General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
Well, perhaps,

But I'm sorry - I still can't get it.
If I go to fonts - and without changing anything else, I select Comic Sans MS for Lyric and I select size 10 (which is a common size (10 or 12 is quite common), then the font comes out as if it were somewhere between 20 - 30.

Are you now saying, that without changing anything else, we can no longer select standard sizes from the font dialogue box ?
To get something normal, you need to select something like 5 or 6 which isn't even in the drop down menu.

I think I need a bit more explaination. ALT z worked great  - but this seems very odd to me .

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
Excuse me for asking but ...

Version 2.01

In the Primary font setup - isn't the print size the wrong way round ?  ie - at the moment, the higher the number, the smaller the print size.

Is this correct ?

Size 4 (the minimum) is huge whilst size 30 is miniscule.
There seems to be a really strange relationship between this size and the size of the lyric font - as if the two are tied together - really wierd.

I believe this is not right.

Instrument Trees / Re: Yamaha XG Tree
Quite a few questions here - and others may be able to answer better - but I'll have a go.

Quote
Does this import sound fonts?
No - not as such, but it will set up information for sound fonts you might have loaded in your sound banks.

Quote
Can you change back and forth between trees?
Yes - but you probably wouldn't want for any particular piece of music.  But that would depend on how you have your itree set up.

Quote
How is that done if it is possible?
Go to the properties for the staff (F2) . Select the instrument tab. Click on pre defined instruments.  At the bottom right of the dialogue box you will see a "Change Instrument" box. You can change to a different Itree there . (Make sure that you save all your itrees to the location specified in "Tools Options Folders Instrument trees"

Quote
Does it change the sound of music already written?
That all depends on what you have configured in your Itree. For example, If you have selected a standard GM Trumpet - patch 56 from your Instrument list - it would sound one way. But if you always have a trumpet sound font loaded into a certain bank in your sound bank, then the itree can be set up to have all of the details for that so that you do not manually have to make all of the changes. Just by selecting the itree record for the trumpet in that soundbank - will mean that everything is set up for you. Obviously if you use this to set up your file, and then email the file to someone who does not have sound fonts - then the music will sound rather strange.

Quote
If I send a song to someone else who doesn't have the same Itree, will the renderings be different from what I hear on my machine?

See answer above - it depends on what you do with itrees. The fact that they don't have the same itree will not matter, since the tree is not saved with the music. It's whatever you have done to the music using the itrees.

If you can imagine that itrees are a library of reference cards for Noteworthy.  All of the things that you are likely to do with instruments and dynamics could be stored in this reference library. When you want to do something, you go and look for the reference sheet that tells you how to do it. you could actually read the reference sheet and then physically do it in NoteWorthy - but you don't have to since NoteWorthy will do it for you using the itree reference card.

One last example using this analygy.

You tend to set up a few orchestral pieces of music.

Each time you do that, you know that you use a trumpet in Bb.
You go to the Itree reference Library and look up Trumpet in Bb and it tells you that this is patch 56, and in order to sound properly in an orchestral piece, you will need to set the transposition to minus 2 and in order to merge in with other instruments in the orchestra, you need to set the overall volume down a bit. In addtion, because of your own sound card, when the trumpet is playing ppp (can trumpets do that ????? ) it's so quiet it can't be heard so you need to set the default sound level of ppp for the trumpet to a bit louder.

You could now go and manually do all of that. But if you select the correct instrument from the itree and you have configured it properly, it will do it for you . When you save your music, those settings are saved with your music (but the itree is not).  So if you send the music to someone else - all that is important is that the setting is there - they don't need to know anything about the itree at all. They don't even need to know that itrees exist.

Finally with respect to the Yamaha XG tree, these will be the default settings for anyone who uses the Yamaha XG synth. If you don't use that- you don't need it. But that is a specific Itree for Yamaha - many people have compound Itrees that cover a whole range of situations they might use.

Hope this helps

General Discussion / Re: I need help

Indeed, wouldn't that be nice.

NoteWorthy only supports triplets at the moment.  (At the moment sounds like I have expectations of something else at some time - just a hope !)

Any multiplet has to be fudged with a work around usually by hidden notes, staves, tempo changes etc

General Discussion / Re: NWC files to PDF and vice versa
I believe that the publisher must have either NWC or the Viewer. He will then either edit in NWC and publish to pdf, or publish to some form of DTP and then modify that and put the modified DTP into PDF.

