeys the To Coda instruction.

Remember that with flow directions, all instructions need to be on each staff for them to execute properly (This includes hidden staves etc). This is usually what you are testing - to make sure that each staff obeys the same flow directions at the same time.

In this paricular instance, you should NOT try and put any flow instructions in the temporary measures you have created for testing purposes.

General Discussion / Re: staccato notes
Incidentally, there would appear to be no reason I can think of, that you would want to export to midi, and then re-import to hear and see it.  Leave it in NoteWorthy format if you want to see it. If you want your work in midi format for other reasons, fair enough, but don't re-import it expecting it to be the same.
2006
General Discussion / Re: staccato notes
The thing is that importing midis back into NoteWorthy is not an exact science even for files that have been exported from NoteWorthy.
Yes, I believe that Eric means that you should export to midi and then listen to it using a midi player - not NoteWorthy Composer.

When you import back into NoteWorthy, the conversion is affected by all sorts of things, not the least of them being the options you choose in the importing dialogue.

General Discussion / Re: nwc files on a website
Quote
I have just uninstalled the plugin and indeed I can again download nwc files from Scriptorium and link directly my website to a file nwc without compressing it .
         Thanks again !

Great - Of course you can still download with the plugin installed - you just need to know that it's the plugin that's doing the damage and you need to right click and select "Save Target As" rather than left clicking.

But as Tina says, install the viewer. Then it will link the downloaded file to the correct NWC program and will play the NWC 2 file if you don't have NWC 2 Composer.
2008
General Discussion / Re: nwc files on a website
I think the reason that you get the little red cross is because you have the plugin installed.

The plugin doesn't work with later versions of Internet Explorer, and it doesn't work with version 2 files.

If you uninstall the plugin, you can then configure so that when you click on an nwc file on the net, it will open in nwc version 1 or version 2 as appropriate. This loads into NoteWorthy on your PC rather than in your browser, leaving you free to carry on browsing whilst listening to the music.

If you have available a none IE browser (Opera, Fox etc) then if you install the plugin for those browsers, all will be ok as long as you don't try to look at a version 2 file.

For more info on the plugin and Internet Explorer, go here :  http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/news/21.htm

It's been a long time since Eric updated us about what he intends to do about the plugin, and I note that this article hasn't changed recently. Perhaps he might give an update on this soon.

General Discussion / Re: nwc files on a website
Go to the Scriptorium http://nwc-scriptorium.org and look at one of the pages that has nwc files on it.
Click on one of the nwc files and see if it does what you are looking for. (Suggest you click on one that is NOT version 2)
If it does what you are trying to do, then go back to the page and select view / source to see how the page is built.

2010
General Discussion / Re: nwc files on a website
What are you trying to do. Are you trying to display it so that it plays in the plugin or just do that people can click and download?

If it's just so that people can click and download, then the following should work ok

Code: [Select · Download]
<A HREF="full_url_of_file.nwc">Name of Music</A>

But this will need to be within TR and TD definitions and so on.

General Discussion / Re: Numbering Lyric Lines
You don't say which version of NoteWorthy you are using.
If you are using 2, then there is a good work around. Do the following

Before the first note in the first measure, enter a headless whole note grace note.
This will be entirely invisible. Highlight the invisible grace note (!!!!) then go to it's properties (ALT ENTER). Select muted. Select Lyric Syllable Always.

Now go back to your lyrics and put a space between the 1.) and the first word of the lyrics. The 1.) will now be centred with the invisible headless muted whole grace note leaving the first word of the lyrics to be centred with the first proper note.

Version 1.75 and before is a different matter. Would suggest perhaps inserting text for the verse numbers rather than putting the numbers in the lyrics.

General Discussion / Re: Staff Sizing/Formatting
Another tip in addition to the previous reply is to add a section close on the top staff of the very last measure. Then highlight the section close and go to its properties (ALT ENTER). Check the Force system break on the dialogue box presented.  This will have the effect of equally spacing the remaining last few measures across the width of the page. The additional section break will not show.

General Discussion / Re: "Insert Dynamic" bug report:
I believe that it picks up the last used dynamic on the staff that you are on.  So if you insert dynamic f  on the treble staff and then move to the alto clef, it will not default to dynamic f unless the previous dynamic on the alto clef was also f.  But repeated dynamic inserts on the same stave retain the previously used dynamic.

(At least in my NWC2, that's what seems to happen)

General Discussion / Re: Font Size of Lyrics
Please can someone help me increase the size of the font used in the lyrics. I print out music for an elderly lady and she cant read what I produce

You need to go to the page setup. (File  Page Setup).  Click the Fonts tab.
Select the third line down (Staff Lyric).
Click the modify Button.

Now you can either just change the font size or, if you want, change the font used for lyrics and also the style and size.

General Discussion / Re: Glow Problem
No, I mean type out your message first. Having done that, highlight the first bit that you want glowing and then click the [glow=green,2,300]G[/glow] Glow icon.
The word or words you have selected will have brackets and the word glow etc round them aka  html language. The rest will be normal text, normal font.  Repeat for as many different glowing words you want.

General Discussion / Re: Fairground Organ ( aka Band Ogan) in NWC??
Why is nobody helping me???? I really would like to hear a fairground organ in NWC.

Perhaps because no-one is sure how to get closer.  I have tried the combination you have and reckon it gets pretty close.

What's lacking (IMHO) is that with fairground organs, and the like, there are also other things going on at the same time. So in addition to the sound you now have, you need to add in channels that perhaps have flutes trilling, some bells, possibly some brass somewhere.
But I don't think that it would be just a matter of using a straight copy of one of the current staves and changing the instrument.

Perhaps not a lot of help but I think it would take you in the right direction.

General Discussion / Re: Triplet placement
I only want to adjust the triplet. Selecting the notes in the triplet and hitting Properties does not bring up a menu to change the triplet.
Oh, also, the triplet location follows the direction of the stem and the manuscript I'm copying has them opposite (stem down, triplet above).

Suggestions?

I don't believe that there is anything that you can do about the two items you talk about. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any tricks or work arounds either.

Tips & Tricks / Cross staff Beaming on the Grand Staff without layering. – three examples
Here are three examples of how to achieve cross staff beaming on the Grand staff without using layering.
In all cases it is safer to make sure that the vertical spacing is the same for both staves and before you start and to make sure that you are satisfied with the distance between the staves.  If you alter this distance after completing the cross staff beams, it will throw the placement out. The examples are using NWC version 2 but should also work in version 1.75.

[glow=red,2,300]Example a[/glow] is where there are alternating notes on each staff.

The trick here is to play around with the “Override stem length” attribute of a note such that the beams from the notes on the treble staff co-incide with the beams on the bass staff.  Remembering that for any three notes beamed together (with rests in between), only the first and last notes need to be modified. Notes in the middle take care of themselves. You can change the default for the intervening rests to hide them. The easiest combination is for the beam to be horizontal but sloping beams can be achieved with a bit more work.

[glow=red,2,300]Example b[/glow] is where there are a number of notes on the treble clef beamed with a number of notes on the bass clef. and the beam moves from the treble to the bass clef.
In the example, notes e and e an octave lower on the treble clef are beamed to notes d and a on the bass clef. To get this to work, place four notes on the treble clef. Move the first two notes to the correct position. Move the second two notes to the bass clef. You will get leger lines running down in between the staves. Select the notes and go to note properties. Remove the leger lines. These two notes will not have the correct sound so at the same time as removing the leger lines, mute the notes. Now the trick is to repeat the same process on the bass staff. Except here, the notes that you move to the treble clef will need to be amended so that they have no leger lines and muted while the notes on the bass staff will not be muted. When played, these notes will now sound correct.