There are only very limited edits that can be done with the Acrobat distiller.

I suggest you ask the publisher which method they are using.

General Discussion / Re: measures per printed line: aka, page set-up?
On the very top staff of your piece, go to the bar line that you want to be the last on the line.
Highlight the barline and then hold down ALT and press enter to get the properties up.

Check "Force System Break"

There will then be a forced carriage return at that point.

Repeat this process where ever you want to force the break.

1918
General Discussion / Re: Bug: Note Spacing (Beta 1 Version 2)
Rick - at work at the moment  so cannot do an example - but if you take your previous example and replace every "single bar" line with a "double bar" line (|| not a repeat bar line ) then the spacing and positioning on print preview appears to be equal for all notes with reference to the bar line irrespective of where the bar is. There would appear to be now a consistent spacing algorhythm.  (Not that you want double bar  lines rather than single bar lines - but the point I'm trying to make is that if it can work for double bar lines, then that process should be able to be applied to single bar lines).

1919
General Discussion / Re: Bug: Note Spacing (Beta 1 Version 2)
Just to add my penny worth, if you replace the bar lines with double bar lines (just as a see what happens) in Rick's example - not forgetting to add the 2 force system breaks, you get the same spacing for every bar. So the spacing of the notes following a bar line must depend on what type of barline is at the beginning of a measure.

I would have thought that the same spacing algorththm could be applied to single bar lines as double ones.

General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
Anyway, its not really a big deal. I can still open the attachments, it just takes an extra step.

Yeah - but .....    Don't like that. It should work.  Sounds like your system has got messed up a bit. If I had that problem, I would uninstall NWC 2, uninstall the viewer, make sure that NWC 1 files open properly at this point. Then re-install NWC2 and then the viewer. Make sure you have the 1.75 CD and your reg etc .

But before taking this sort of action, you may want to shoot off an enquiry to NoteWorthy Support. They may be able to fix the problem by asking you a few questions about settings on your system.

1923
General Discussion / Re: Attach is back???
Sounds like you haven't got NoteWorthy Viewer installed.

This clever bit of programming takes over opening duties. If you click on an NWC2 file it sends it to NWC2. If you click on an NWC 1 file it sends it to NWC 1.

And you never see the viewer load either !

General Discussion / Re: Scriptorium Update
Folks,

Just to let you know that the Scriptorium has been updated with Lawrie Pardy's excellent SwingDings series of Fonts.

A matching suite of fonts that contains an extended jazz/swing equivalent of Boxmarks, standard and euro enhanced text fonts, a chord construction font and replacements for the NWC and NWC2 system fonts.  There is also a PDF with instructions, a comprehensive set of character to extended ASCII tables and an NWC2 "Big Band" template.

These fonts are all in the same style and make creating jazz/swing charts with that "handwritten" flavour a breeze.

General Discussion / Re: Entering chord
Sorry Bart, it won't work.

This would be the same as having 2 half notes with a quarter note in between. No matter what direction you put the stems, it just won't do it.

Your only options are layering or splitting and tieing one of the larger duration notes.

tieing method :
d_d
d
O

1928
General Discussion / Re: Entering chord
A whole note has a stem direction even though it doesn't have a stem.

You can only achieve what you want by using layering unless you tie two half notes to make one of the whole notes.

But layering is the way to go. I just wish we could have a "floating layer" so that we could have just a single measure layer rather than the whole staff up to the point you need the layer.

Tips & Tricks / New Trick and Tips
Eric wrote in the Tips and Trick board :
Quote
You cannot post a new topic directly into this area. Topics will generally get promoted into this area from the General Discussion boards if they are nominated for this promotion by the user base.

Don't like this. Would much rather the message be moved by the administrator if it doesn't fit in tips and tricks.

In fact, after thinking about this, I've come back to modify the post.

[red]I hate this idea.[/red]

It's rather insulting that the NoteWorthy user is not thought to be intellegent enough to decide if an idea that he or she has had would be of  interest and benefit to other users and be able to post it as such directly in an area for that purpose.

I know mistakes happen and things get posted in the wrong place - but not that often.

I'll get off my soap box now.