[glow=red,2,300]Example c[/glow] is where only one note is to be beamed from one staff and a number of notes are to be beamed from the other staff.
The problem here is because there is only one note from one of the staffs, NoteWorthy won’t by default apply a beam – and the note will have the standard flag.
So to fix this, you have to add anther note and beam the two together but make the first note muted and not visible. You can then use the processes in example a to align the beams.

General Discussion / Re: "rooftop" accents
Strangely enough, this is one of the mysteries of NoteWorthy (for me anyway !)
The ^ character has been in NoteWorthy's default font for as long as I can remember but it has never been usable functionally.
It is in position 42 Hex, 66 ASC (Capital B).
This can only be used as a text item if you assign the NoteWorthy font as a user font.

General Discussion / Re: I'm unable to access the Scriptorium...
Hello,

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble accessing the Scriptorium.

I have just checked and nothing is wrong at the moment - so the fault must be at your end somewhere.

There are no particular requirements for the Scriptorium. Any browser should be able to access the site and there are no requirements for cookies. The site does not use anything special.

I can't see that it would be your firewall that stops access however, I have heard that sometimes the internet explorer content advisor (Tools / Internet options/ Content) can cause problems of this nature. If you haven't got this switched on, then DON'T TOUCH IT. Could lead to trouble for evermore unless you are sure of what you are doing.

If you have access to another browser (say Opera) then it might be worthwhile trying that to see if that will work.

You don't say what happens when you try to access the site. Is it just a blank screen? Do you get an error message? Does it just sit there with the address in the top line but without loading?

General Discussion / Re: Not sending anything to the computer
Having just bought a 'new' second hand midi dumb keyboard from a boot fair yesterday, I was very pleased that everything worked as expected. And that's using Windows 98 SE on a portable with a docking station (Portables very rarely come with midi ports but their docking stations do !)

I also have to say that my son has XP on his portable and the keyboard worked on that as well, though I must admit that there was a contortion of cables and external sound boxes (Creative Extigy)needed to get it all to work.

So I guess that what you should read into this is that Robert's assertion that the problem is external to the program is quite right. The drivers that you have on your machine just cannot do the same jobe that drivers on other achines can do. Sorry !

For the record, I used the supplied Yamaha MPU401 in the tools / options / record input device. I set "Echo Midi Input" so that I could hear it.

From then on, clicking on Midi Input Active (The keyboard symbol) did the necessary, or using a one bar repeating loop enabled me to use the record button into a new stave. (Set up in Tools/Options/Record.

General Discussion / Re: Nouveau newsgroup
Ah well, apologies to all who thought that it might have been a false message. I must admit that I didn't consider that people might think that I was trying to steal NoteWorthy User Codes.

The reason that I put a false address in was that since I was sending out over 900 emails of people who has posted over the last few years, there were bound to be many, many that had expired and would therefore get bounced back. I just didn't want to have to deal with all of the bounces amongst my normal and Scriptorium e-mails. I suppose I could have opened up a hotmail account to deal with it, but that's being wise after the event !

I also sent these out as a message list so that no-one else got the addresses of any other user. I'm sure that sending such a large amount of e-mails could have given a spammer quite a number of addresses to use.

Thank you, Ivo and Ramón, for your assurances.

General Discussion / Re: Problems with Newgroup
I am hoping that the "for now at least" comment from NoteWorthy means that they are keeping the situation under review.

Those of you who go back that far will remember similar sorts of problems with the previous newsgroup provider, the one before EZUSA.

At that time, the hosts of the newsgroup ran into problems and after a few weeks of spasmodic newsgroup activity, Eric announced that he had arranged for a new private newsgroup using EZUSA.

I think wait and see for a bit longer is the order of the day.

General Discussion / Re: some other file format
Well, quite a number of issues here.

1.If you save a .wmf file and transport it to a different computer, you need to make sure that the other computer has all of the fonts that are used on the original computer. In this case, the other computer will not have the NoteWorthy font which is why strange letters will appear in the print. This is nothing to do with NoteWorthy Composer itself, just the way wmf files work.

2. Haven't experienced this one personally but it's worth mentioning that margin settings (all four) have a direct impact on the final imported product. I understand that importing to certain vector driven graphics packages such as those supplied by open office, can give the problems you mention. In the open office case, it is a known bug with their software that has been reported to them.

3. Print to file - This is dependent on your printer set up.
If you have a PS printer, then you can usually print to file and rename the output file to xxxxxx.ps but even if the file has a .prn extension, it will nonetheless be a Post Script file and as such, stands a good chance of printing accurately on other PS printers. Even for non PS files, a .prn file should print out properly sent to the type of printer that it was generated for. You cannot expect to use a prn file generated with an epson driver on an HP laserjet for example (except if they are both PS !)

What I think you need to do in your case is to get the printer driver of the "SOMEONE ELSE's' printer. These are usually downloadable from the net but you will need the exact model. Then install it on your machine. Use that printer driver to create a print file. Zip up the result (it will probably be big) and send it to the person with the other printer. What they need to do after unzipping, is to use a dos box to copy the file to their printer. Suppose the file is called song.prn and it is save in the Temp folder on drive C. Then from a dos box, the command needs to be :

COPY /B C:\TEMP\SONG.PRN LPT1:

This can be used also for a .PS file

4. I don't know anything about Paper port so can't comment.

Finally - the gap thingie . This is only as a consequence of zooming into the print at a high resolution.  With some screen drivers this occurs at max resolution, others at a lower resolution, others not at all. But the resultant print of the score does not have this at all. This is purely drawing mechanics on the screen.

Sorry this is lengthy but I hope of some help.

General Discussion / Re: problem with boxmarks font
If you look at the item of text that you are working with, it has a character width (and that could be the width of all of the characters if you are inserting a text word.

If Preserve width is on, then all of that space will be reserved and taken by the text in that measure and all of the staves in the piece of music, although the text will only appear in that measure.

With Preserve width off, No space is reserved by the text and you can place it above other items in the measure, it doesn't have any space reserved for it.

Easiest way of showing this is :
In the MIDDLE of a measure of notes, press the x key and then just press enter to insert the words "text expression"
If preserve width is off, the words will appear above the notes. If preserve width is on, the words will appear in between the notes. Toggle between the two to see the difference

General Discussion / Re: How does the NWC newsgroup work?
Just to add to what Fred's said - I use Forte Agent as my newsreader and it has no problems whatsoever in reading thousands and thousands of records.

I even have the backup on CDRW with all of the attachments that have been posted and can switch to that at will even though this has all the records from before the EZUSA server as well.

Hope to see you in the newsgroup Dave.

General Discussion / Re: How does the NWC newsgroup work?
Dave,

The NoteWorthy newsgroup is on a remote newsgroup server that does not host all of the alt newsgroups. This is based on a server called EZUSA but I am not sure what it is that you are downloading onto OE. The NoteWorthy newsgroup only has 49,000 records since it's been on that server and I don't think all of those would be downloadable now.

Maybe you are downloading all of the newsgroups on that server?
For the record, the address for the server is : news2.ezusa.net  and the NoteWorthy newsgroup is ntworthy.nwc

General Discussion / Download the Scriptorium Database
Folks

You can now download a CSV file  holding a database of all of the NoteWorthy files on the Scriptorium so that you can browse off-line.
The file can be reached from the main database page (Click to visit)

The CSV file contains the following information :
the Composer, the url of the file, the name of the music, the url of the info file, the Scriptorium classification, and the user that created the file.

The Database file will be updated periodically - probably about once a month, depending on the rate of submissions.

Note that the url of the music and/or  the info file can be coped and pasted into your browser. If you paste the url of a  NoteWorthy file into your browser, this will either be downloaded or played dependant upon the installation of the NoteWothy plug-in.