General Discussion / Re: Partial layering
It's asking too much. Afraid it's the whole staff or nothing. You can at least just do as far as you need and then not bother about the rest.  Make sure with the layered staff that the ending bar is configured as Open (hidden).

A floating layer just for one or two measures would be good though. I has been "wished" for.

General Discussion / Re: Got problems with Audigy 4 sound card
This is from the creative knowledge base. It may give some ideas :

Static, noise, humming, or other poor sound quality

Remove all unnecessary hardware to free up resources
Disable all unused on-board devices (e.g. onboard sound, serial ports)
System Performance: Try a more moderate setting if your system is set up for maximum performance. (possible settings: "Turbo", "Optimal", "Normal", etc.)
VGA Shared Memory Size: Try increasing this if you have an onboard graphics card
AGP Aperture Size (MB): Set this to half the system's RAM or lower
Peer Concurrency: Toggle this setting
PCI 2.1 Support: PCI 2.1 must be enabled
Spread Spectrum Control: Toggle this setting
PCI Latency Timer: Try different values, starting with 32
Memory Hole: Toggle this setting
AGP Fast Writes: Enable this setting if your graphics card supports it
PNP(Plug and Play) Aware OS: Try setting this to No
Update the BIOS of your system, if none of the above steps solve the problem
Try lowering the Hardware Acceleration of the Graphics Card:
Windows 9x:
Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties - Performance - Graphics (set down 1 notch, then restart the system; if necessary, repeat procedure)

Windows XP/2000:
Right-click on your desktop, choose Properties - Settings - Advanced - Troubleshoot (set down 1 notch, then restart the system; if necessary, repeat procedure

If you are using Windows 98 SE or later, you can disconnect the analog CD Audio cable connected from your CD-ROM drive or other drives to the sound card. You can also disconnect or mute the microphone

General Discussion / Re: Does Extra Note Space mean Extra Accidental Space, too?
But I do believe that there is a slight bug in the extra note spacing in certain circumstances. I highlighted it before but for the record, here it is again.

Enter a quarter rest onto a staff, tails up.
Enter a quarter note tails down pitch B as a rest/note chord combination so that you have a "b" chorded with a rest.

Now enter another B as the next note. (Just an ordinary B, not a chord) tails down

Now, move back and highlight the B chorded with a rest. Hold Down ALT and press enter to get to the properties.

Change the extra note spacing to 3 and click OK.

The "B" in the chord now moves - but it moves directly layering the following B note making it effectively disappear.
Of course, any other following note other than a b and it would be quite apparent what had happened (but incorrect nevertheless).

1948
General Discussion / Re: i really really need help on two things
Not quite sure what the question is Leroy but here are some things that might help.

When you import a midi file, it should already have a key. in order to transpose it to another key, you should first of all, force all the accidentals to show for that staff. (From the tools menu)

You can then use the transpose option (from the tools menu) to transpose the whole staff up or down a number of semitones.

So if you are trying to get the piece of music into C major, you will then need to add or subtract the number of semitones depending on the key of the piece of music you have imported.

If you're not sure - experiment with increasing numbers (and then undo) until you reach the key of C. (At this stage, I would make sure that the "Update staff play back transposition" box is unchecked.

The Alto Sax is tuned 9 semitones down and so you may need to make further adjustments depending on what it is you are trying to achieve.

You may now need to make playback sound as if it were being played by an Alto Sax.
Here are some additional guidance notes.
http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/composer/usertips/29.htm

If this doesn't answer your question at all, then sorry - perhaps I don't understand.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Making MP3s of NoteWorthy compositions (and audio CDS if you have a burner)
Er - well actually Lawrie, you might have to.

If you have a sound font loaded into a sound bank, you may have to tell NoteWorthy where in the bank it is by going to the properties for each staff and then the instrument.

Having got there, you might need to check the "Send Bank Select" box and select either the LSB or MSB.

So for example, for a Jeux Organ font loaded into bank 42, tick bank select and set controller 0 to 42.
Your Organ patches will then be as defined by the Jeux sound font - ie instrument 40 will be one of the Ripieno stops.

Now of course - if you have your instrument tree set up to do all of this for you automatically, then you might tend to forget it needs doing.  But I doubt that an instrument tree has been set up for every conceivable sound font.
